Emerson challenger raises about $200,000 in monthMonday, October 19, 2009Oct. 13 was an unusual day for U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's re-election team. That's the day Democratic challenger Tommy Sowers, a former U.S. Army major now teaching at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., reported he had raised more than $200,000 for his campaign in a little more than a month. That was $84,000 more than Emerson's campaign raised over the three months ending Sept. 30. And with Emerson's campaign overhead of $100,298 for the period, her $120,321 raised added little to her bank account. With 13 months to go until the 2010 election, Emerson had $186,394 on hand. Sowers, meanwhile, spent $15,163, leaving him $189,347 in the bank. A Republican challenger, farmer and rancher Bob Parker of Raymondville, Mo. has raised $2,769. No one associated with Emerson's campaign would comment, and Emerson declined a request to be interviewed about her re-election effort. With the strong fundraising report -- Sowers claimed more than 400 individual contributors and listed 213 who gave enough to have their names included in the report -- Sowers collected more money in a month than all of Emerson's last five challengers raised in total. Of Emerson's named individual contributors, 63 were from within the 28-county 8th Congressional District and 30 were from outside. For Sowers, 24 donors live within the district and 189 are from outside. Emerson's outside-the-district contributions include many from other parts of Missouri. Sowers' outside-the-district contributions were provided in part by current and former fellow Army officers, but he also called on people he's met as a result of that service. He received a $2,400 contribution from Lorne Michaels, the NBC television producer who created "Saturday Night Live," who Sowers said he met when he invited Michaels to speak to a class at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. While Emerson had more contributors within the district, Sowers' in-district givers wrote bigger checks. In total, Emerson raised $28,013 from named contributors within the district while Sowers took in $27,050. "I am very humbled by the support that has come in," Sowers said. "Unlike my opponent, I have got no choice but to work very hard at this." The Emerson campaign's refusal to talk about the finance reports doesn't diminish the immense challenge of defeating a longtime incumbent, Sowers said. "There are very few incumbents out there who are ever really scared of a challenger," he said. "One of the problems of the system is that all challengers are underdogs. Congress has one of the lowest approval ratings ever, but we re-electe them at a very high rate." Economic issues will be a central theme of the campaign, Sowers said. "People want to live and they want to work in these communities, but if the trends continue as they have under Emerson they worry that their communities, their way of life, is in jeopardy." 388-3642 Pertinent addresses: Cape Girardeau, MO Rolla, MO Raymondville, MO

No matter how hard liberal Rudy Keller cheers for this guy he doesn't have a chance. People like Jo Ann and they'll send her back to Washington. Everybody around here has a story about how she helped them in one war or another.
You need to ask yourself, why are people outside of the district wanting this man elected? What are their interests. One thing for sure, we do not need another liberal in Washington. In fact, we need a lot less and I believe that is what will happen in the elections next year. It is a must if we want to stop Obama from expanding his anti-american agenda. I say to Jo Ann...Keep plugging, we are with you!
Just when I thought Rudy Keller could not sink any lower, there he goes. Does Rudy really consider himself a journalist? My question would be how this clearly partisan man still have a job? Rudy, we all know that you are in love with any Democrat and will do anything you can to hurt a Republican.
Now, onto the article: Tommy Sowers seems to be a nice guy, the problem is that he has no experience at all. I truly admire his military service and his teaching career. However, he has no government experience at all. Jo Ann is a wonderful representative. I have met her several times and she is always so kind and willing to help people. Not to mention all the money she brings back into our district. Jo Ann has a proven track record of success, Tommy just doesn't.
semoguy,
Does anyone have any experience prior to being elected? Emerson's experience consisted of being married to a representative when he died.
Short white bald white,
Thank you so much for the question.
My point is that Sowers might be a very good public servant, or he might not be. Usually people run for a lower office before running for Congress to prove themselves. His website doesn't even give his view on a single issue.
I am actually a little bit suspicious of anyone who wants to run for office. Jo Ann will tell you that she never had a desire to run for office, it was never a goal of hers. However, circumstances put her in a position to run. I remember her saying this when she visited my town several years ago. It was refreshing to see a political leader who is down to earth, and not another ego-maniac.
"Experience" is not a requirement to run for US Congress.
Representative in Congress
(United States Const.,Art. I, § 2-2)
At least 25 yrs old. Inhabitant of State, 7 yrs.
And speaking of people outside of this district contributing money to Sowers' campaign: I remember when Bill Emerson contributed a sizable donation to TX Rep. Ron Paul's Democrat opponent.
Actually I am for NO MORE INCUMBANTS returning at all. I would never vote for a Democrat/Socialist, but the Republicans need to be returned to state they came from and told to stay home. None of them have any backbones. If JoAnn never wanted to run then let's give her her wish and put someone in there that has the desire to straighten the place up.
You people are so sensative.
What exactly makes this story "liberal"?
Hate to disillusion Semoguy 87 but not everyone in the 8th loves Jo Ann Emerson. Why attack contributions to the Sowers campaign from outside the district when Emerson is queen of special interests. Check out who donates to her war chest before casting stones, please. Her disinterest in the 8th and the office of representative shows. She may be in the top percent of Congress for earmarks but who benefits? If it's the MO 8th then why do we remain in the top 10 for poverty? If she sincerely does not wish to run, I would be grateful if she'd quietly resign and let someone with enthusiasm for the district and the office, Tom Sowers, have a shot.
Mo-ky-F Please explain President Obama's anti-American agenda to all of us! I am so,so tired of all the hate, lies and fear mongering coming from the extreme right. Get over it, he's our president and your hateful, untruthful, agenda against our president is what is anti-American!
