Attitude tops college degree

Regarding the "Trying to succeed" Speak Out comment: The reason why athletes with lower GPAs receive scholarships is because Southeast Missouri State University is an NCAA Division I school and is required to give a minimum number of scholarships to athletes. Not all of the athletes have scholarships. Some are walk-on athletes who are not recruited by the school and have to try out for the team.

One should go to college to get an education that complements a skill. If an individual does not have a skill, then one must learn a skill. To get a degree for the sake of having a degree is a waste of time and money. It is your attitude in life that will allow you to succeed in life, not a piece of paper that says that you have a degree.

Many individuals who have degrees lack common sense. The ability to think analytically will help you overcome obstacles in life. Life is a path filled with constant struggles.

Remember that it is more important to have strong, healthy relationships with individuals than having a degree that says that you passed the minimum requirements. A degree does not guarantee a career.

Life is not fair. It was not fair when one of my daughters was diagnosed with leukemia (now in remission). Fairness is a fantasy.
