Keep the momentum going

As a cancer caregiver and advocate, I know that our nation's current health care system does not work well for many people with cancer.

Cancer patients are often denied coverage or find that the cost of coverage is far beyond their means. One in four cancer patients has delayed necessary care due to cost, according to a recent poll from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.

The status quo isn't working, and while there is still room for progress, the bills currently being debated by Congress represent a huge improvement for people fighting cancer. In their current form the bills will ensure that no one will be denied coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions, place an increased emphasis on prevention and eliminate annual and lifetime caps on benefits. These are enormous steps forward.

At the same time, health care reform must provide coverage that is adequate and affordable for people with cancer and other life-threatening chronic diseases. I urge U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson to pass legislation that guarantees quality, affordable insurance for all Americans.

The status quo is not an option for cancer patients and survivors who are struggling to afford the care they need. We need Congress to stop playing politics and act now, not later, to enact comprehensive health care reform.
