Too many distractions

WITH all this talk about texting while driving, what about shutting restaurants with drive-throughs? People are eating and driving and having wrecks. What about people who smoke? CB users? People putting on makeup? There are numerous things that distract you while you're driving. Maybe you shouldn't allow screaming children to ride in your car with you. We can't outlaw all of the distractions.

Thanks, Cape police

I would just like to thank the Cape Girardeau Police Department. We had to call them, and they responded immediately. They were professional. We are proud of them and want to say thank you for their help.

Right choices

SOME folks seem to have a hard time keeping all the government spending straight these days. But Rep. Jo Ann Emerson is making the right votes in Congress. She voted against the stimulus bill and $350 billion in tort money, and she has vowed to oppose the budget and its $3.6 trillion in spending. She voted for our law enforcement grant programs, Missouri drug task forces and border patrol. Instead of saying no to everything, Emerson takes the time to learn the difference between busting the budget and keeping us safe at home.

TV programs

WHY do we have to sacrifice our TV programs for basketball that not everybody cares about? Can't they put that on a sports channel so that we don't have to miss our programs?

Country living

ONE of the reasons our family moved to the country was to enjoy the quiet views with the choice of having animals that wouldn't bother the neighbors. We've lived in our home for about three years. In that time we've lost two cats and two dogs to the road. Living on Route B is like living on the Indy 500 racetrack. All we have left is our two kids. We would like to keep both of them. I've just been to another doggie funeral. Our children, 7 and 3, have been to four in their lives. If you drive on Route B, please use a little sense.

Paying taxes

A recent comment said 95 percent of Americans are receiving a tax cut under the Obama administration. Assuming the caller meant income tax: Less than 95 percent of Americans actually pay income taxes. Those who do pay taxes are essentially contributing to those who don't by funding the earned income credit.

Weathering the storm

SPREADING fear about President Obama is getting tiresome for the majority of us. Give the man a chance. He won the election not because of false comments about ACORN and others paying him and his great ability to write speeches. He won the election fair and square because of he understands what the majority of the American people want: change. Constant bashing of President Obama reminds us of why we like him. We are tired of all the negativity that so-called negative conservatives try to spread. He cannot fix everything. He never said he could. Many of you are not giving him a chance. President Obama is strong and will succeed because of his ability to handle pressure. He has weathered the storm before. He will weather the storm now.

Divvy up the revenue

SO-CALLED earmarks should be eliminated. Certainly states should be allowed to receive at least a portion of the federal taxes paid by their citizens. However, there is no fair balance within the current system. A handful of states receive more in pork than they have paid in federal taxes. The only fair way for the federal government to handle this would be to allocate a certain percentage of the tax revenue to go to each state.

Sending troops

IT'S a little confusing to read that while our country seems willing to send our military forces into various foreign countries for reasons that really aren't very clear, we seem reluctant to send National Guard troops to our own southern border states that have requested them.

No real tax cut

I got a real laugh when I saw the comment that 95 percent of Americans would get a tax cut under President Obama's plan. What they are getting, if anything, is a tax break, not a permanent reduction in taxes. Even that will evaporate once the effects of all this spending kick in. You simply cannot lower taxes on 95 percent of people, raise them for the wealthiest 2 percent and expect to pay for everything. Unfortunately, all hard-working Americans will likely see their taxes go up in time.

Litter dilemma

I am sitting here in my office looking out the window on this beautiful day. I just saw a young woman throw a cigarette butt out the window of her vehicle. I'm torn. Should I go out and say something like "If your going to destroy your lungs, please try not to destroy the environment," or should I not bother because it may start an argument?

Too many distractions

Is this caller DEFENDING putting on makeup while driving?

Thanks, Cape police

Loads of details. Will read again.

TV programs

*World's smallest violin* Television is NOT a necessity. You'll be able to watch American Fido or whatever the flavor of the month is some other day, I promise.

Country living

We can't help that you chose to live on a 55 mph backroad and you can't control your animals.

Weathering the storm

"He won the election not because of false comments about ACORN and others paying him and his great ability to write speeches."

Just keep telling yourself that. Has this caller ever heard of speech writers?

"He won the election fair and square because of he understands what the majority of the American people want: change."

That's one of the most pathetic excuses I have heard to date.

"We are tired of all the negativity that so-called negative conservatives try to spread."

Deal with it.

"Many of you are not giving him a chance."

When he legalizes cannabis, I'll give him a chance.

Sending troops

Pssst. It's a conspiracy. How do you think opiates, cocaine, and the like get into this country anyway? There aren't enough drug smugglers in the world to satisfy this country's demand for cocaine alone...

Litter dilemma

Don't you think that the driver would have been long gone by the time you got out there?

I would like to know when Jo Ann Emerson is going to do something for the working, uninsured as I go to work today and earn my paycheck I can't help but wonder how many people will go the doctor or hospital on my tax dollars, wishing I myself could afford to go.

-- Posted by blesseddaily on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 7:01 AM

You must remember that the 8th Congressional District that Joan Emerson presides over is the 12 poorest district in the country.

-- Posted by ithenana on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 7:38 AM

I would like a link to the web site/stats used?

I have googled and found this list of the top 100 poorest counties in America.

RE: Right choices - There are so many things wrong with your comment that I don't know where to start.

I don't want to go too far back in her career (she has always had a bad habit of voting on the wrong side of liberty), and I don't want to send your feeble, easily duped mind into some kinda freak-out.

Let's set the way back machine to October 2008 in which she voted for TARP One TWICE! Basically this bill has given the Federal Reserve unfettered power which resulted in all the bailouts we have seen recently, including everyone's favorite whipping boy: AIG!

The way TARP works is that the taxpayers give some banks a BUNCH of their money, and the banks loan it back to the taxpayers with interest and stipulations.

How is that for blue collar legislation?

JAE voted to bail out GM and Chrysler. Both have already blasted through their billions of stolen taxpayer money, and have slopped up to the government teat for more.

The result: GM will file Chapter 11 and Chrysler will either be absorbed by another automaker, or will put us all out of our misery and finally close it's doors for good.

Another fine piece of legislation compliments of JAE that has worked out very well for the taxpayer. Don't you think?

Emerson voted for the $410 billion Omnibus Pork-o-Rama after she added an additional $8 million in goodies to her $86 million tab THE SAME DAY THAT THE BILL WAS VOTED ON!

Last week Jo Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Emerson voted to punish AIG executives for receiving bonuses that they were contractually guaranteed. This legislation is especially vile because it is a Bill of Attainder, or declaring a person or group of persons guilty without benefit of a trial. Bill of Attainder is forbidden by Article 1, section 9, clause 3 of the US Constitution.

But hey, if your gonna be a socialist don't let an old, brown crumpled up piece of ********* get in the way right?

Emerson's latest kicks in the mouth to liberty have been to vote for the GIVE Act, and her continued refusal to support HR 1207 - the Federal Reserve Transparency Act. Her years of voting for the expansion of government have been rewarded with several nice cushy posts in the Approprations Commitee.

We can, and I have anaylized Emerson's entire career. Unfortunately, the vast majority of voters in the MO 8th will not take the time to do so, even though it is a matter of public record. Ever notice that she never talks about her voting record? There is a reason for that. She will continue to win election after election by depending on the votes of those cast by individuals who are easily wooed by pictures of Emerson kissing babies, visiting old people, and waving flags in patriotic holiday parades.

Don't be fooled! Emerson is a socialist and does not represent the core values and beliefs of the citizens of the MO 8th Congressional District.

Good morning!

Too many distractions...."Maybe you shouldn't allow screaming children to ride in your car with you."

Now I really like this idea.....lol!

Right choices....Emerson, I've always found her to be receptive & helpful to the majority of her constituents needs...

TV Programs: Finally a voice of reason....get them off CBS. Isn't this why we have ESPN????

Country living...Route B...here's a thought...check out the road next time u move! What would u like drivers to do, wreck to avoid ur pets...geez!

Paying taxes...appparently this is just a fact of life!

Weathering the storm...Obama, he won the election fair and square....can't argue with that......

Divvy up the revenue...get a job! :)~

Sending troops...'we seem reluctant to send National Guard troops to our own southern border states that have requested them"......look the situation with Mexico has been along time coming, they let it get this out of hand and they should have to clean it up. this is the same country that has never been cooperative, allowed fugitives to hide n their country, their politics are a JOKE, there has been cases of American citizens n their jails w/o charges for years...I say they deserve what they get...

Litter dilemma...if u r that worried about it, go pick it up yourself or better yet leave a note, u weanie...lol! :)~

Lumpy,

We actually agree on Emerson, and her lack of Semo representation.

I have a question for you concerning the AIG bonuses.

It is my understanding that the bonuses were contractually based on profits. Since the profits were not there, the contract would no longer be binding, correct?

TV programs

Mizzou 102 , Memphis 91

next week regular CBS broadcasting returns...

what a great game last night for Mizzou !!

Right Choices...

why does Rep. Jo Ann Emerson keep getting re-elected

if she is the devil's spawn ? hasn't she rode her

dead husband's name long enuff ?

u want change , vote her out !!

-- Posted by *Rick* on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 10:06 AM

Theorist,

I have no idea what this means, but the bonuses given to the AIG employees were "retention" bonuses. They were much more complex than simply saying, "here, you've been with the company for 10 years, have a couple million.". If it was that simple, I would understand the bonuses better.

What I do understand is that without the taxpayer funded bailouts, bailouts that Emerson is partly responsible for, AIG would've filed for Chapter 11 thus allowing for some wiggle room in their contracts with their employees.

-- Posted by Vandeven 2010 on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 10:07 AM

There are some important votes next week in the House. I wonder where Emerson is going to shake out?

Now is the time for real leaders; not baby kissing, flag waving, cheerleading ex-lobbyists.

-- Posted by Vandeven 2010 on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 10:28 AM

If the bonus was contracted as a wage...

"it's based on performance, production and efficiency"" the official said. "It has to tie directly to your performance, that you met certain standards and certain goals in order to turn that into a wage"

I guess the question is now, how the bonus was contracted.

-- Posted by Theorist on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 10:57 AM

Theorist: I may be wrong but I think the bonuses were given to reward for possible future benefit to AIG by the executives. They have knowledge and influence in Washington. AIG and government depend on each other in their Bonito Mussolini relationship, or fascism. Those who created the need for a correction are needed to re-inflate the bubble, or in other words prevent a correction.

Turnip....that website gives me some good ideas..thanks!!

-- Posted by *Rick* on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 11:46 AM

One would really have to be an idiot to try and justify giving ANY AIG employee a bonus out of that bailout money. It doesn't matter if you're democrat, republican, a Lincoln liberal or what not. S.c.r.e.w. their contracts. AIG was basically insolvent at the point of the bailout out anyhow, so monitary contracts would be null and void. They should have been "forced" to go bankrupt and saved a lot of headache for all of us.

I'm glad Congress voted on a measure to tax these bonus. The American public should be calling their representatives screaming for justice and for AIG to be prosecuted for defrauding the tax-payers of America.

-- Posted by Megalomania on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 11:58 AM

For the person who is suffering the DT's because he/she is Jonesing for the CBS All-Seeing-EYE "Programing", there is hope. I am not a doctor, but I've heard that you will probably live (at least a couple of weeks ) without T.V. "Programing." It may not seam like it, but you will pull through. We will all be praying for you.

Read a book, talk a walk, talk with friends. Maybe you could start your own 12'th Step recovery group for T.V. addicts. Seriously, why do you think they call it "programing?"

-- Posted by InfoWarrior on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 12:10 PM

Megalomania: This idiot thinks that the right course for AIG last year was Chapter 11, and this comes from a shareholder. But friends don't allow friends to go under. There is the mutual benefit to consider.

On the bonuses: Government needed the outrage to redirect the herd's attention from what is really happening.

-- Posted by James Nall on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 12:16 PM

Rick,

Awesome game last night. I thought they might give it up at the end there. Next up UCONN, that one is gonna be tough.

As for all you whiners out there, get over it, do you realize how much CBS makes during March Madness (last year $643 million). That's why they keep bidding on the contract, and they have it until 2013 so get used to it. Without that revenue you might not have the rest of those precious programs.

-- Posted by Producer1 on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 12:25 PM

Producer

i liked the shot right at halftime , the 3 point swish

from waayyy out...UCONN will be tough but i'm hoping

Mizzou is up to the task ..if Memphis makes some

free throws they could have won the game IMO...

yeah, that shot was great. It's the top play on sportscenter today.

Going into the game last night I didn't really give Mizzou a chance, but, I agree, Memphis did kinda hand them the game missing FTs. I dont expect them to get that lucky Saturday

Probably not, although debatable, the Bill has been written weasily enough to duck that issue.

Hilleco...I hope people realize the "hype" in this, cartels have been around for a long time, they have always been heavily armed. Mexico is a problem but it's not ours, nor do I believe it ever could be.

I read/seen somewhere today that we should be "scared"; the Cartels might infilitrate the southern states and create havoc....I think those states could hold their own just fine...(mental pic of Mrs. Bush holding a rifle...lol). This is also doesn't support claims for disarming citizens.

Theory Person

I have been sitting on the side lines watching you carry on what appears to be mostly a one person campaign to show that anyone who disagrees with you is irrational, unknowing and as you mentioned yesterday, mentioning a couple of people by name, pessimistic.

Did you ever stop to consider what the outcome might be if you are incorrect? And what if those you seem to have so little respect for, are correct? Is Socialism what you wish for?

Just curious.

Turnip: I don't know if Anderson Cooper is gay or not but I do know that his piece on 60 minutes lacked a little common sense. I don't think that the Mexican government feels that they are outguned by semi-automatics. It is the military grade weapons that scare the hell out of them.

-- Posted by James Nall on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 3:52 PM

Hilleco, I'd failed to read the entire article b4 commenting...my bad. So ur saying in essense the story is true, American military r supplying these weapons to Mexican drug cartels...so why "act" like ur "helping" them? what is the point...I really didn't see what his answer was either...

Rick, if I were to imagine, which I don't...what they r doing in those jail cells all day, it would be much more pleasant than what they might be doing in public?

Driving by these morons walking back & forth to the Courthouse seems to excite most...go figure...

-- Posted by Ike on Fri, Mar 27, 2009, at 4:34 PM

Turnip: I don't know who is supplying the military grade weapons. The cartels have plenty of money thanks to the dopers here in the states. My guess is that they can purchase whatever they want with that amount of money. What happened to the $millions in weapons that went missing in Afghanistan? Perhaps there's an answer.

I do know that my bolt action is no threat to anyone but a deer. And then it had not better be in a hurry.

Change suggests difference - essentially meaning that things will not remain the same - which essentially leaves 'better' and 'worse' as the viable options.

At best, 'change' gives a 50% chance of 'better'. With the gubment involved, suggest there's a 75% chance of 'worse'.

Suggest our government officials should be referred to as the merry gang of Robbin' Hoods. :-)~

As for Socialism - those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Ask not what you can do for your country, but what your country can do for you.

Got a bit of a chuckle from the caller's comment "Divvy up the revenue'. Apparently, the caller doesn't like the perceived distribution and wants to parse things down closer to home based on taxes paid. Continue that line of thought down to the individual taxpayer or non-taxpayer and life would be brighter.
