CASA Run Turnout High for Hottest Day of the Year

It may have been the hottest day of the year yet, but that didn't stop devoted local runners/walkers and supporters of foster children from attending CASA's Third Annual 5&10K run/walk. A total of 79 runners/walkers participated in the event, helping to raise over $1900 to help train court appointed volunteers to advocate on behalf of over 200 children in the foster care system in Bollinger, Cape, and Perry counties.

"We hold this run not only to raise money, but to raise awareness of the issue of child abuse and neglect in our region," Executive Director Revonda Kirby announced to the participants before starting the run, "In the U.S., 852 children enter the foster care system every day. With your support we are able to help them find permanent safe homes."CASA of Southeast Missouri was able to serve 96 of the children that were in foster care in the area last year. More volunteers are always needed.

"CASA has one of only a few 10K runs in the Cape Girardeau area every year," says Kirby. The 10K run had a total of 22 participants, while the 5K had a total of 35. There were 22 walkers as well. Ages of participants ranged from 6 to 65.
