Former maintenance worker charged with Cape Girardeau Public Library theftsSaturday, July 11, 2009
Corey Overbey, 22, of Scott City was arrested Thursday, said Cpl. Adam Glueck, spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Police Department. On Friday, Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle's office charged Overbey with one count of second-degree burglary and two counts of stealing. Bond was set at $5,000. The library has been a victim of break-ins over the past month, with the most recent Monday evening. About $2,700 in cash collected for library fines and food such as chicken salad and string cheese belonging to employees were stolen. Glueck said surveillance video taken inside the library was helpful in identifying the suspect. Swingle said no other employees are suspected of any wrongdoing. "You can rest assured that the nice person waiting on you behind the counter inside the library is not connected to the case," Swingle said. Since the burglaries the library has purchased a safe to prevent future thefts. Library director Betty Martin was out of town and could not be reached for comment. "It is wonderful to hear that the police and library staff were able to use the new library's security measures to quickly identify and arrest a suspect," said library board member Eric Bohl. "We have seen a huge increase in circulation with the opening of the new building, so fine collections have been increasing also. "In the wake of these events, the board has been working with police to strengthen security measures even further than the original design," Bohl said. "I am confident that those increased security measures and this arrest will put the public's mind at ease regarding the safeguarding of its funds."

Glad to hear the case is solved, but still believe that the library has some issues with keeping cash around!
So it was "sort of" an inside job then.
where was the director of the library when all of this was going on???? makes you wonder if the director is up to the task at hand. maybe she was serving coffee and just didn't notice the "fine" money missing. i wouldn't want the director, directing any of my business.
ha!!!! he worked for me.......good thing i got fired before he did!!!
"Glueck said that surveillance video taken inside the library was helpful in identifying the suspect."
what? i thought they were going to dust the tupperware bowl that had the eaten chicken salad for fingerprints.
My God,
"About $2,700 in cash collected for library fines and food belonging to employees have been stolen within the past month".
Am I missing something here? If thats the freakin case then WHY was the video surveillance camera tapes not checked when they first noticed the cash and "food goodies" were missing? There has to be a reason however, I can't think of any other than the money was being moved around and off camera. Why, after the first theft did they not take the cash out of the building and deposit it Or at the least locked it in an office drawer that the perp had NO key for!..poor management is my conclusion and this kid is in some serious trouble!!
Well big suprise...
Wow!! Look at all the information on this guy! Photo, address, employer, etc. When someone of a different ethnic background is the suspect/criminal we hardly get a fitting description that would allow people to identify them. Only after complaints on these boards do the editors MAYBE add a photo. Thank God the "Chicken Salad Bandit" was caught. I will sleep much more easily tonight...and so will my mayonnaise!
Also, if he was packin heat at the time of the crimes, would that make this aggravated sandwich theivery? Stiffer penalty for crimes involving firearms and condiments, maybe? The money isn't the issue of course.
Oops, just realised that's the library's address. And it was his FORMER employer. I gotta take it easy at the 3 Martini and Ham Salad lunches before I post these rants.
We still got more info than most.
Cheers!
MrSnooty,
Your comments are noted, but, actually, there's nothing more (or less) here than we've run countless times before -- no matter the ethnic background of the alleged perpetrator. The 3 martinis must really have thrown you for a loop.
Cheers,

Smart guy, intelligent, pillar of the community.
A beacon of hope in these troubled times.
Someone who comes in early and stays late.
A person you would feel comfortable giving a key to your home to watch while you are gone for a week.
Dang Gman! Not only did you beat me, you took my line too. Shucks.
"Smart guy, intelligent, pillar of the community."
I was slow on the draw :o(
Thanks for filling in the gap though, we can't go around slacking off on these fine and upstanding folks. They need our support.
Mega,
No problem, just took a few more liberties to your hallmark "smart guy, ..........
We as a community need to understand this young mans side of things and why he did what he did. There are several who post here, "Ye what out sin cast the first stone". Well I for one will not to be the first one to cast any stones and this guy who is innocent until proven guilty in my eyes.
How do we know someone looking like him did not set him up? I will wait patiently to hear more about this terrible misunderstanding.
In my rush to defend this young man, I mistyped "Ye what out sin cast the first stone".
Should be "ye without sin cast the first stone".
I appreciate everyone's understanding for not judging me for my typing skills. Peace :)
Are there still some serious internal (loss prevention) controls at the new library?
When did the suspect become a "former" employee? Did he ever have a key to the new building? If so, was the key/lock changed when he was dismissed? If not, how did he get into the building during the multiple crimes?
When was the last audit of the library's accounting procedures? What firm approved it? Are there "supposed" to be daily/nightly revenue deposits? If so, who made the executive decision to "stash" the cash in a desk drawer on a regular basis?
From an accounting/auditing point-of-view, I have a difficult time believing the dollar amounts stolen ($2700 by roughly 3 crimes = $900 each on average) were JUST one day's cash fine collection?
Yes, a (floor) safe is an improvement over a desk drawer. However, given the library's hours, why aren't they using a nightly deposit drop off bag (and am pick-up), other than the inconvenience of the employee who is assigned the task?
gman, he did do it and he had absolutely no reason for it. just that he could. he's not homeless, poor or mistreated in any way.

You must be either new to the forum or have not read other posts concerning people that have been charged with crimes. You obviously did not catch on to my sarcasm. :)
Let me explain. When someone is charged with a crime (robbery, murder, etc) and anyone posts anything negative about the person, it never fails someone always have to bring out the "cast the first stone" or "we should not judge this person". I for one will not be the first to judge or casts stones for I will be the one beat over the head with the former quotes in this forum.
Therefore the ""Smart guy, intelligent, pillar of the community." shall be posted in the tone of sarcasm for all to see on any crime perps hence forward.
I hope this clarifies my position and others who choose to see the glass half full instead of half empty.
See Gman. It's a lose-lose situation. LOL! Oh the pains of making a statement, Good or Bad.
Since this case is now busted will someone please do something about the prostitutes on South Lorimier! They try to get into my car while I'm at stop signs. I know there are few of political or financial stature down by the river but, trust me, this will spread to your safe, picket fence suburbs soon if it isn't corrected. I wouldn't mind it all that much, but to be honest, most of them are toothless and scare my children.
gman, he did it. it is a fact. there's no defending him. he doesn't need anyone to feel sorry for him. we have, it didn't help.
corey is the son of the man who owns the cleaning company whom the library contracted to do all the cleaning up from the construction of new building. he had been scoping out the building before it even had it's grand opening. tells you how much background is ran on people. he had a record and even just got out of jail last fall.
