I think Columbus Day should be celebrated. It's a day that shows the determination to get to America and led the way for bringing everybody into America. Christopher Columbus had some good goals. If I were to get rid of a holiday, it would probably be Veterans Day because most people work on that holiday and I would get my mail. Of course, the postal service is looking for excuses not to deliver mail.
Medicaid request
I am mentally disabled yet I work for a small amount of money each week. I am concerned about the Medicaid benefits that I and others like me receive. I would like to ask the Missouri Legislature and Gov. Jay Nixon to please not overlook us.
Missing vaccine
I really enjoyed Uncle Joe's column encouraging everyone to get a flu shot. The problem is there's none to be had. Even people who work in the hospital can't get an H1N1 shot despite the pandemic. It's really terrible how we knew this was coming months ago, yet there's no vaccine and everybody is getting sick. If this is how President Obama is going to run our nationalized health care, I totally give up on it.
Great show
WE went to the conservation department's nature center in Cape Girardeau and saw "Creatures of the Night." If you missed the wonderful show that the staff and volunteers put on, you missed out on something great. The program "The Lizard of Oz" taught us about the habitat of the creatures of the night.
Illinois corruption
I have just finished reading "Too Politically Sensitive" by Michale Callahan revealing corruption within the top command of the Illinois State Police. Callahan reveals the state police derailed all of his attempts to reopen and reinvestigate a 1986 double murder in Paris, Ill. Two innocent men were sent to prison on the testimony of a town drunk and a drug addict. Callahan, a detective with the state police, had evidence of the corruption. He was harassed by his superiors and told the case was "too politically sensitive" to reopen. He persisted, and after serving 17 years one man was ordered released. The other was ordered released after serving 21 years. I have lost all respect for the top command of the Illinois State Police. The corruption in Illinois is more rampant than anyone would believe.
Bureaucracy at work
IT'S amazing that people are so hypnotized by the story of the H1N1 virus. No news person has acknowledged that the government is still trying to recover some credibility after Hurricane Katrina. Hundreds of bureaucrats are doing everything in their power to justify their existence when the writing is on the wall that they are not needed and may be the focus of budget cuts in order to afford the liberal agenda of providing more socialistic programs to serve the dissatisfied populous, gaining votes for our elected leaders.
Headlights on
MISSOURI has a law requiring headlights to be on when windshield wipers are on. Today I counted more than 10 cars driving with their wipers on, but no headlights. If more people got ticketed, I bet there would be more lights on when their wipers were on.
Considerate mowers
I want to thank those who mow and trim the grounds at Capaha Park. My dog and I walk there often, and I am grateful that these guys turn their mowers off when they see us walking. It is a nice gesture. Thank you.
Proud of team
WAY to go, ND girls softball team. Congrats on your state championship. You make us proud. Keep it up.
Bus concerns
I have spoken to Cape Girardeau School District officials regarding the problems on school buses. I should be able to utilize the bus system for my children without fear of them getting beat up, spit on or cussed out. We need monitors -- not the electronic kind, but people. The bus drivers cannot be expected to drive the bus and keep an eye on all these children. I am rearranging my schedule so I can take my children to and from school. I am able to do this, but I shouldn't have to. What about other parents who have to use the bus system?
Public smoking
A smoke-free policy does not ban smoking. It bans smoking in public places where nonsmokers are exposed to the carcinogens of the secondhand smoke. Smoke tobacco all you want. Just don't do it in a restaurant or business where the rest of us are forced to inhale it.
Poor examples
PEOPLE who cite Stalin and Mao as examples of the dangers of socialism often succeed in making one important point: our educational system doesn't adequately teach history. What does the average high school graduate really know about these 20th-century despots' ideologies and how are they connected to 19th century Marxism? Draw your own conclusions, but please base them on more information than that provided by talk-radio hosts.

Re: Holidays and mail
Columbus didn't set out to discover America. He got lost looking for the East Indies and happened upon a piece of ground found a few centuries before by the Vikings. Not only that, but this "new" land was ALREADY inhabited by a people who "discovered" it many generations before the Vikings. Columbus Day is a friggin' JOKE! The Veterans of this country have sacrificed in their service to protect our freedom. I could list a LOT of "holidays" we could easily rid ourselves of LONG before Veterans Day. They EARNED the right to have the holiday....unlike that clueless dunce who never found the "new" route to his original destination.
Headlights on ....brand new cars headlights automatically turn on when their wipers are turned on ...
i vote we keep Veterans day ....
Headlights on- Do you really think a Cape Cop is going to get out of his car in the rain to give someone a ticket?
Veterans day should be kept. I feel if the state or federal workers are getting a day off with pay why not the rest of us? My old job was 6 paid holidays a year and now my new job has 8 paid holidays a year. I say get rid of MLK day, Truman day in MO, Places being shut down for Good Friday ( after all the govt. says you cant put up a manger scene on courthouse lawns), President day and I am sure there are a few others.
dixietrucker,
Ironic that you should mention Vikings in your post because today is the day that the Vikings will wish that they had gotten lost on their way to Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI!
I hear that the Packers' D is going to honor Old Number Four by burying him in the south endzone.
We will never forget you Brent Farve!

Yes.... It happened to my best friend friday.
I kinda like Halloween because it is not a national or state holiday.
As a veteran, I celebrate Armistice Day.
i totally agree they need to ticket people without there headlights on. i pulled out in front of someone in the pouring down rain because they didn't have their headlights on and their car blended with the sheets of rain coming down. i wondered as i drove on if it would have been there fault had we ended up in a wreck since they didn't have them on.
Public Smoking: "Smoke tobacco all you want. Just don't do it in a restaurant or business where the rest of us are forced to inhale it."
SIGH ... Here we go again ... all the smokers forcing the non-smokers to go to businesses where smoking is allowed.
I haven't seen anyone being dragged into a restaurant against their will yet, but evidently they have been. This practice should be stopped immediately!
Columbus Day -- You and Tony Soprano.
Holidays and Mail--
I hope you get drafted. P.S. The majority of postal workers (and other public service vocations) are veterans because they gave up their "college-age" years so that you could have yours in freedom.
Lumpy,
I really despise all of those GB fans in the stands today "boo-ing" the QB who made the franchise worth anything at all. From what I understand, he wanted to come back from retirement to GB and the big dogs didn't want him. Now, I know he's gone, but it's time to let go. I took Minnesota to win this evening, and BF is still on the field. No gravesite in the south end zone yet. It's 5:45 in the fourth and you are still down by 4. I guess sometimes 3 points never felt so good. Except, three points won't help you now.
Pardon me, Green Bay is down by 5. My bad.
Re: Headlights on
What I see here are at least 10 examples of why a common-sense measure had to be legislated. As long as we're going this far, perhaps those busted for no headlights should be required have an automatic system installed?
Re: Public smoking
A humorous (to me) sidebar for the smoke-free petitioners to include would be that anyone burning leaves must ensure that the smoke remains on his/her property, with the goal being "Just don't do it in a neighborhood where the rest of us are forced to inhale it". :-)~
Why do we have to give up paid-holidays at all??? What was the original complaint that caused this coversation?? I vote we all shut down at 2:00 for 45 minutes Monday through Thursday for a siesta, and make Friday the third day in the weekend-post-workweek. I bet we'd all complain a little less if we had more nap times!!
Rizzo,
It's just a game, not a way of life. I was just talking a little smack. I don't think that anyone but Brent Farve and TT know what really happened anyhow.
One thing I do know is that my team better find an O-line or Rodgers is going to have a very short career.
Lumpy,
Just talking smack back at ya... that's just one thing I love about the game. I like Green Bay, and I have to agree with you on Rodgers. He's a great BF replacement, with good protection he can complete a pass to just about any receiver. I hope Driver isn't injured too badly as well. However, I really am peeved at the Favre boo-ers from today. It's just ignorant to boo at game, especially a good guy like Brett. I am an unfortunate Rams fan, and will remain so until they leave STL. I hated that Kurt went to AZ, and really hated when Bruce went to SF (on his own accord), but I'm not so bad a sport that I would boo either one of them. As a matter of fact, AZ is my 2nd fav, despite the division rivalry, as long as Kurt is QBing. I get just as peeved when Rams "fans" boo the calls and the team in general.
i believe St.Louis won their first game today.
They sure did, it was a proud day in my house. And I live in Alabama, so I have to pay for the NFL sunday ticket if I want to watch the games. It's been hard, forking out the extra $80 to watch them lose week after week... But, hey, we all have our vices. ;)
i believe St.Louis won their first game today.

I was going to make a smart azzed comment, but I restrained myself at the last minute.
re: holidays and mail
christopher columbus did not discover America. he did not even land on north America. yes, the vikings landed years before columbus supposedly did. and yes they were fought and attacked by people already living here.
how about we change columbus day to native American day? and if you are at least 75% native American you get the day off with pay.
and the people who are veterans get veterans day off with pay? i have worked veterans days having done two tours in iraq.
that way, history is fixed. the right people get off for the holidays they represent, to include ALL holidays. if you are eligible, you get off that holiday with pay. as long as you are a legal resident.
if you are not a legal resident, go to the post office and register with your social security number, proof of address, employer's information and all persons living at that residence.
someone will be right with you.
Wheels,
Don't restrain! I'm curious about your comment... I want to see if I have an even smarter-azzed rebuttle... ;)

Thanks, fxpwt ... You're so funny. Always do appreciate your dry sense of humor!
Lights on in the rain and smoking in restaurants are two examples of the need to legislate common sense. If people used common sense (and common decency), neither laws would be necessary. Alas, some people just won't turn on their lights unless it helps them see better just like some people are so addicted they don't care about others.
It never fails, whenever I start to doubt the Stupidity of people in this area, I just read Speakout, and my Faith is restored! "Holidays and mail", Please don't display your stupidity by commenting in Speakout again. Having served 21 years between the MO Army National Guard and Regular Army, I 'think' that makes me a Veteran. My brother served the same amount of time in the Guard, and our father was in the Army, Army Reserves, and Army National Guard for about 15 years. Speaking for myself, my brother and father, you're an Idiot. Veterans don't get Veteran's Day off, whether they're retired or Active Duty. There's a lot of Veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan right now that aren't getting ANY Holidays off. If Colombus Day was "Celebrated" in place of Veteran's Day, the Post Office would then take THAT day off instead, or hadn't you thought of that? Probably not. If you know a Veteran, Thank them for supporting your right to make a fool of yourself for thousands of others to read. Unknowing, unthinking, uncaring, self-centered fools like you disgust me. Putz.
I am a veteran who hasn't had a Veteran's Day off in memory, maybe when I was in school before I was a veteran, but a job is a job these days even one that requires you to work six days a week. The last time I was able to go to a Veterans Day ceremony (I was videotaping it for work at the time) it seemed the only people there were veterans and their families. Lately the local schools have started holding Veterans assemblies and inviting the local vets to attend. I salute that and hope the message of Veterans Day is being passed on to the younger generation. I would like to see a law passed requiring employers to allow all veterans time off with pay on Veteran's Day to attend the local ceremony.
joekool
you mentioned give up some holidays, but that was so stupid to say give up MLK day. now why on earth would you want to do that to a man who stood for so many changes and tried to break down a color barrier so that we all maybe somehow could live together. Why would you say give that day of all days up, and you said in missouri. Are you a racist or just that stupid to even say something like that. You could say "give up columbus day...he was a joke, 'give up thanksgiving', that celebrates a take over of land from the indians...that was stealing...surely you can come up with another day besides taking away a day, one damn day, that celebrates a man who's vision was to see this become close to an america that your forefathers wrote about. you are wrong for that!,
