A psychiatric evaluation was requested Monday for Jeffery Earl Lattimer, 48, of Jackson, who has been in jail since he was arrested for the Nov. 2 robbery of the Horst Pharmacy in Jackson.
Attorney Stephen C. Wilson made an appearance in Cape Girardeau County Circuit Court Division I Monday morning during a case review for Lattimer, who had previously been represented by the public defender's office.
Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle said he has agreed to the request for the evaluation, which is expected to be approved by Judge William Syler.
Lattimer was arrested after he allegedly entered the pharmacy and claimed he had an explosive device in a gym bag he was carrying. Jackson police said he specifically demanded three types of medications be put into another bag: Fioricet, Xanax and Valium.
Lattimer was arrested Nov. 9 when the drugs were reportedly found in his possession when he was checked into Southeast Missouri Hospital.
Lattimer is a former police officer from El Paso, Texas, who is reported to have retired after 20 years of service with a spotless record.
Wilson said it is not yet known where Lattimer will be sent for evaluation or how long it will be before he returns to court.
