Report, prosecute child abusers

The atrocities involving child abuse and neglect continue to wreak havoc in our society. This silent epidemic destroys countless lives while posing a substantial threat to future generations as the cycle of violence perpetuates itself.

It is crucial to realize that abuse/neglect of a child is a serious crime and should be treated as such. In Missouri, one count of child abuse carries a prison term of five to 15 years if the victim is subjected to serious emotional injury.

We all share the responsibility to help bring abusers to justice by reporting them to the Division of Family Services, law enforcement or prosecutors. Prosecutors can and should go after all offenders, and they can file charges for up to three years after an incident occurs.

It has been said that all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. I say that all good men and women who become aware of an abuser need to speak out and seek justice for the victims. Innocent children deserve a life free of violence. By exposing these crimes, we can all make a difference.
