Speak Out 6/22/09

Monday, June 22, 2009
Funny singer

NEAL Boyd was on the radio today. He is a wonderful singer, Christian, patriot and comedian. One of the funny things he said is that he is "Halfrican American." Neal is performing with Kenny Rogers in Sikeston this month.

Prizes for columnist

"THE only thing I know for certain about human nature is that I know nothing." -- Michael Jensen. This quote (from a recently published column) is what makes Jensen such a remarkable journalist. What Jensen said about himself is not self-deprecation. It is the absolute truth. Yet this man has been able to sustain a career in journalism for decades, writing thousands of columns claiming insight into various aspects of (you guessed it) human nature. No journalist in history who knows nothing about human nature can come close to achieving what Jensen has and be a blank slate about behaviorist psychology, cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and its various subfields, evolutionary psychology and so on, all of which give us valuable insight into motivation and other aspects of human nature. Thus, since Jensen knows nothing about these matters and has still been able to sustain a brilliant and remarkable career in journalism, I think he is worthy of no less than a Pulitzer Prize, a Nobel Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Teen achievement

WE'RE always running down teens, and I'm sick of it. They are superior in many ways to older generations. They deserve so much more credit than they receive. For example, my sincere congratulations goes out to the 15-year-old girl who won a national title and $50,000 for being able to send an incredible 14,000 text messages per month.

Southeast parking

HOW many parking lots does Southeast Missouri State University need? Wouldn't it be better to build one or two multilevel parking garages instead of sprawling out? At this rate, most of Cape Girardeau will be a huge parking lot for Southeast.

Indecent photo

YOU should be ashamed for the picture that was in the paper regarding sun protection. There is no need for a woman's swimsuit being cut so high. It's indecent. Just what does an editor edit in the newspaper anymore? Standards of decency don't seem to be it.

Internet issues

WHY do the news media and advertisers assume that everybody has Internet access? If you need information or want to do this or want to do that, they give you a website to contact. There are a lot of people who don't have Internet access. They don't have a computer. There are still people who go places and buy things and spend money. But they are ignored for the most part by today's media.

List of wrongs

WHAT is wrong with America? Sexism, drugs, violence, greed, political corruption, extravagance, attitudes, pollution, the mob, gambling, the media, unnecessary bureaucracy, unnecessary laws, the forced proliferation of Western culture in other nations, an ineffective employment system, lack of reality, bigotry, disparity in the economic system, fascism, sloth, an oversexed populace, poor-quality goods, lack of savings, cheating, crime, hedonism, poor nutrition, packaging used for goods, dysfunctional families, illiteracy, crass and base behavior, misunderstandings, devil worshippers, technocultures, abuse of news, inefficiency.

Nasty restrooms

CAPE Girardeau's parks overall are beautiful. But the bathrooms are always nasty. It's like they're never cleaned.

Blattner pride

HOORAY for our hometown Nancy Blattner. We should be proud.

Paper is better

PAPER is all right for me. You can replant trees. Plastic is an unnatural thing, and it's harder on the Earth. It takes longer to decompose. And I just think it's stupid to use all those plastic bags when paper is easier on Mother Earth.

Ambulance stop

WHAT was the Oklahoma state trooper thinking of when he pulled over an ambulance? If that were my loved one in the back of that ambulance and I were following it, he would have had a reason to arrest someone.

Parking garage

I AM disgusted to read in the paper that the reason they're tearing down Howard's and the old Sinclair gas station on Broadway is to make parking spaces for Southeast Missouri State University. Broadway still is one of the main thoroughfares of Cape Girardeau, and more parking does absolutely nothing to make our town more economically viable or attractive or anything else. The other piece of the problem is that students don't want to park on Broadway. It would be better to use whatever money the university has to build a parking garage.

Malpractice caps

I saw on the news where President Obama went to talk about health-care reform to the American Medical Association and the doctors had the nerve to boo our president simply because he won't support what the doctors want: caps on medical malpractice awards. What the country ought to do before even considering passing caps on medical malpractice is ask the opinion of the nurses. You will find that a huge percentage of nurses are against caps on damages against doctors. You would not believe what we have seen. There are a lot of really good, caring doctors, but there are also ones who are not.

No increase

REGARDING no raise for Social Security checks: We need to write our federal legislators. There is no need to bail out banks and leave these poor people, who cannot work or depend on Social Security, in a lurch. Something is seriously is wrong with this.

Corruption exposed

THE president recently fired two inspectors general who exposed corruption in his government programs. The abuses they unearthed should have been followed up on, but the only follow-up the IGs got was the boot for making Obama look bad. It's a typical abuse of power for the Obama administration. And what is the press talking about? He managed to kill a fly while appearing on a ... television program. Is that good reporting?

Homeless option

REGARDING the homeless situation: I have a friend who works at the Cape Girardeau County Health Department. He says that the health department has a new addition to its building, which now has a large, finished basement. He said the health department doesn't use it for anything. He says that it would make a perfect place for a temporary homeless shelter. We all pay taxes to support the health department, so what would this hurt?

Nervy newspaper

I wish you would quit publishing articles from The Wall Street Journal telling Missourians how to best run its state court system. It's quite nervy of any publication with the name Wall Street in it to even remotely think citizens will believe it knows best.

Presidential cults

FOR the umpteenth time, the tempestuous enfant terrible of egregiously enervating right-wing writing tribe, David Limbaugh, has written that about two-thirds of the American people are in effect transfixed by a cult of President Barack Obama. I would suggest that if Mr. Limbaugh can do no better than this in explaining the popularity of President Obama, he might consider taking the summer off and try to come up with better reasons to explain the president's popularity. In a way, I can understand why he thinks his explanation is accurate, because Limbaugh himself was and remains a disciple of the cult of Ronald Reagan.

It's your fault

IT'S about time you guys back off President Obama. Like it or not, he is our president. He can't be expected to fix all of your problems and Bush's mistakes in just a few months. You were quiet when President Bush was starting a war with a sovereign nation for no legitimate reason, and when the economy started it's death spiral seven years into Bush's presidency. The financial and automotive industry failures are neither Obama's nor Bush's fault. It is your fault. You tell the corporations what to offer when you spend your money. You kept buying obscenely impractical vehicles, kept borrowing money for things you didn't need and couldn't afford. Consumer irresponsibility led us to this place.

Close Gitmo

GITMO needs to be closed. It is a bloody stain on our national honor, a disgrace to us all. It's doubtful that these suspects could escape from one of our supermax prisons. Do we really believe in our method of justice?

Demoralized nation

THE Founding Fathers being mainly Christians and creating separation of church and state for the purpose of keeping government out of the church is not a theory. It's fact. Evolution is a theory. Noah Webster wrote the dictionary with the Bible as references for his definitions. He coined one word: Demoralize, and defined it as "To corrupt or undermine the morals of; to destroy or lessen the effect of moral principals on; to render corrupt in morals." In 1828 he saw the America of today coming. Check out his original 1828 dictionary. You'd be amazed.

A HUGE thanks to all the locals who helped make the Cape Central 1969 Reunion so special for us returning out-of-towners. It was GREAT!!

I hope everyone had a terrific "Father's Day"... God bless all the Dads!!!

-- Posted by crm71mo on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:57 AM

Funny singer: Doesn't the word "funny" have deviate cannotations these days? I'm surprised it isn't also banned by the Missourian Censor Thingy. "Halfrican American" ? Isn't that offensive...to someone??

Prizes for columnist: Blah blah blah.

Teen achievement: LOL! Come on! This is a bit unfair. We'd didn't have competitions like this for "Who had the biggest brick cellphone, or oldest bag phone" Kills me about these video game tournaments too. Did we have one for Pong?? LOL!

Southeast parking: I was thinking the same thing. It would definately conserve space. The hospitals both do it.

Indecent photo: LOL! What DO they edit? The word "screw." or at least they did.

Internet issues: Exactly, I bet nationwide, it's still under 30%, though I'd like to see the real numbers.

List of wrongs: While I agree with most of these, I had to laugh at Sexism?? HA! Darlin...the gender gap has completely disappeared. Just look at the familial roles...

Nasty restrooms: Probably the homeless or drugdealers doing it.

Blattner pride: Why?? What did she do?

Paper is better: Same here. When asked, I always say paper.

Ambulance stop: What was he thinking? Power trip?

Parking garage: Yes! Parking Garages! Let's protest!

Malpractice caps: Yeah...and Bush put on Caps, and the price of medical costs were supposed to go down. Hmm....how'd that work for us??

No increase: Hold on there, I'd like to have something left for when I turn 68.

Corruption exposed: What did they unearth? How do you know? You should have mentioned it in your call.

Homeless option: Go for it! *rolling eyes*

Nervy newspaper: LOL! Touche'!

Presidential cults: Cults?? Btw, when are those sacrificial lamb meetings again? I haven't received my monthly issue of the Presidential Cult Times in a couple of months.

It's your fault: Blah blah blah.

Close Gitmo: Off with their heads!

Demoralized nation: Hmmm.

Whew! What a way to start a Monday!

Megalo,

Every post in today's SO is offensive to me.

I will now go take some anti-depressants and hope I don't wet the bed again.

Everybody ******* about the lack of parking at SEMO, and then ******* when parking facilities are built.

The new SO catch phrase is "I think it's sad when...".

I bet Noah Webster didn't predict "twitter", or "flesh colored, glow in the dark, magnetic Jesus". He was a hack.

Where can I join the Cult of Evel Knievel?

The Wall Street Journal doesn't sh** from Cheyene. I liked them better when they were Bruce Springsteen's backup band.

Those crazy teens with their text messaging, and indecent swim suits, and parking garages, and cults, and Dan Folgerberg records!

-- Posted by lumpy on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 5:21 AM

Geez, now Gerald Jones will have to ban The Southeast Missourian in county owned buildings so David Ludwig can't look at the pictures.

-- Posted by Red Devil on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 6:46 AM

Good morning! ☺

Funny singer..."Halfrican American." lol

Prizes for columnist...alrighty then!

Teen achievement...WOW! 14,000 text messages!

Southeast parking....I wonder if any students use the transit system?

Indecent photo....swimsuit cut so high, what does that mean? Low I get, high?

Internet issues....I have noticed this as well, the news media & advertisers should be more considerate to those who do not have/want internet access.

List of wrongs....OMG! Now can we have a list of what's right w/America?

Nasty restrooms...at least you got in! Everytime I try to use them they are locked.

Paper is better...many people reuse/recycle the plastic bags!

Ambulance stop....yes I agree.

Parking garage.....disgusted, eh? You would rather see abandoned, detoriating bldgs. than a parking garage, whatever!

Malpractice caps...This whole idea is bothersome to me, seems to me if a 'doc' was found negligent many times he would be stripped of his license therefore capping his malpractice suits.

No increase...correct me if I am wrong but aren't we talking about like $10. per month here???

Corruption exposed...what fly? ☺

Homeless option....we don't need any options.

Nervy newspaper....lol!

Presidential cults...ouch.

It's your fault...alrighty, that irked me a lil' bit.

Close Gitmo...good grief!

Demoralized nation....evolution is a theory, 1828 vocabulary!

WOW! That was TOOO many comments! Yesterday there were three, today there is twenty! I'm very annoyed!

List of Wrongs

Even the folks on SO cannot fix all of those in just one day. Bet it'll take a week anyway.

WOW! That was TOOO many comments! Yesterday there were three, today there is twenty! I'm very annoyed!

Turnip

You still "annoyed" with me also?

-- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 9:26 AM

Wheels,

AC "SALES" guy just stopped by. Going to be around $8500 to get me set up with one of this "tax rebate" type of systems. (I might go on and get that new electric box too)

-- Posted by Megalomania on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 9:56 AM

Warble, warble.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:10 AM

Megalo

I am so far out of the loop that I do not know if or not that is a good deal, and it of course depends on what he is doing for you.

If you want you can e-mail me details and I will ask my son-in-law's guy what he thinks. Might look at the equipment just under the rebate level and see how much you are spending just to get the rebate. I have heard there is a significant jump in the equipment pricing at that point.

Other side of things, is if you know the guy you are dealing with and trust him, that is a strong point. Not interested in Monday morning quarter backing but if can shoot you a couple of pointers would be happy to do so.

-- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:30 AM

Oh, Gitmo may very well one day be closed ... at a price tag of $80 million plus millions more to open up a new one.

Where's the outcry against "prolonged detention"? Where's the outcry against the once unjust wars? Where's the outcry against the Dem version of FISA? Where's the outcry against outsourced interogation? Where are the CodePinkers? Where did Cindy Sheehan go? Journet? Sanders? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

As I've said before, Liberals wanting control of the gov't are a lot like a dog chasing a car ... once they catch it, they don't know what to do.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:31 AM

Wheels, what'cha talkin' about? I wasn't annoyed by you. I was just curious as to why you always 'yell' at me first, got my answer. ☻

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:33 AM

SD,

Thanks ... I pointed out the hyprocisy of the banishment standard, but to no avail.

I hope you had a good Father's day.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:34 AM

YouCannot .CensorMe ...you might be fighting a losing battle...

-- Posted by *Rick* on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:40 AM

UCMe, "I pointed out the hyprocisy of the banishment standard"

What exactly is that?

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:40 AM

Oh, it's never the Turdlip's fault. She's just standing up for all the Rosie the Rivetors out there. Her mixed heritage allows her to throw around racial slurs and talk about kicking "arse". And when she gets mad ... it's a tacornado!

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:40 AM

Rick - You're probably right, but it was was worth a try.

Turnip - Oh, I think you know....

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:44 AM

Wheels,

I think that tax rebate only applies if the machine is at least 80% efficient (the way I understood it)

-- Posted by Megalomania on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:47 AM

UCMe, You think you got banned over lil' ol' me?? That's funny. Wake up, dude. There is a difference between teasing & being serious. I have never threatened anyone in a serious manner, nor would I do so. Much less spoke of someones home address/name, that's too far. If it makes you feel any better, I thought Cycle should have been banned as well, he 'egged' you on.....

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:48 AM

Wheels, what'cha talkin' about? I wasn't annoyed by you. I was just curious as to why you always 'yell' at me first, got my answer. ☻

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:33 AM

Turnip, Turnip, Turnip

You mistake a little friendly ribbing for yelling. I don't want to come off as yelling. I have no authority to yell at you, I just want to get a rise out of you from time to time.

And you do present the opportunity dontcha know?

-- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:48 AM

"Where did Cindy Sheehan go?"

UCCM,

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/bethlehe...

But...I'll agree, she's faded from the political scene faster than a lifetime Oriole Fan.

-- Posted by Megalomania on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:51 AM

Megalo

Not sure what the threshhold is for the rebate program but have been told it was pretty high, both in efficiency and price.

At the time I was conversing about it, I wasn't that much interested in doing a crash course in finding out.

You however need to do so before you turn loose of your hard earned cash.

-- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:54 AM

Turdlip,

Funny, you didn't take issue with BiggotDog? I understand ... the whole birds of a feather flock together thing (or "thang" if that's how it comes out of your "mouf"). Your hypocrisy is thicker than salsa.

It's OK, the "honkey" is back.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:57 AM

Wheels, I know you are just teasin', so am I! Although it would be nice if you would 'rib' some of these boys once in awhile. ☻

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 10:57 AM

Megal,

I guess she'll be camping outside of Obama's house any day now protesting the "unjust" war(s). Oh wait, war is only wrong when W was the POTUS.

UCMe, r u serious? I didn't have any issues with BigDogg? sadly, you are confused and talking out your ars...if it makes you feel better to blame me then 'knock yourself out'. I'm sure it had nothing to do with your persistent threatening of OpNo.

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 11:01 AM

btw, who are Rosie the Rivetors?

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 11:05 AM

Turdlip,

I'm not blaming you for anything ... other than being a sometimes misguided igit. And that's probably only "half" your fault.

Any questions you'd like to "axe" me?

UCMe, as a matter of fact, I do have one question. What is my ethnic background? If you can't answer this question, you should stop referencing 'it', it only makes you look shallow and well I would assume like a 'misguided igit'. Now I'm outtie for awhile, check back in later, DUDE! (Look...now I could be a Olsen twin.)

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 11:17 AM

2/3 of the country isn't transfixed by the cult ... more like 58%, but less and less people appear to be drinking the kool-aid. Theres' still hope ... run to the light!

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 11:21 AM

I don't care what your ethnic background is. I wouldn't have known anything about it if you wouldn't have brought it up. I do know this ... you are a misguided igit whether white, brown, black, yellow, red, or milky way. I can tell you're an igit by what comes out of your "mouf" and your inexplicable lack of intellect on most matters.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 11:24 AM

For someone who doesn't care, you sure spend alot of time discussing it. "inexplicable lack of intellect"....oflmao...there ya go AGAIN, you moron, now insult all the not-so intelligent people. sheesh. lost cause.

Just got back from 2000 mile bike ride and I see we have another individual in here that thinks there is a difference between Democrats and Republicans!!

"Youcannot.censor me" must be blind and dumb.

My source states:

American Deaths

Since war began (3/19/03): 4316

Since former President George W. Bush delcared "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03) 4177

I think Jumanji, this is why war is/was considered wrong when W. was president.

Just my opinion of course...

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 11:57 AM

Wolf,

I believe there is a difference between Liberals and Conservatives, although the Dem and Repub line is much blurrier today. Of course, I also believe there is a difference between those who ride a real motorcycle and those who sit on recliners with motors (i.e Gold Wings).

If you don't like my posts ... move on down the road to the next.

Turdlip,

Yes, you and the Warbler are a "lost cause".

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:02 PM

Warbler,

I notice you've inexplicably left off stats since January 20, 2009. I notice that you don't have an opinion when we talk about the SOFA being ignored. I notice you don't have an opinion about the 35-50K troops who will remain for some yet to be determined amount of time. Of course, maybe you're just doing some long term Wiki research or Keith Olbmermann has yet to give you your opinion.

Thanks for once again proving the point, ma'am.

Ah Jumanji,

I left off the stats since Jan. 2009, for YOU posted a question concerning W. and he was no longer president then.

Wow, you are getting forgetful.

I would love to discuss an issue with you, but alas, you are incapable of listening. So if you do not like my posts...move on down....laughing

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:21 PM

Some who decry "disrespectful people" do not always seem to be restrained by this in their own behavior.

Just an observation.

-- Posted by TripleS on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:22 PM

Warbler,

Has Olbermann given you an opinion on the closing of Gitmo ... and related opening of another Gitmo for all the "prolonged detainees"? Oh, the outrage of holding those people without trial ... oh wait, it's OK now that it's been decreed by Obamallah.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:25 PM

Triple...

Show me the disrespect.

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:30 PM

Warbler,

Here's question that I posed, ma'am: "Where's the outcry against the once unjust wars?" It's called a thread. The other related post was not a question, but a statement. (If that's too difficult to understand, I can check with Turdlip to see if she can translate it into ebonics for you.)

So again, before you sit down to your soaps, has Olbermann given you an opinion?

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:32 PM

Warbler,

Is this where you ramble on about your opinions and judging and so on ... yea, we've heard it before.

Warble, warble.

Megalo, sorry I really don't know, refresh my memory!

Wolf, don't worry about YouCannot.CensorMe (JustMeandMyOpinion, aka JUMEMY) the only thing he knows to do when a disagreement occurs is to attack.

Megalo, I forgot, sorry. U missed the point, I did have a 'riff' with BigDogg, apparently you two missed it. I told him to shut-up once & then proceeded to tell him to stop being so disrespectful. He shaped up to, if I might add.

Turdlip,

What do you do when you disagree (bonehead, moron, honkey, kick arse, full of shat, etc)? You're a little hypocrite, but you make me laugh, my little tacornado. Yes, I attack, and I don't give you a free pass. Nor does Megal and others.

And I make no bones about my previous forum names. So?

You may have had a "ruff" with BiggotDog, but not a riff.

I'll take a #7 lunch special with no guacamole and some more chips please...

-- Posted by Megalomania on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:46 PM

You guys are right about not hearing from Cindy Sheehan anymore, but it's not why you might believe. She dropped off the main stream news love fest band wagon during the campaign when she slammed Hillary about voting for the continuation of the war. That was a no no. One is not allowed to tell the truth about the Clintons and still get on CNN and Chris Matthews show and the NYT.

She also made their persona non grata list when she ran for congress against the democrat darling Nancy Pelosi. Most people don't even know she ran against Pelosi because she got nearly zero news coverage. Here is what Sheehan thinks about Pelosi. http://cindysheehanssoapbox.blogspot.com...

I heard Cindy Sheehan here in Austin a couple of weeks ago. I don't think there is a selfish bone in her body. She hammered Obama in a lot of ways worse than she did Bush. She said Bush lied us in to war for his fascist buddies corporations and to start the ball rolling for the police state. She said that Obama was worse because he lied about ending the war and worse yet is escalating it. She said Obama is moving forward with the destruction of our civil liberties and the evisceration of the constitution including the second amendment.

Whether a person agrees with Sheehan or not, at least she is not a two faced hypocrite like so many other democrats ( and republicans) are. She has not done what she has done protesting the wars to be in the public eye like so many accused her of being. Even worse, war mongers like Laura Ingham, Ann Coulter, Limbaugh, and Hannity said she was using the war death of her son Kasey to gain fame. That was pretty sick.

If any one should have the right to protest the wars, it is Sheehan. Her son did pay the ultimate price.

Jumanji,

I favor the closing of Guantánamo. I am disappointed that democrats in congress seem to have gotten "shaky knees" now that they have a President who wants to follow through with their request.

I know that fears surrounding this issue are being exaggerated for political reasons, which is shameful and cheap. Only 50 to 100 detainees are to be transferred to U.S. facilities and these could easily be incorporated into our facilities.

As far a detention, I favor the suggested system of National Security Courts to try the detainees. Care to debate this?

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:50 PM

Jumanji,

You posted... Oh wait, war is only wrong when W was the POTUS.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 11:01 AM

I gave you stats as to why war is considered wrong by some...

You asked why I did not include Obama's term in stats, I said because you said when W was the POTUS!

Now Triple will say I am being disrespectful, but I honestly feel like I am dealing with a child here!

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:55 PM

Info,

Her son volunteered to serve. He believed that the Iraq War was justified, and it was his duty to serve.

If my mother and/or father were against the war, and I died serving in it then I would hope they'd respect my memory by reminding people that I believed in the war. I would hope that my death - my death as a result of fighting for something I believed in - would not be used to further my mother's policial cause.

The point remains ... Where have all the anti-war protestors gone? Are they still out there or is the media just failing to pour it into the trough?

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 12:58 PM

UCMe, I believe you teach people how to treat you. As I stated the other day (you may have missed it cuz you were BANNED AGAIN), but you and Cycle are terribly disrespectful and quite crude. U all made the rules, I just play along.

I must get back to work. I will check in later Jumanji, when you have had time to figure out your response...

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 1:02 PM

Theorist, I wouldn't worry about being disrespectful, who knows who TripleS was actually refering to, could have been me. ??

-- Posted by Turnip on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 1:06 PM

I believe one of the more practical considerations when discussing the closing of Gitmo is the same one being dealt with now by the state and federal prisons and that is what to do with them when they are released. Once let out the door the officials have no real way to assure that the individual will return from whence they came so they may very well be living next door to any of us no matter whether they have a support system, have demonstrated the desire to abide by the law or do any of the things which would indicate "changed behavior".

-- Posted by TripleS on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 1:09 PM

Warbler,

The POTUS favors "prolonged detention" ... aka detention without evidence for bad people. There is no trial, just a periodic review by the POTUS and a board. You agree on this? If so, you, me, W, and Obama all agree. Hallelujia!

Actually, I think you see Congress supporting the will of the people (for a change) by not closing Gitmo and moving those prisoners to the US. You can call that shameful and cheap, I guess. I think it's shameful and expensive (not cheap) to spend $80 million to close Gitmo and then millions more to open a new facility.

As far as incorporating them into our system ... I've never been a corrections officer, but I have taken POWs (many). I doubt you want the DoC guarding 100 hard core terrorists anymore than you want me, my flex cuffs, combat load, and my M4 gaurding the neighborhood crack peddler. Two different worlds. Two different sets of rights.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 1:09 PM

Warbler,

You just keep right on digging that hole concerning the Iraq War stats ... bring me back some General Tsao's chicken (when you dig to China). You should just cut your losses, little lady.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 1:12 PM

Turdlip,

I think it was I who said ... 'I just play where the playground is'. And this "honkey" has been dragging you all over the MONKEY bars every since you tried to be a big girl.

We "bofe" know how this will end ... You'll say something to the effect of "nobody wants to listen to our crap'. You'll ask me to 'drop it' and say a couple of 'whatevers'. And then tomorrow you'll "mouf" off to Megal or Wheels or SD and get slapped around again. (Is this how your real life goes, as well?)

Now where's my #7 and chips?

RE: Disrespect

I see my original response, which was quite brilliant I might add and on which you will just have to take my word on was lost somewhere in cyberspace. It was not directed at any "one" in particular as many on here have been "disrespectful" in the past and I don't care enough to do the research.

Triple and SD,

Well, about 7-10% of them (that we know of) will return to the fight. So, we've got that going for us...

You know, maybe we should apologize to all the terrorists. Apologize for capitalism, wealth, rights, Christianity, hot chicks, rock n roll, Wal-Mart, chain restaurants, SUVs, etc. (Sounds like a job for Northwoods ... unless he's too busy threatening to rape kids.) Maybe we should just release everyone, and chalk it all up as a big misunderstanding. We can find a few Mohammed Attas, build a campfire, and fix smores while the Warbler sings a yellow-bellied tune of indignation and hypocrisy. Ahhhhh, now that's a national security policy!

If you're done arguing, then call it quits and shut yo' mouf. Otherwise, let's see some of that bad mama tequilla you like to talk about. Or, were you just talking out your arse?

Yes, many will return to the fight and it won't necessarily be overseas.

What many people with good intentions don't realize is that with the focus on Miranda, interrogation methods and other changes is that in the future, far fewer individuals will be taken prisoner.

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 1:09 PM

Two years ago the estimated annual cost of operating Guantánamo was $90 million to $118 million. Spending $80 million to close ( though extravagant) would still net the U.S. a gain of 10 million annually.

The number of high value detainees at that time, 15!( a far cry from 100 hard core terrorist)I think we can handle that. No one said to treat them royally, but with justice and humane conditions.

You misunderstood my previous post. The shameful and cheap comes from the pessimists who spread unwarranted fears among the public exaggerating risks and worries purely for political leverage. I am not speaking about the congress who are suddenly scared to "put their money where their mouth is".

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 2:26 PM

YCCM,

When I heard about the $6.20 per carton, it seriously ticked me off! Now that I'm "clean", it is much easier to see the draw-backs of smoking. Appreciate the continued encouragement! (Now I needs to kick the cough drop habit. hehe)

Speaking of AWOL...Canned heat, The beat goes on...and the bloomers are doing okay these days. :-)~ Where are you buddy? Miss you.

CBabe, Hope you are lurking and you are ok. May need to borrow your pearls to go with (or without) my "little" black dress. ;-)

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 2:46 PM

Warbler,

You're not looking at the whole.

First off, Gitmo isn't closing (I probably didn't make that clear earlier). The US military will still operate there. The closing of the prison (as we now know it) alone is estimated to cost between $80-90 million.

Those 100 "prolonged detainees" are going to housed somewhere, and it's going to cost. And we're going to take more prisoners, as the POTUS doesn't appear to be in a hurry to end ops in Iraq or Afghanistan. So that 100 will increase to what? 150? 200? 500?

Additionally, the POTUS hopes to review the "prolonged detainees" cases on some sort of reoccurring basis. AG Holder and the DOJ asked for $60 million in 2010 alone to "handle issues relating to detainees including transfers, continued detentions and possible releases".

Additionally, you need to factor the costs associated with relocating recently released prisoners. For some reason, we raised our budgetary assistance to Palau by more than $40 million dollars ... that just happended to coincide with a Gitmo transfer to that country. According to ABC News, an official said the United States is prepared to pay Palau for each detainee they agree to house, but described the amount as "not very substantial." Not very substantial?

Is Gitmo, as we know it today, not humane or just? Either way, a majority of Americans would like to see the prisoners stay there.

I don't think I'd limit your comments to the so-called pessimists. WH spokesman Robert Gibbs said in mid June that President Barack Obama has made clear "we're not going to make any decision about transfer or release that threatens the security of this country."

-- Posted by YouCannot .CensorMe on Mon, Jun 22, 2009, at 2:52 PM

Me'Lange,

I got a verbal warno for fall 2010. We'll see. A lot of unknowns right now that may bump that to the left, to the right, or I may get to ride off into the sunset in CONUS.

I think most of us realize that, much like Iraq at the start of the surge, orders to Afghnaistan is not an IF but a WHEN.

No worries. That's what they pay us for, and it's a priviledge to serve.

As to your "energies" .... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. You minx.

On a different note - Hey, has anyone heard about the MO House passing a bill against using vaporizers to inhale booze? I'm not so concerned about the bill as much as looking for a more efficient way to get hammered.

It went from "smoke" to "partly cloudy".

I noticed it changed too. Must have been a boo-boo? I think "smoke" is used in forecast, where there are fires, like in FL or CA?

Hadn't heard about the booze vapor bill? I have been watching the motorcycle helmet bill (for my dad). Checked last week, it was still on the Governor's desk waiting on his signature.

I also heard that it included a provision that, if signed, will prohibit passengers who are under 10 years of age. I was too lady to research that as well. Do you know anything about it?

My "recliner on a motor" (goldwing) had NO mechanical failures which of course is more than can be said for many other motorcycles. Oh, and ofcourse I didn't trailer it behind my SUV. Oh, and I could hear my radio with NO trouble. As for smoking, I have not done well. Thats all I have to say about that.

That being said I couldn't help but comment on that Gittmo subject. I will make it short.

Megs - some A/C suggestions for your consideration, use as you see fit -

* R-22 refrigerant will no longer be available for new unit installations after 01 Jan 2010. While the regulated phase-out period is long, there is already some concern on the availability and pricing during that time. Also, the R-22 units as a group are not as efficient as the units with the newer, more environmentally-friendly freons such as R-410.

* As cold as you say you keep your humble abode, suggest that the premium paid for a high-efficiency unit may have a faster payback in your case as compared to 'average' - not only for the energy tax credit http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=pr... but also for the greater amount you will save each month as compared to a lower-efficiency unit. This can get confusing - but don't sweat it (ar,ar,ar) too bad. Even today's units that meet the minimum efficiency standards of SEER 13 should approach twice the efficiency of your current unit. The tax credit is nice low-hanging fruit, but as a previous poster mentioned - it may not be enough to justify the premium price.

* The new unit will use less electricity than the previous unit, if the rated sizes are the same. May be able to put off any electrical upgrades if amps are the issue.

* For what it's worth, the newer unit is likely going to take up more real estate - both indoors and outdoors - if space is a concern.

* Be sure to inspect the ductwork. General rule-of-thumb is 400-500 cubic feet per minute of airflow per ton, certainly no less than 350 CFM. 1 ton of A/C = 12,000 BTU / hour. Another general rule-of-thumb is to have 80 square inches of duct cross-sectional area per ton on the main duct header lines. Poor airflow is a killer for A/C - leaky duct seams, ducts that are too small (a problem on many spec houses), etc. - the unit is just not able to move the quantities of air where needed.

* Running out of thumbs here, but another general rule is 1 ton of A/C for each 500 square feet of house for older houses, for each 800 sq. ft. for newer houses. This area is probably on the low side for square footage per ton coverage due to the amount of A/C required to remove our outstanding humidity levels. Get a unit that's too large - will lose some efficiency as well as likely to have poor humidity control resulting in a cold, clammy feeling. Get a unit that's too small - well, it's going to run a lot and not be able to keep up on the hottest days. IMO, a properly-sized unit will maintain your target indoor temperature on the hottest day of the year, but will huff-and-puff and run all day doing so. That's OK - it's just a few days out of the year.

* While saving money is a priority, don't get too cheap. Household HVAC likely accounts for 50-70% of your utility bill on average. Your current HVAC failure presents an opportunity to pay a little more now in order to save a lot more every month over the next several years. Generally, it's not cost-efficient to replace an HVAC unit until it has failed or is facing a significant repair bill. If it helps, consider this replacement in the same vein as a major remodeling.

* If you intend to replace the furnace also - keep equal diligence on efficiency. Believe it or not, this area has twice the annual heating load as cooling load. Keep in mind that energy prices are going nowhere but up, the only question will be how fast - and given the current legislative 'climate', it's looking like some serious increases are a-coming. Offhand, if you already have gas heat, recommend to stay with it. Air-source heat pumps are nice on the wallet, but their heating strategies take some getting used to, particularly when it drops below 30degF. Ground-source heat pumps are really nice, but the expense of drilling a hole in the ground generally knocks it out of the water on overall cost of ownership - at least at today's energy prices. Also, with both electric and gas service from Ameren, you are paying $24.09 per month in customer charges / meter fees and associated taxes before you use even your first kilowatt-hour of electric or CCF of gas.

fxpwt,

Thanks for that info. It's pretty much a no brainer, that the time is now to get this done. I figured I'd have it paid for in two years in savings alone.

Btw, I've nominated you as Treasurer for the first three-years for the New Cape Girardeau Motosports way. (Where the current Cape Girardeau Airport currently exists.) Additionally, I'd like you to be in charge of all accounting for the First Annual Cape Girardeau Sturgisfest. (which happens to be the same weekend as the cardboard bicycle regatta thing.) So we've cancelled that or gave them the option to move it to Oakridge.

Hmmm, with the combination of taxiways and the runways - may be able to start up a cruising loop thing again.

People could park along the sides to watch and holler at those going by - then jump in their ride and make a loop or two. The runway marker lights would provide a nice ambient glow - fire off the strobes once in a while just to make sure people are awake to enjoy the experience.

With recycling being all the rage with some - could enlist their help to pick up all the cans (aluminum), bottles (glass and plastic), and sacks (paper) afterwards, which used to get us run off most of the parking lots of Broadway.

Perhaps a feature band-of-the-week to play on the current loading/unloading pad west of the terminal.

Heck, may be able to set up some vendors to simulate the 7-11 with munchies and cigs. Maybe sell some fuel - the tanks are already there - and turn a real profit, to boot. :-)~

...or use some of the cast of thousands of homeless in the general Cape area to help pick up afterwards..☺

Cyclist,

Moving 0-60 in 3.5 is PDQ. I don't know about my speed times. But I once hit 100 in the 68 Merc there on Nash road many many years ago. Later took it out on the highway late one night and hit 120.

in the 90s, I think it was either a friends Night Hawk or a Shadow? (motorcycle, don't really know the names of anything outside the Harleys) that I got up to 110, but that was enough for me.

Test drove a new cadillac hearse in 1992 and got that baby up to 127

and in 1995 had another friends Corvette up to 132.

That's been about it for me. I know those bikes like you have can go much quicker, in a shorter amount of time.
