Police arrest six on ID theft, forgery charges at Flickerwood

Thursday, July 9, 2009

In the wake of a handful of arrests at a Cape Girardeau restaurant for identity theft and forgery allegedly committed by illegal immigrants, six men were arrested at Flickerwood Farms in Jackson this week on similar charges.

According to a probable-cause statement, Cape Girardeau County sheriff's deputies went to Flickerwood to serve several warrants on illegal immigrants working at the farm, and a search identified several other people thought to be working on forged documents.

The owner of Flickerwood Farms, Mark Boardman, provided deputies with the work papers and Social Security numbers his employees had supplied upon their hiring.

Flickerwood Farms and Arena is a major vendor of cattle, feed and wood shavings and hosts a number of local rodeos.

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement confirmed none of the men had any records that could prove legal entry into the U.S., indicating the permanent resident and Social Security cards were forged, the statement said.

Fransisco Soso Cruz, Manual Munoz-Alvarenga, Anselmo Cruz-Candelaria, Hector Gonzalez-Hernandez, Candido Sorto and Adalberto Baraona were all charged with identity theft and forgery.

On June 26, the Cape Girardeau Police Department arrested eight people as the result of a raid at Casa Mexicana, 1832 N. Kingshighway, on suspicion of using false Social Security numbers to work at the restaurant.

In addition, another man was arrested in Cape Girardeau and charged with forgery, though he was originally stopped for a traffic violation.

Efrain Silvia-Cruz, 18, 2832 Whitener St. Apt. 8, was arrested July 3 after being stopped for having car windows that were tinted darker than is permitted, according to a probable-cause statement.

Though Cape Girardeau police will investigate illegal immigrant reports, the majority of immigration arrests and detainers begin as an investigation into another type of complaint, police have said. A detainer occurs when someone is arrested on state charges, and local authorities agree to hold or detain that person for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to be turned over to them after their sentence is complete.

Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's detective Jamie Malugen said immigration-related arrests tend to fluctuate between periods where there are none followed by several all at once.

Malugen said the sheriff's department received a tip about Flickerwood that led to the investigation, but added that the arrests in Cape Girardeau may have helped in persuading the tipster to come forward by provoking awareness of the issue.

I find it hard to believe that these employers do not know these employees are illegal. Don't you have to complete tax forms? Wouldn't it come back as a bogus number?

Turnip. The Social Security Administration and the the IRS are both federal government bodies.

The federal government has proved time and time again that they do not care about illegals working in this country. I am 3 hours from the border. The border is still wide open.

More than likely these illegals will be turned over to the INS and then they will be turned loose again. It happens every day. You'll probably see these same guys picking peaches this summer.

-- Posted by InfoWarrior on Wed, Jul 8, 2009, at 10:35 PM

Federal Government will not do anything about illegals. ICE is very laxed with them and I understand it is hard to get ICE to come down here and get the illegals when our police call them.

-- Posted by swampeastmissouri on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 5:37 AM

If ICE goes to the trouble to incarcerate them, they will be deported. Ask around in the Mexican community how many of their friends took the one way trip South. They are keeping their heads down now.

At least they are willing to work! We have a lot of American citizens who refuse to do the work that the illegals are happy to do. I AM NOT referring to individuals who are legitimately unemployed and trying diligently to find work. I am referring to those individuals who are happy to sit back and collect their check for doing nothing.

Thanks to whoever is responsible for finally doing something. Your work to weed out these criminals is appreciated.

-- Posted by stevmo on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 7:29 AM

DON'T STOP NOW! There are many, many more in Cape, Jackson, and out in the county that need to go too. The employer's and landlords should be held responsible for taking advantage of these people also!!!! These illegals must have a job and a place to stay when they come to this country, and the business owners and "slum-lords" take advantage of the illegals by allowing them to work (AT A REDUCED WAGE-WITH NO BENIFITS OF COURSE)and allowing them to live in their over priced rental properties!! Until some of these folks are identified and arrested, the problem will continue.

-- Posted by arrestthem on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 8:30 AM

Chocolatte,

Perhaps one of the reasons "American citizens" do not want to do the work is because of these employers greed. These illegals come from a Country where 5 dollars and hour jobs are hard to find. There standard of living is far below ours so the sub minimum wages they are paid here looks great to them.

I have no problem with folks from Mexico or any other Country coming to The Unites States to work.

I do have a problem when they do not abide by our laws that govern immigration. Something needs to be done with these employers who know they are hiring people who are not legal citizens or do not have a green card and work visa.

Here's an ideal why don't we count the number of mexicans in this country illigal who are working for a living and count the same amount of americans who are sitting on their you know what too lazy to work and drawing a big check for nothing and drop them off in mexico and call it a fair trade.

-- Posted by newman90 on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 8:54 AM

newman90 said," Here's an ideal why don't we count the number of mexicans in this country illigal who are working for a living".

Here is a better idea, why don't we count the mexicans in this Country who are working for a living illegally and round them all up and have their greedy employers

pay their one way trip back to Mexico!!!

-- Posted by GREYWOLF on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 9:28 AM

Illegals? Surely not here in the heartland. How can this be? I think it is time for our local law enforcement to look out west (Maricopa county,Az.) for some encoragement and start enforcing all laws state and fed.

To wait for a illegal to commit another crime before local law enforcement get's involved is just wrong. How many laws would I have to violate before the locals came after me.

-- Posted by Airborne 95B on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 9:33 AM

Local law enforcement officals have no authority to arrest simply on immigration status. They have to ask up the ladder.

-- Posted by Yankeestation on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 10:28 AM

Thank Flickerwood. LOL

-- Posted by Megalomania on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 10:28 AM

The Flickerwood folks are lying.....all they had to do was check the names and social security numbers through E-Verify, which is part of the Homeland Security Department, and the ID's would have come back as bogus.

I am so sick and tired of people saying that Amerians won't do those jobs. BULL!!!!!

Those arrested at the Mexican restaurant for stealing identities- you say Americans won't do those waitress jobs. Ok- then why does Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Mollies, etc., have American waitresses working? As far as this most recent one at a farm- oh my gosh, Jackson & Oak Ridge are full of American cowboys who would gladly have those jobs!

You people need to wake up and smell the roses. the fact is these illegal immigrants are taking American jobs. Fact is they are stealing our identities and making life he[[ for those whose identitiy was stolen. No matter how sorry you feel sorry for the ILLEGAL immigrants, you can not justify their stealing our identities!

frazzled

I believe the American's that chocolatte was referring to were those that draw welfare checks and food stamps and have 6 kids on medicaid...all while paying for their cell phones, cigarettes, alcohol and satellite on our dollar. They are the ones that are drawing a check for doing nothing while they are completely capable of earning a living like the rest of us.

-- Posted by onlymyopinion on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 12:53 PM

As long as welfare freely hands out the checks, there will always be someone there to take them.

As long as employers like Flickerwood continue to knowingly hire illegals, they will continue to cross the border.

Do something about these employers! Don't buy from them...don't eat at their restaurants...send them a message.

Once the reason the illegals come here is dried up, they won't come anymore. Simple.

-- Posted by Bickiestew on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 1:13 PM

frazzled - from my previous post, I quote "I AM NOT referring to individuals who are legitimately unemployed and trying diligently to find work."

-- Posted by chocolatte on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 2:46 PM

chocolate- I wasn't referring to you. read all of the other stories and comments posted regarding this issue over the past few weeks and you will see an overwhelming number of sympathizers that think illegals are the ONLY people who will do this work, which is BULL.

-- Posted by BadMomma on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 4:03 PM

frazzled - I respect your opinion, and thank you for clarifying. However, there are far too many people out there who see "that kind of work" as beneath them - McDonald's, shoveling manure, etc. - instead of seeing it as a stepping stone to something better. I am not for making it ok for illegals to hold jobs. I was just voicing my frustration at those who just REFUSE to work, even though they are able-bodied.

-- Posted by chocolatte on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 4:45 PM

I agree with you on that issue chocolate. My frustration lies in the fact that these illegal immigrants are stealing USA citizen's identity and causing these USA citizens hell and no one seems to care about this, no government agency is doing enought to stop this.

I have seen clients who have gotten IRS letters saying their tax return was wrong because more income was reported to the IRS than the taxpayer showed...why because some illegal stole that person't SS# and their wages were reported and my clients had to prove to the IRS within 30 days that they did not earn that money.... oh what fun.

I personally had my credit score drop 150 points in one month because someone who was ticked at me was trying to open credit card accounts in their name but using my info & address. I have tried every federal agency, even the post office for mail fraud, to try to get this person to stop. 5 years later and this person hasn't been in a lick of trouble and I have to monitor and correct my credit reports CONSTANTLY.

My frustration lies in all the people out there who think these ILLEGALS work hard and feel sorry for them, and don't think twice about the USA citizens they are hurting.

-- Posted by BadMomma on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 7:45 PM

"Local law enforcement officals have no authority to arrest simply on immigration status. They have to ask up the ladder."

Law enforcement can make arrest for illegal entry into the US. It is a Federal crime.

The problem is Missouri has no law against entering this country illeaglly, therefore no state charges are ever filed. The state politicians will not pass immigration laws because they do not want to loose the hispanic vote.

INS aka ICE usually states that unless the illegal person has crimminal charges to turn them loose because they do not have the manpower to file federal.

It is a vicious circle, we arrest them for violation of Federal law and the Feds say turn em loose. It's joke.

-- Posted by johnlaw484c on Thu, Jul 9, 2009, at 10:51 PM

As long as their is no serious punishment for the employers the Cape Girardeau sheriffs department is just wasting their time arresting illegal immigrants. Even if the ICE takes over and deports them all this does under our current system is create six new employment opportunities for new illegal immigrants.

Many restaurants & agricultural companies hire third party companies to provide workers. Those companies will fill in the gaps with a new group of primarily illegal employees within a couple days. So worst case the employer will be understaffed for a week until the new batch comes in.

-- Posted by Nil on Fri, Jul 10, 2009, at 11:30 AM

first of all illegals are people to. gettin these murderers druge dealers and child molesters off the streets should be first priority. most dem criminals arent even hispanic there american.

unless they have broken the law which 90% havent then the police need to leave them alone. im for the mexicans and against racist cops

-- Posted by DARIN GOTTI on Sat, Jul 11, 2009, at 1:03 PM

instead of waitin arround for illegalls to appear why dont they get these drug dealers off the streets

-- Posted by DARIN GOTTI on Sat, Jul 11, 2009, at 1:06 PM

i get so sick of hearing this immigrant stuff. they are lettin harden criminals back on the streets and lockin up latinos who really havent committed any crimes other then workin with fake papers.

well how many americans havent done anything illegal to make income like these drug dealers give me a break

-- Posted by DARIN GOTTI on Sat, Jul 11, 2009, at 11:05 PM

since police is so involved in the capture of illegal immigrants why dont they do the same bout the drug trafficers in cape.

tell me why u see people driving brand new mercedez and escelade trucks with $5000 rims on it and dont even have a job. isnt that probable cause to stopp them

like i said its racism
