Jackson's Small Town Boyz to open for nationally touring band at Show Me CenterFriday, April 17, 2009
"We all just freaked out," Nik Scarpaci said. "We were bouncing off the walls excited." The band, with seven members ranging in age from 12 to 16, will open for an all-ages concert at 8 p.m. today at the Show Me Center. Band members include Nik Scarpaci, 14; Kaleb Huggins, 14; Tony Busey, 13; Collin Barrett, 12; Taylor Barrett, 16; Melissa Colyer, 16; and Hannah Pfeiffer, 15. After a rigorous practice schedule this week, Scarpaci, said the band took off Thursday to prepare for the show. "Words can't explain it. I'm like so excited," he said. "I usually never get nervous for shows." After winning the Jackson Homecomers talent show in July, the band played the Mid-South Fair in Memphis, Tenn. Throughout the past year, it started booking shows at local bars and recording songs. "I can tell you one thing, I didn't really expect this," said Scarpaci, the drummer. Kaleb Huggins, a guitarist, said playing in front of more mature crowds helped them develop as musicians. Huggins said he and bandmate Tony Busey write the lyrics but that songwriting is a collaborative effort. "We just make it up as we go along," he said. "Sometimes we'll just sit in a big group and try to write that way." Huggins said he likes to write about life, mostly love songs for girlfriends. "That's kind of fun because you can put it on a CD and give it to them," Huggins said. "They really like that." The band members attend school in the Jackson School District and balance school responsibilities with their playing schedule. Scarpaci, an eighth-grader, said the band does not practice the night before a test. "My parents told me if my grades dropped, which they haven't, I'd be out of the band," he said. He said he enjoys listening to local bands, but his dad limits his time after Small Town Boyz plays its set in a bar. "He lets me listen to the band for 30 minutes or an hour and he takes me home," he said. Later this month, the band will play for a school in Kentucky. It was also voted one of the top 50 bands in the Fender Road Worn contest, an online competition. Huggins said he wants to study music in college, but he is open to a future with the band. "Wherever this goes, wherever this takes us, I'm right there with them," he said. 388-3627 @body copy_ragged right: Pertinent address: 1333 N. Sprigg St. Cape Girardeau, MO Comments |

Good Luck Tonight Boyz.....Kaleb I love your last quote "Wherever this goes, wherever this takes us, I'm right there with them." Just ENJOY the RIDE!!!
As a proud parent of the band I consider each one of you one of my own!!! You've worked hard and have earned this! Your Ready... The time has come... NOW LET'S ROCK CAPE GIRARDEAU TONIGHT!!!
I bought my ticket for tonight's show just to see Small Town Boyz
Rock The Place Small Town Boyz (and girlz)! Have a great time and get lots of photos.
Small Town Boyz ROCKED the house at the Show Me Center! The crowd loved them - true professionals. Age has nothing to do with talent - if you can rock, you can rock. I'm amazed!!!!!
Just be glad no one threw rocks at the rugrats.
Small Town Boyz were bigger than life in their Show Me Center performance. People who'd never seen them before, or hadn't seen them in a long time, were simply in awe of their showmanship, musicianship, and vocals. Don't know how young Small Town Boyz are and don't care - they're destined for the big time. They alone were worth the $17 ticket price and I would have liked to have heard more from them. Way to go guys! Cape Girardeau is digging what you do!
Small Town Boyz hit a home run at the Show Me Center. As a matter of fact, they had the biggest crowd of the night. The audience was screaming, jumping around, holding up their rock fingers just to show their appreciation. My college students dig this band and so do I. Lead singer commands the stage - girls screaming when he takes a step toward them. Guitarists threw down polished leads. Great addition of the back-up vocalists - a truly professional act. They've won us over and I speak on my behalf of the other 30 or 40 students that I spoke with as well.
Biggest shocker of the night for me and my friends because of their ages. They are bold and wild. Everybody was into the music. They brought down the house. Loved it! Can't wait to see them again.
ALL the band members command the stage! All FIVE members make up the SMALL TOWN BOYZ.
The drummer rocks! Great stage performance. He really knows how to rock the crowd. It was cool when he threw his sticks into the audience. From one drummer to another...it was way cool.
