Tour of Missouri

WHAT a senseless waste of money. We don't have money for education, roads, health care for the poor and so on ad nauseam. But we have money for the Tour of Missouri bicycle race. Just as much was spent for the 5,000 who were at the finish line in Cape Girardeau as if we had the turnout of 30,000 that was predicted.

Bus rules

A recent comment said school bus drivers need to make children sit down on the bus. How is a driver who's trying not to run over children, animals and other vehicles and get the bus down the road supposed to spend his or her time also making children follow the rules? It falls on the parents to get the rules across to their children.

Great race

THANK you, Cape Girardeau, for a wonderful Tour of Missouri. I saw people of all ages, young families and older people with smiles on their faces and enjoying the wonderful day in our beautiful city. Cape Girardeau is my hometown. I've been a resident of this town for 64 years. You made a memorable day for me. It was a wonderful event. I thank Peter Kinder and all the volunteers, the police, all the city workers, everybody who put such effort into this event. It was a wonderful day, and the enthusiasm was wonderful. I never thought I would ever see a professional bike race come through downtown Cape Girardeau. And with the crowd so enthusiastic.

Repeat offenders

REGARDING counseling for repeat criminal offenders: I can give you some pretty good inside information. I have two sons who are repeat offenders. They have had counseling. They've been put on medicine. If children repeat something over and over, you might as well put them in some kind of dog house, because that's where they belong.

Four-wheelers

BOLLINGER County officials are giving permits for $15 to four-wheeler operators so they can run up and down our gravel roads uninsured and unlicensed. I see a lawsuit coming.

Destroying it all

MY people have been on this continent since 1640. We came here to avoid oppressive government, not for health care. We have participated in every war this country has been involved in, from the French and Indian war through Desert Storm. Obamacare is an abomination. It is the prelude to a socialist government agenda that will ultimately destroy everything that my forefathers fought and died for. This is unacceptable.

Shine a light

THE controversy surrounding President Obama's publicity stunt of using America's students as political props was a success for a couple of reasons. First, it forced him to remove suggestions in the study guide asking that schoolchildren write letters on how they could support the president. Second, it showed Americans that when you shine a light on this president, he can be knocked off his radical course. The more Americans learn about who Obama really is and whom he has surrounded himself with, the harder it becomes for him to push his radical agenda on America.

Road warning

DRIVE with caution on County Road 458 in Oak Ridge because it is pitted with potholes and the roadside has not been mowed this year.

When in need

I started using government assistance when I lived in Vermont and had five young children to raise. I had a lazy husband who wouldn't work, so I kicked him out and tried to find a job. We went on assistance and were relieved to have it. It's not a fun thing. I used to go to the neighboring town to use food stamps. I was ashamed. But there are a lot of people in dire need, and they shouldn't be made fun of or looked down upon.

Never forget

WAY to go, Southeast Missourian. That tiny Sept. 11 article on Page 4A will make certain that we never forget the events of eight years ago. If you won't do it, then let me say thank you to all the men and women who keep my family safe here in the greatest country on Earth. God bless the United States of America.

Unpopular government

MODERN-day conservatism has been reduced to 19th century racist John C. Calhoun's assertion of the rights of states to nullify laws passed by the U.S. government. One problem with this is that, according to a recent poll, state governments are as unpopular as the federal government.

No pandering

U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson has not abandoned her conservative philosophy. An admittedly growing group of reactionaries have (with righteous indignation) abandoned conservatism, even though many of them try to cloak themselves in its mantle. In a word, these birthers, deathers, secessionists and their ilk are on the fringe, and I admire Emerson for not pandering to them.

When in need

It took 5 kids before you found out he was to lazy to work?

-- Posted by Rainy on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 5:25 AM

Bus Rules:

When we road the school bus our parents had to sign a form, That basically said if we didn't follow the bus rules we would be kicked off the bus. Any driver we ever had would tell you once maybe twice and after that your parents would be contacted and you were off the bus for 2 days to a week. The drivers also made you sit by grade level k-12 and if you where a problem then you sat up front with the little kids.

Tour of Missouri ...this caller proberly don't know how to ride a bike ...

Bus rules ...i wouldn't be a school bus driver for all of the tea in China..

Great race ...hmmm , so it is possible for folks to work together toward a common goal..

Destroying it all ...it's not all that bad , is it?

When in need ...5 kids ? he wasn't lazy in the bedroom..

Unpopular government ...let's not leave out local government !

I guess I must be on the wrong page...

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.

A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year

They claim 700,000 vehicles -- so that's 224 million gallons / year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption.

And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.

So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million.

How good a deal was that ???

They'll probably do a great job with health care though!!

-- Posted by *Rick* on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 7:41 AM

Hey Rick! One thing wrong with your analysis is the savings is spread over the life of the automobile, say 10 years. Then it becomes 10 times $350 million or $3.5 billion in savings if the price of oil stays at $75/bbl

-- Posted by Observer1 on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 8:17 AM

These days, how do you separate one senseless waste of money from all the others? When I waste money, its alright! HEH! Well, it looks good on you.

-- Posted by blogbudsman on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 8:32 AM

And Rick 'ol buddy, 'ol pal, some 'experts' are saying that the folks that traded in their old clunkers are driving the new car more - and burning more gas. Oh well, who's to say?

-- Posted by blogbudsman on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 8:34 AM

What happened to thinking for oneself?

Bing: "spending $3 billion to save $350 million"

Begets: oodles of regurgitated internet garbage :-)~

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 9:42 AM

Is the saving for one year or over the life of the vehicle?

-- Posted by one4kids on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 9:44 AM

Tour of MO...careful, your education is showing.

Great Race...yes, it was fun. And everyone involved - thank you for your efforts.

Repeat offenders...uh, maybe it has something to do with their home life? One, shame on them, but two kids? Shame on you.

Destroying it all...well said.

When in need...thanks for your honesty. I would wager your kids had a lot of love, and you all are probably doing better now.

No pandering...oh, give us a break. Joann is as deep in the muck as the rest of the gang in DC.

it was an e-mail my brother sent me...there are so many holes in the premise i'm not even going to try and justify it...

Good morning!

Tour of Missouri...this would fall into my 'have better things to do' list but to each their own. Good luck next year. ☻

Bus rules...if ya can't handle the 'job', I'd prefer you get out of the seat.

Great race...see comment above. ☻

Repeat offenders...WOW! I'm speechless.....

Four-wheelers...seriously?

Destroying it all....healthcare reform will cause all of that, huh?

Shine a light...OK, so now you are not happy b/c he listened? sheesh.

Road warning...thanks but I always drive with caution. ☻

When in need...now guys, don't give her such a hard time....they could have been triplets/twins. That's only twice. ☻

Never forget...nor will I.

No pandering....ouch. ☻

WOW, Wheels...."puke in print", huh? Nice. ☻

Tour of Missouri:

Who says "we" don't have money for educations, roads, and health care for the poor? Where did you get this information? Elementary and secondary, medicaid, and transportation get most of the state budget year in and year out. Your basic assumption for your enrire argument is flat out wrong

-- Posted by Ike on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 10:02 AM

Rick,

In your Cash For Clunkers post, you also forgot that according to the Keynesians, recessions can only be avoided / eliminated by going deeper and deeper into debt. Therefore, the program was a success, and the Fed announced that the recession is "most likely" over.

I sure the **** feel better.

-- Posted by lumpy on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 10:08 AM

lumpy, it makes you want to go out and buy a clunker.

-- Posted by James Nall on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 10:58 AM

I'd bet that 90% of these 'clunkers' weren't daily drivers to begin with. From some of the pictures I've seen, they're old beat up farm trucks and hunting vehicles. We have a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer that may get drove 4 or 5 times a month. Need it to pull trailers or take to the cabin.

So, why not take a $500 piece of crap, get $3,500 or $4,500 trade in on a new car. Then, turn around and sell you're old car, buy another $500 piece of crap, and pocket the rest?

Our government at work.

-- Posted by SpankTheTank on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 11:34 AM

Bus Rules ... After telling a bus-driver friend how I handled 'unruly children' in our car (pull over and stop until they behaved--kids hated that boring inactivity and only had to do it a couple of times), she tried it. It worked! However, she was told not to do it any more because it might make the students tardy.

Great Race ... Was this a tongue-in-cheek comment? Would the word 'wonderful' five times be a clue?

Four-Wheelers ... Heck, they should have charged $250 for those permits ... Might as well make a little extra money while they're at it ...

When in Need ... It's those who have a feeling of 'shame' for having to be on welfare who are the ones who probably deserve help the most, and are the ones who might work harder to be independent of the system. Those who have no shame, and do little or nothing to improve their circumstances, are probably the ones who least deserve it. The latter have made it even more difficult for the former to be able to 'hold their heads up.' Somehow we have, with compassion, tried to eliminate the 'shame,' and that may not have been a really good thing in the long run.

Unpopular Government ... It is obviously easier to 'fight' state government than federal government. Perhaps we should consider states' rights as more 'citizen friendly?'

That was really interesting, Rick ... Is that Clunker Math, or just Government Math?

Already have two clunkers, James ... But a little newer clunker might tempt me! Kind of wished they'd handled it differently ... let us trade in our clunkier clunkers on better clunkers maybe?

rick couldn't count money correctly when he had money he made from Lee Rowan, so i know he doesn't know how much money we saved or spent on the car program. That is why when the healthcare package passes, he will be able to get his mental health evaluations a lot cheaper than what he is paying now. It won't be much longer rick...because It is going to pass...you can bet on that!

-- Posted by *Rick* on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 12:44 PM

Rick, I think it was lumpy.

Sorry lumpy, shouldn't have jumped in.

kadillac, Sir John Maynard Keynes was an economist. In the 1970's his economics played a role in the hyperinflation then. Shortly after Nixon claimed that we are all Keynesians now, he was denounced as an economist. He has recently, with this crisis, emerged again only to be viewed as wrong again by most economists outside the monetary economists that work within the FED.

-- Posted by James Nall on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 12:59 PM

I know this has nothing to do with the topics today, but i just got home from a friend's funeral. On the way to the cemetery, you wouldn't believe how many rude people pulled out in front of us. That is so rude! Don't some of you realize that when cars are following a hearse with their flashers on, they are in a funeral procession? Have some respect!! And for those who did pull over, from the bottom of my heart, thank you!

-- Posted by did_I_say_that_out_loud? on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 1:06 PM

Keynesian:

A supporter of Keynesian economics believes it is the government's job to smooth out the bumps in business cycles. Intervention would come in the form of government spending and tax breaks in order to stimulate the economy, and government spending cuts and tax hikes in good times, in order to curb inflation.

kadillac, he was not saying your beloved god, Obama, was from Kenya. They are called Kenyans, not Keynesians. Geez!

-- Posted by SpankTheTank on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 1:10 PM

kadillac,

Buddy, you need to breath before posting. Take it from someone that has typed before rereading, it only comes back to bite you in the patooty.

As far as I know Lumpy is not a 'birther' so he was not refering to the President but a financial philosophy (sp).

-- Posted by Pups on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 1:14 PM

did_I_say_that_out_loud?,

There are some of us still out there that know the proper respect to show a funeral procession. I have faith in that most still do. With my Grandmother's cars pulled over even though they were across the road with a huge median. Meaning our procession didn't even mess with their flow of traffic, but they all stopped. It was very moving.

kadillac,

You think that "Keynes" is a country? That really is entertaining. Thanks for that portion of your enlightening post.

Besides, it is common knowledge that Republicans are just as responsible for the boondoggle that is the CARS Program as any other group of the ruling elite. Sorry, but your god-king is not directly responsible for every piece of half-baked legislation that is bringing this country to it's knees.

Go read a book and flunk a test.

James,

I already have two clunkers. Paid for and running fine. Both Toyotas - one that I have driven daily since 1994.

I recently bought my lovely wife a non-clunker new Camry that replaced our clunker Honda. The Camry is a beautiful car, gets great gas mileage, and the quality is top notch.

Regular preventive maintenance and a little TLC will allow most modern vehicles to run 200,000 miles easily.

kadillac needs to change his handle to korvair.

-- Posted by blogbudsman on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 1:55 PM

lumpy, my wife works at a Ford dealership and I have two Ford trucks, a 1994 3/4 ton and a 2001 1/2 ton.

I've been pressuring her into buying a Toyota but with no luck. My brother claims his next vehicle will be a Toyota and he drives a Ford.

-- Posted by James Nall on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 2:10 PM

blogs,

Corvairs are wonderful little cars that were ahead of their time. The Corvair Corsa Turbo could beat a Corvette off of the line, and if the coarse was curvy enough, could outhandle the Vette anyday of the week. As usual, GM caved into the state run propaganda machine, and development of the Corvair was brought to a halt in 1965. With continuing enginering, and some gonads, the Corvair could have been on par with some of Porsche's rear engined, air cooled supercars.

I also love Cadillacs. Since our hero is determined to abuse a once great American iconic badge, perhaps he could change his name to kadillac-kimarron.

James,

I can't knock Fords. I just put a '96 Mercury Sable up for sale that has close to 200,000 miles on it, has survived my wife AND my teenage daughter, and still runs strong.

Unfortunately, Ford has just purchased the rights to use Toyota's original hybrid techknowlogy from 1998.

"Buy a new Ford hybrid and it's as good as a 12 year old Prius" doesn't sound like much of a sales pitch to me.

I think that they dropped the ball on the new Taurus also.

Speaking of Taurus; I am looking to buy a Taurus 44TEN for the house. Have any of you handgun aficionados ever shot one? I am considering the stainless steel model with the 3" barrel.

-- Posted by lumpy on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 2:28 PM

blogs,

Hey, no sweat! The Corvair is a misunderstood automobile. The Corvair has a massive, faithful following, and the car's fans have worked all the kinks out of them. Most of the Corvairs that are still being driven don't leak a quart of oil everytime you park them and the heaters work without suffering from CO poisoning.

I've driven a couple of 'Vairs, and they are nimble little cars. I love the styling also! Very unique, especially for late 50's / early 60's American auto standards. No fins, clean simple and functional. Handled great in the snow. They almost knocked VW off of their perch, and the product line was vastly superior. It included a hardtop, a convertible, a fordor, a truck, a van, and a wagon.

The Corvair story is a tragedy. I like to think that if GM would've ran with the platform, I wouldn't be driving a Toyota to work.

-- Posted by lumpy on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 2:38 PM

Boy, having to work my life away sure hampers my leisure time to enjoy mixing it up with the intellectually superior enlightened ones like kadillac... Hat's off to Rick, Lumpy, Blogs and the rest for handling another deluded blind follower with one hand tied behind your backs.

I was glad to see someone else feels the same way as I did about the Bike Tour. I am a Mo State Employee and probably will be losing my job due to the Gov's Budget cuts from the Social Service Budget. He did NOT cut the bike tour, but cut money that helps people. I have worked for 10 years in a Social Service job, working nights, traveling, and weekends without overtime pay. I am a single mother, and will lose my job but pay for a very expensive BIKE TOUR that nobody won!!!!It just doesn't make sense.

-- Posted by dadsgirl on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 3:15 PM

lumpy,

Never shot the Taurus 44, but do own a Taurus 357 stainless steel, 6" barrel. Love it. Pretty accurate at 25 yards. Fits the hand well. Have never had a problem with it. As for 44, have a Smith & Wesson Model 29 (Dirty Harry) manufactured in early 70's. My favorite handgun. Great stopping power, but quite a kick. (I think Clint was using some light loads)

Still think a 12 gauge shotgun best for home defense. Hard to miss, just point and shoot.

-- Posted by DTower on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 3:16 PM

Wow! money for the bikes, but how about the homeless shelter? was that ever resolved? seems like Cape certainly has their priorties out of place!

-- Posted by sosassy on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 3:29 PM

DTower,

I also have an early 70's Model 29 when you still got the walnut presentation box and cleaning tools. I hated to wear it out so I got a Stainless 629 Classic. In one of the Eastwood movies, it mentioned him shooting .44 Specials instead of the full house .44 Mag which is a bear at least for me in this configuration.

I have never shot the Taurus, but they make a good solid, reasonably priced handgun. Some really like The Judge.

Agreed, if you can handle the recoil a good tactical 12 gage is hard to beat for home defense. I am too old to handle the beating and depend on a Glock .40 with Tac Lite.

-- Posted by D'oh on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 3:38 PM

dadsgirl,

Our government, state and federal, have lost sight of important things. It's all about pet projects now. Unless a house cleaning is done, it will never get better. This whole bike race was Kinder's boondoggle. Remember that in 2012. I just hope another conservative runs against him, and we can pull a Holden on him, and he won't even be in the race.

-- Posted by SpankTheTank on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 3:50 PM

DTower & BN1401

I own a Taurus 357 Magnum with the 2" barrel. It's a very nice gun and as accurate as any high caliber snub nose I've ever shot. At 25 yards I can put all five rounds in a target, but not the bullseye, printed on standard size printer paper. That's about as good as you can expect from this type of gun. It does have a heck of a recoil and is so loud if you did miss someone it would still give them a heart attack! It was about $150 less than a similar S & W but that's not why I bought it. I just liked the way it fit my hand better than the Smith.

-- Posted by Data48 on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 4:24 PM

BTW DTower,

I think you've kinda forgotten that Dirty harry was a fictional character in a movie. He wasn't shooting any kind of load either light or heavy. He was shooting blanks and the recoil motion was just Clint Eastwood acting.

-- Posted by Data48 on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 4:28 PM

Data48,

We could not carry a Taurus, so my revolvers were S&W and the .357 in a 2" or 2 1/2 is a bear, so I shot the .38 Special +P. I have seen some very impressive groups out of a 2", but not by me. I changed the grips on my S&W's with the exception of one which came with aftermarket type already on it.

Before making the Dirty Harry movies, Clint Eastwood actually went to the range with a .44 and full house loads, so he could approximate the recoil of the .44 Magnum, so his portrayal is more lifelike than those actors who fire those magical guns with no recoil.

-- Posted by D'oh on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 4:51 PM

Yeah, at least Clint tried to act like a gun had some recoil. I just love those "ganstas" in the movies shooting their "9's" held sideways. In real life that would break your freakin' wrist!

-- Posted by Data48 on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 6:33 PM

i like the old Eastwood movies where he's always smoking a blunt...

-- Posted by *Rick* on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 7:09 PM

The Taurus 44TEN is "The Judge". I think that it would make an ideal home defense gun.

-- Posted by lumpy on Wed, Sep 16, 2009, at 8:32 PM

Lumpy,

I have a Judge with the 3 inch cylinder and if you are shooting 410 shotgun shells in it... it is kind of hard to miss anything that is in front of you. You need the 45's for selective shooting.

I like it for the purpose you mention. Would hate to try carrying it concealed. And it is nice to have while walking around in the woods in case you are accosted by a snake.
