Cape County runs out of flu shots; several clinics canceled

The Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center ran out of flu vaccines and is canceling its upcoming clinics, said Charlotte Craig, the center's executive director.

The center started giving flu shots at the Osage Centre on Sept. 18 and immunized 1,100 people during the clinic, Craig said.

"We've got that mass immunization clinic down to an art," she said. "Now if only we had the vaccine to go along with it."

Craig said the center received a partial shipment of 1,750 from its distributor E-Med. She said the distributor told her the Center for Disease Control is directing where the vaccinations are going.

"It's out of our hands," she said. "It's a mess."

Saturday's clinic at Red Star Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau is canceled along with a Sept. 30 clinic in Delta, an Oct. 5 clinic at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, an Oct. 16 drive through clinic at Fire Station No. 2 in Cape Girardeau and an Oct. 31 drive through clinic at the Jackson fire station. Walk-ins at the health department, which were to start Thursday, are also canceled.

Craig said there is a higher demand so far this year.

"I think people's awareness has been heightened because of the H1N1 virus," she said.

Craig said she expects to receive the rest of the vaccine shipment, about 2,000 doses, by early November. She said FluMist, a nasal spray vaccine, is still available. People who are under 49 and do not have asthma can use the nasal spray, she said.

Just something else the federal government screws up. Some of you people want FEDS running your healthcare? "Sorry, sir, we are out of chemo drugs; you will have to die."

Greatest country in the world.

Fools think the government can provide health service. And why do you think the government has an obligation to provide you with health care? I don't get it.

I am always amazed at the ignorance of the people on this board.

Please do a little research before posting something stupid.

If it wasn't for the federal government, there wouldn't be any vaccines.

First off, its government funded researchers who work to determine the strain. Then it's the government that subsides the shots because they are too expensive to serve the public good.

Tell me people, if it wasn't for the government "screwing up" then you would have no shots at all.

THANK you lumbrgfktr. The government is responsible for providing us with as much positive as negative. No person and nothing about this life is perfect and I don't know how or why you all expect it to be. Instead of counting blessings, you skip straight to the jugular. How about being thankful for the fact that we even have a vaccine for it at all?

why doesnt the government make people pay for the flu shot? but no,it hands it out for free. and many of these people will get it for free when they go to their 'middle class subsidized health care' clinic. aka free clinic. so the people who pay for it dont get it cause we are out working, using our blood, greasing the wheels of this government. then maybe we can get a freakin flu shot! how do people think the healthcare system is gonna be better when everybody-tee hee hee giggle giggle snort snort-is under the same plan?

Yes we would.

commonsenseapplies, in the current system it would go something like this: Sorry sir, we have plenty of chemo drugs but you don't have insurance or your insurance has just dropped you, so you will have to die.

I'm from a country with universal health coverage and it works great. The system here is inhumane, surely the United States can do better.

Why don't you go back to you country and take your socialist ideas with you.

Mr. Wiffle,

Sure hope that you don't plan on taking advantage of some of the socialist type programs that have existed in our country for decades; Social Security, Medicare, SIS etc. Make sure that none of your family members participate or benefit either...RIGHT!!!

To the posters that think you can have pritivitized flu shots.

If so, what company is going to pay to research the thousands of flu strains ever year.

Then what company is going to pay to develop the vaccine that may or may not be effective.

Then what company is going to pay to warehouse those vaccines all over the country.

And what good will it do when the majority of the general public won't pay $500 dollars for flu shots.

The reason you don't have privitized flu shots is becasue there is no profit it in. Its a greater good service which is why its provided by the government. I guess theoreticly, you could have a non-profit organization like the red cross handel it.
