25 years ago: Oct. 16, 1984

It is reported that Vice President George Bush will visit Cape Girardeau on Monday and Mrs. Walter Mondale might be here Saturday; U.S. Rep. Jack Kemp of New York is also scheduled to be in Cape Girardeau Oct. 31 for a fundraising dinner on behalf of U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson.

With some reservations, the Cape Girardeau City Council last night approved a basic architectural plan for the $13 million multipurpose building; earlier in the day, the plan was approved by the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents.

50 years ago: Oct. 16, 1959

Cape Girardeau County taxpayers, from all sources of revenue, will pay $1,888,778.90 in taxes during the current tax season for the upkeep of all forms of county government, schools included, the largest amount on record.

A.E. Birk and Charles Froemsdorf, who have been farming and in the dairy business west of Cape Girardeau, will have an auction sale of all stock and equipment tomorrow; Birk has sold the farm to Arthur Job.

75 years ago: Oct. 16, 1934

The sale of the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge over the Mississippi River will take place about Dec. 1; a petition asking for disposal of the span was formally presented in behalf of the bondholders' protective committee at federal court yesterday.

Work begins on the construction of Hillcrest Golf Course, to be a public links at the Brown Owl property, three miles northwest of Cape Girardeau, with members drawn from both Jackson and Cape Girardeau; Ralph Eaton of Poplar Bluff, Mo., has been hired to build Hillcrest.

100 years ago: Oct. 16, 1909

An enthusiastic meeting of the executive committee for the President's Day celebration was held last night; the finance committee reported that enough funds have been secured to pay for the expenses that have already been contracted and that there seems little doubt that enough more money can be raised to defray other necessary expenses.

Professor John Laidlaw, superintendent of the Cape Girardeau School District, is moving into the new Hawley flats on Themis Street.
