Out of the past 7/7/09Tuesday, July 7, 200925 years ago: July 7, 1984 The American Wind Symphony concludes its four-day stay in Cape Girardeau with two performances, one in the morning at First Baptist Church and another in the afternoon at Old St. Vincent's Church; there is also a poetry symposia aboard the symphony's floating arts center, Point Counterpoint II, at 1:30 p.m. First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Southeast Missouri has purchased the Perryville, Mo., branch office business and real estate of Colonial Federal Savings and Loan. 50 years ago: July 7, 1959 Cape Girardeau schools have been allotted $4,608 -- a sum they must match if they are to receive it -- under the National Defense Education Act to strengthen instruction in mathematics, science and modern language at all grade levels. PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Voters in a special election turn down another proposal to reorganize the public schools of Perry County; three times before, a reorganization plan has been voted down; the plan was to form all districts of the county into a central school unit. 75 years ago: July 7, 1934 Thirty-six youths from Cape Girardeau County go to Sam A. Logan of Fredericktown, Mo., is a late addition to the list of Normal School students; although he is still a student, in order to fully enjoy the pleasures of a home life he has bought a cottage on South Frederick Street, where his wife will reside. Company K of the Sixth Regiment met last night and held an election for second lieutenant to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lee Bowman; Allen Oliver, son of Sen. R.B.
