Charges filed against man arrested after I-55 chaseThursday, April 23, 2009An East Prairie, Mo., man is accused of leading police on a chase down Interstate 55 on Tuesday night, reaching 100 mph. Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force officers suspected James Powers, 27, was carrying materials to manufacture methamphetamine, said Cpl. Jason Selzer, Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman. Officers pulled Powers over in the Cape Girardeau Honda lot on Siemers Drive about 6 p.m., Selzer said. "When the officers got out and approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated, almost hitting one of the task force officers," Selzer said. Powers got on the interstate traveling south in a Dodge Durango. He drove off the road, struck a ditch and drove through a field to Highway E, Selzer said. Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said his deputies were posted at the Benton, Mo., exit, but the driver went off the interstate before reaching it. Walter said the state highway patrol contacted the owner of the vehicle, Powers' father. Using a cell phone, the father contacted Powers, who then turned himself in at 9 p.m. to authorities in Advance, Mo., Walter said. Powers faces felony charges for attempting to hit an officer with his vehicle and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. He also faces misdemeanor charges for driving with a revoked license. Powers pleaded guilty in 2003 to felony charges for possession of a controlled substance. 388-3627 Pertinent address: Interstate 55 Cape Girardeau, MO Comments |

This is where I disagree that these people need 'rehab' rather than prison. He knew what he was doin' was wrong, he was just 'freaked' out b/c he got caught...throw the book at him. Methheads are dangerous & menaces to society. They continue using b/c they want to not b/c they need to. Furthermore, these are the people that make it increasingly more dangerous for citizens to enjoy the great outdoors b/c of their 'labs" and make it more difficult for citizens to obtain allergy medications.
no joke turnip. I believe responsible (felony free) people should be allowed to own firearms, and I have some myself. It is ridiculous to me however, that it takes me longer to buy sudafed than a pistol. So...long story short, I passive aggressively sneeze and cough in the pharmacists general direction, but it's not their fault...so I guess I should start sneezing on the meth manufacturers ;)
Oye vey... please check ALL facts and proofread before running stories... isn't it SGT Selzer?
Teach your reporters to do at least minimal research... James Powers doesn't have just a possession charge. These are all from Mississippi County, alone:
Fail To Drive On Right Half Of Roadway, Resulting In An Accident {A Misdemeanor}
Peace Disturbance, First Offense {Misdemeanor B}
Oper Mtr Veh On Hwy While Driver Lic/Priv Revkd {Misdemeanor A}
Exceeded Posted Speed Limit (16 - 19 Mph) {Misdemeanor C}
Oper Mtr Veh On Hwy While Driver License/Privilege Revkd {Misdemeanor A}
Unlawful Use Of Drug Paraphernalia {Misdemeanor A}
Failure To Return Leased Or Rented Property - Value Less Than $500 {Misdemeanor A}
I have to ask. Is there a Lawful use of Drug Paraphernalia?
