Beauty of spring abounds

The beauty of most every Easter in Southeast Missouri is enhanced by the natural beauty of spring. This year, however, has been an exceptional one for flowering bulbs, shrubs and trees. That's because of the springlike weather we've enjoyed since the early part of March without, for the most part, the spring freezes and frosts that are so common hereabouts.

The early flowers -- daffodils, tulips, hyacinths -- and the early trees -- particularly the tulip magnolias -- have been resplendent this year. How many years has it been since the tulip magnolias bloomed and showed off their magnificent blossoms without a hard-hitting freeze? And this year's golden forsythia blossoms were breathtaking.

Thanks to the moderate temperatures, the forecast for the rest of spring's blooming frenzy is good. The dogwoods are bursting into their full glory while the redbuds, which have already put on quite a show, are still at their peak.

And then it will be summer, filled with bright zinnias, nasturtiums, phlox, daisies, coneflowers, roses and so many more -- all readily available at your favorite garden center.

Southeast Missouri has much to commend it year around, but there is something special about the arrival of weather warm enough to nudge flowering plants into full bloom.
