This July 4 weekend capped off a strong season for fireworks sales, though police reported fewer violations than they normally see over the holiday.

"It was great, one of our best years ever in one location," said Mary Ann Hoffman, co-owner of Hoffman Family Fireworks.

Hoffman said what seemed to sell best this year were fireworks priced between the relatively cheap and higher end varieties.

Sales came up from last year at several locations, she said.

Several Hoffmans managers reported noticing a lot more customers armed with notepads and calculators, doing "comparison shopping," trying to get the best value for their money during a tough economic year, Hoffman said.

Hoffmans has six area locations -- three in Cape Girardeau County, one in Scott County and vendors in Greenville and Advance, Mo.

Anticipating that consumers might be shopping more conservatively this year, the Hoffmans made sure to stock plenty of items under $10, but reported that the more costly 500 gram aerial fireworks sold well, too.

Hoffman said she thinks multiple families may be getting together and pooling money for the near-professional quality fireworks.

"I think the Fourth is very tied in with kids," Hoffman said. "It's such a kid holiday -- whether it's the kid still in you or you have children or grandchildren."

Hoffman said she thinks people are willing to splurge on fireworks over the July 4 holiday despite tighter budgets because of the tradition and patriotism inspired by the holiday.

"I think people just want a reason to celebrate," Hoffman said.

Scattered storms during the day Saturday may have kept fireworks violation down to a handful, less than in previous years, according to the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

On Saturday, three fireworks violations were reported in Cape Girardeau and 21 in Jackson.

what defines a violation?

I'm with you. Seems everyone does what they want, when ever they want. I just wear earplugs and bear it. My area sounded like "Shock and Awe" but I'm sure the police had better things to do than listen to me complain about noise.

Whingers,

Leave it alone, it's only 1 or 2 weeks a year!

With the economy in the crapper & unemployment at a 25 year high, they still had money for fireworks. Interesting.

How many total vendors were there? At first glance, only see one source given.

It is conceivable that overall sales could be down, yet sales at the given vendor were up due to possible reduced competition.

I have worked for a direct importer, not Hoffman's, for 26 seasons now. Our season was down. We had no more competition than in years past but noticed several of our repeat "big customers" weren't digging as deep into the pockets this year. We were down 11.2 percent in the gross sales for the season as compared to 2008.

I have no problem with fireworks being legal.

I am even prepared each year to put up with the noise and dogs barking because of it. However, what jerks my chain is the disrespect of many who choose to fire them off. What I mean is that too many people here in cape don't understand that the mess left behind needs to be cleaned up!!!!

I challenge anyone here to drive around the City and see for themselves the messes still on the streets.I would like an ordinance that would make it a violation to shoot fireworks from city streets. Hope thats not too upsetting to those of you who waste your money on an expensive thrill.

Clean up your messes!!!

Make sure the kids are safe, clean up your mess and fire at will
