Letter to the Editor

Christians offer relief from sin

To the editor:

This letter is in response to the letter "As for me, I'll follow Jesus."

Jesus said he did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.

In addressing his people, he did not need to speak about homosexual behavior, because the Jewish people of his day were in agreement that such acts were an abomination to God, as stated in their Scriptures.

Homosexuality is just one form of sexual immorality, which Jesus declared to be evil along with all other sins.

There are hundreds of sins that Jesus did not specifically mention: spousal abuse, child abuse, rape.

Does that make these actions acceptable?

The new covenant does supersede the old, but that does not mean that God now approves immoral behaviors that he once condemned.

All Scripture is God's word, not just the Gospels. Homosexuality is specifically condemned in the New Testament in Romans 1: 26-27 and I Corinthians 6:9-10. The transformation Jesus offers is described in I Corinthians 6:11.

The greatest commandment is not "Love one another," but "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength," which Jesus quotes from Leviticus.

God loves people enough to reveal the truth that can set them free. As true followers of Jesus, Christians offer hope to all people trapped in a life of sin.
