Contact info for new VNA program

To the editor:

Bob Miller's article "Making new friends in old age" was a wonderful introduction of the Visiting Nurse Association Senior Companion Program, which will be brought to Cape Girardeau thanks to the funding of the Cape Girardeau Senior Tax Board. I'd also like to thank the Community Caring Council's Aging Issue Task Force, which is responsible for the initial identification of a need for the services of the VNA Senior Companion Program.

The Visiting Nurse Association of Southeast Missouri has been providing senior companion services in the Bootheel since 1988. We are looking forward to bringing this excellent service to Cape Girardeau County. Those interested in applying for companion positions may pick up information and an application at our local VNA office at 145 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau. The number there is 573-335-5256. If you want to talk directly to me, please call 1-800-286-5892. Presentations about the VNA Senior Companion Program and services can be scheduled from this number. Request for services can be made by anyone. We work to meet the needs of those with the least resources first. Many of this program's recipients generally fall through the cracks for getting public assistance.

Thank you again for your support. Perhaps you will take a look at our progress before the year is out and let everyone know how Cape seniors are impacting the lives and well-being of other seniors. I think you will be well-pleased.

VICKI RHEW, Senior Companion Director, Visiting Nurse Association of Southeast Missouri, Kennett, Mo.
