Dean, Gingrich to debate health care at the Show Me Center in OctoberTuesday, June 23, 2009
Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will discuss the topic Oct. 28 at the Show Me Center, said Dex Tuttle, assistant director of campus life. "It's a hot topic," he said. "It's something that the students are obviously interested in." The event, which will cost $85,450, is funded by the Southeast student activity fee. Gingrich will receive $58,450 and Dean will be paid $27,000 for the debate, Tuttle said. The expenses include travel costs. Dean, also the former governor of Vermont, and Gingrich will express their points of view on health care for about 20 minutes each before taking questions from the audience, Tuttle said. Each year the university uses the student activity fee to bring in speakers such as journalist Soledad O'Brien and political strategist James Carville. In October, political writer Arianna Huffington and news commentator Tucker Carlson spoke about the presidential election. The upcoming October debate is on a bigger scale than past speaking engagements, Tuttle said. "This is one of the most expensive events we've considered and planned," he said. Tuttle said he surveyed student leaders from organizations across campus to gauge student interest on uses for the money. He said graduate business students wanted Gingrich to speak about health care. Other students thought Dean would balance out the debate, he said. "They definitely have political ties, and they're strong spokesmen for their respective parties," he said. The agreement was finalized last week and the university has not decided whether to issue tickets for the event, Tuttle said. Past speaking events were open to the public.

Tickets for a political debate?? Sheesh! Politician's always wanting money, not necessarily the vote.
Wouldn't it be better for all of us if the debate were held by health care professionals? Let me sum it up for anyone interested in attending:
Dean: the federal government should control all health care decisions!
Gingrich: the federal government should control a little bit less than his plan!
These spoiled children in Washington have a serious wake up call due to them.
Aren't they planning to vote before end of July anyway. Point is moot in October.
Maybe they could bring folks with various malady's on stage and have a bureaucrat say what the government (you and me) will pay for, what Dean would pay for and what Newt would pay for.
Oh great! Just what we need. Another debate between a giant douche and a turd sandwich...

uberfan: you say the debate should be by "health care professionals". Who, may I ask you, has screwed up the health care in this country? It has been the health professionals. Everyone in the health care profession has increased and increased and increased their prices. Be they the Doctors or the drug manufactors. They have always known that their products would be paid by insurance companies or the federal government. Do away with ALL health insurance. Employers should give to the employees that money they are paying for their insurance. Without insurance the people would stop running to the emergency room when Little Johnny skins his knee or when Little Jane has a 2-degree fever. I managed to live my first 16 years without going to a doctor. The last time I checked, at 72-years old I am in pretty good condition. Think about it neighbor, think about it!!!
Good points mo_ky. Health insurance IS socialism. That's why it doesn't work in the first place.
Government Run Health Insurance (GRIP) is right down Obama's socialist alley! Wait till they get you in their GRIP!
Newt Gingrich and Howard Dean. Now there's a couple of chuckleheads!
