Retired Sikeston teacher receives award

Mary Ann Maevers of Sikeston, Mo., was named the 2009 Distinguished Retiree by the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and Public School Personnel (MRTA). Maevers, who taught for more than 30 years in the Sikeston School District, will be honored with a luncheon at MRTA's annual meeting in September. Maevers retired from teaching in 1989. She is a member of the MRTA Southeast Area Unit of Region 12 and has been a member for more than 20 years. She has served on the state level on the board of directors, on the Community Service Committee and led fundraising efforts. She has served as Region 12 vice president and as president, vice president and officer for the SEMO Area Unit. She volunteers at the Sikeston Depot Museum, provides transportation to a blind couple and volunteers for the Missouri State Historical Society and the historical societies for Scott and Bollinger counties. She is also active with the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
