He was born in St. Louis on Oct. 30, 1947, son of the late Cletus J. and Ruby (Scheppers) Schumer.
Survivors include two sons, Michael and Kristina Schumer II of Cape Girardeau and Jason and Marsha Schumer of Perryville; five sisters and four brothers, Kathie and Greg Wheeler, Thomas and Linda Schumer, Rose Biri, Ronald and Linda Schumer, Bonnie and Randy Clements, Barney and Carol Schumer, Eileen and Randy Mueller, all of Perryville, and Ralph Schumer of Cape Girardeau; five grandchildren, Zoe, Adi, Jessie and Jacob Dean, and Paul Werner.
Mr. Schumer was the past owner and operator of Mike Schumer Construction Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the National Guard, American Legion Post 133, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4282, AMVETS Post 94, Knights of Columbus Council 1263, Elks Lodge 2701 and did volunteer computer work for the Perry County Memorial Hospital maintenance department.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Cynthia.
Memorials to the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau or Perry County Memorial Hospital are preferred.
Mr. Schumer will lie in repose at Young and Sons Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today with a parish wake at 7 p.m., and from 6:30 to 9:20 a.m. Wednesday. The Rosary will be recited at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. He will then be taken to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Highland for Mass at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Joe Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military graveside services provided by the Missouri Delta Team.
