I went to Central High School, and never were there any doors or anything else that were marked "colored" or "white." I hope there will come a day when this kind of thing will not come up. I had dear friends at Central High that were black and white, and I hate seeing my school dissed like that.
Who's listening?
THE largest deficits we've ever experienced have been with two Republican presidents, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. The Republicans can lecture all they want to deaf ears.
Top priority
SOUTHEAST Missouri State University professor Wayne Bowen's broadside against the Obama administration for seemingly reducing the emphasis on international human rights reinforces the ivory-tower image of university professors. The Obama administration has taken a conservative, realistic approach and, as it should, elevated the global economic meltdown to top priority, even if it means an aggressive emphasis on international human rights must be tempered with realism and common sense. It is exactly the right thing to do, even though Bowen and fellow human rights activists will continue their blowhard opposition to Obama's foreign policy. Human rights won't mean much if the world economy tanks. Though it's not an either-or proposition, human beings opt for economic security and having enough to eat rather than having the First Amendment right to scream about peace, love, drugs, sex and rock 'n' roll.
Blowing the horn
REGARDING the motorist who picks up somebody in the 700 block of Ellis Street every morning and who blows the horn. Be considerate of other people who are still sleeping.
Keep cats indoors
SOMEONE said cats are wonderful animals but are not outdoor animals. I agree. They are not outdoor animals because we have domesticated them. They do not know not to cross the street. They do not know not to get into things. The life span for an outdoor cat is much shorter than the life span of an indoor cat. All my cats are kept inside. We don't worry about disease or fights or getting run over, lost or stolen. Please keep your cats indoors.
Great concert
CONGRATULATIONS to the students and director of the eighth-grade winter concert. It was outstanding. The orchestra, jazz band and eighth-grade band gave outstanding performances. Thanks to the directors, Mr. Casey, Mr. Keys and Mr. Lamar. We appreciate your effort with these students and the great job they have done. Thank you.
Paying baby sitters
I'M older and have no children in child care, but I work with a young mother whose baby sitter requires four days of pay whether the children are there or not. When the sitter decides she needs a day off, the mother has to pay her and another person to keep the children. These mothers get no pay when they don't work and can't afford to pay two baby sitters.
Problem for boys too
BULLYING at school in Scott City also goes on with boys. My son deals with this on a regular basis. He's a good student and always has good reports from his teachers. He's been taught not to fight. Yet he deals with harassment from a girl every day. She makes sexual comments and harasses him in front of the entire class. He has spoken to the principal and was told it was going to be taken care of, but nothing has been done. I would just like to know what the school is going to do about this.
Lots of bullying
REGARDING the article on the bullying in Scott City: My grandchild goes there, and students are bullied all the time. School officials need to fix this.
Cats and dogs
JOE Sullivan, I like your column so much. The roles are reversed in my house. My husband has allergies, and I have seven cats. But he has built me a huge back deck, all screened in so they'll be safe. I take my cats, all seven of them, for a walk around the property every day. The neighbor's dogs came into our yard one day. Our big black cat took off after one of the dogs and bit him on his tail. It was so funny to see. I love my cats.
Watch the money
I am absolutely disgusted by the bailout-stimulus. So much of this money has already been wasted. I can't see that it's going to do any good. We need to watch where that money's going because. It's going to come out of our pockets and out of our grandchildren's pockets.
Two-party system
THE two-party system in America works. We're going through tough times right now. We'll come through it OK. Those who want something different would pose a danger to our country and our liberties. The Republican Party may have to reform itself, because it's no longer in step with the American people. But look what happened to the Whig Party. A two-party system is still best for our country.
Telling the story
I read your newspaper daily and have followed the Kezer trial and story. I thank your newspaper for telling the story about a teenager who spent nearly 15 years in prison for a crime that someone else committed. Thank God for people like your newspaper staff, Sheriff Rick Walter, the social worker and attorney Charles Weiss. God bless the boy, and I hope his life turns to be better.
Read to understand
EVERYONE who wants to understand what's going on should read Billy Graham's "Peace With God" revised in 1984. I guarantee you won't want to lay it down until you finish it.
Parents in charge
THE graduation rate at Central High School is 72 percent. The problem is the parents. Until parents are penalized for their children not going to school, the children won't go to school. Children are dictating to parents instead of the parents acting like parents and telling the children what they're going to do. Solve that problem, and you've got your answer.
Let's make it here
I'M wearing shoes, socks, shorts, T-shirt, shirt, overalls, coat and cap. Not one piece of my clothing was made in the United States. If all this was made in our country, think how many people would be working. That's a good thing to look at right now by President Obama and all the rest of our leaders in Washington, Republicans and Democrats. This would put our people back to work.
Music from the heart
THE heart is the seat of emotions. From the grand sweeping passages to the delicate and subtle nuance, great music is born of the heart. One cannot appreciate something unless he experiences it. As a writer writes what he knows, a musician plays what he feels. The divine rapture of an artist's ego that is grandiose can produce magnificent music. It may be that the use of psychedelic drugs diminishes the sound of the peaks. The love of a heart is projected through sound is recognized by all. It takes the time and effort of spiritual self-cultivation to live from the heart. It is one's life, its ups and downs, sorrows, joys, loss and fulfillment that embody the individual's unique and personal sound. Young people must pay their dues before they achieve attainment. Remember, practice makes perfect. These words, if studied and adhered to, may bring forth a well from within with which the artist can draw upon. Try it. May your musical experience be a rich and satisfying one.
All lumped together
MAYOR Jay Knudtson needs to come down to earth with us poor parents and realize it's not always our fault the school system fails. Some but not all the teachers don't care and are too critical of the students. This poverty-level, single parent's child made the A honor roll the first semester. How did some of you two-parent, rich families fare this last semester?
Fighting for rights
SINCE this is Black History Month, I would like to remember an African-American minister who fought for civil rights many years ago. He fought for the rights of the sharecropper. He fought for equal rights for all people. He even met with presidents of the United States. He was a Baptist minister in Cape Girardeau for many years. I would like to remember the Rev. Owen Whitfield, a man who stood for all people.

Monday must be Dumb and Dumber Day at the Speak Out headquarters.
Wonder how many bailouts Chairman Obama is going to give out this week?
I say two.
We might have to do one or two more bailouts after the mess George Bush left.
i want one if he's giving them away....
There will probably need to be a few more since former President Bush is also responsible for all this horrible weather.
Now can we be serious and STOP blaming Bush and Reagan for everything?
Not the way it was – revising history to hang on to victim status; and to promote affirmative action to stimulate a good old boy network in order to profit is as vile as the condition that no longer exists. Follow the money, always follow the money.
Who’s listening – apparently not you. Watch for a tea party coming to a local street corner soon. American citizens have their own way of drawing the line. As the great sage P.E. Sailor once said “…we’ve stood all we can stand and we can’t stand no more!”
Top priority – “The Obama administration has taken a conservative, realistic approach…” Change we can believe in? Yeah, right. And I’ve got some good swamp land I can sell you.
Watch the money – yeah, watch it disappear. Thanks kids, we appreciate it.
Good morning, all!
Rick, where u been?
Not the way it was...CHS...doors or anything else that were marked "colored" or "white.".
Does anyone know what this caller is talking about?
Blowing the horn....I'd follow the schedule and blow my own horn on ur neighbor's day off! :)~
Keep cats indoors/outdoors...enough already, do whatever u please!
Great concert.....Mr. Casey is an excellent music teacher! :)
Paying baby sitters....daycares have been doing that for years...it u don't show/call-in, u still must pay. Although if my sitter called in, no way in hell I'd pay her for that day! Geez..something for nothing!
BULLYING at school in Scott City....someone needs to thoroughly investigate this issue b4 something terrible happens.
Telling the story...Kezer trial....blah, blah..move on!
Parents in charge....precisely! :)
CGPS.....How did some of you two-parent, rich families fare this last semester? Excellent point!
Not the way it was: Many bureaucrats depend on racial divide for employment. Truth is an obstacle to advancement.
Who's listening? It appears that Obama is Bush junior.
Top Priority: It wasn't long ago that human rights in China was a Democrat thing. Leave China alone, they are a major producer of goods. Besides that they are our banker.
Problems for boys too: Sue for sexual harassment. Those mean ole girls need to pay for that.
Watch the money: All of the bailout-stimulus money has been wasted.
Two party system: Lincoln was at one time a Whig. How about no parties?
Ah Blogbud....
Your Santelli inspired tea parties were sparcely attended, even with star studded appearances by "joe the plumber", it looks like the nation sees this attempt for what it was. The best that can be said, is that they were held, so someone somewhere tried to organize a protest.
But you go ahead blog, if it can be done anywhere, Cape Girardeau (Conservatism at its strongest) would be the place......laughing
Cycle.......how's the weather, I heard this AM they canceled schools in NY for the first time in like 10+ yrs.....is it still snowing out there?
BTW: So that I am not rude, Lumpy...sorry to disappoint, but no, I am not stalking you nor do I have any plans in the future to do so! :)~
Old Federal Bldg. in Cape a homeless shelter or the new location of the Municipal Courthouse???
Since some may b a lil' shy.....I will start.
NO HOMELESS SHELTER! I read n the article: if u build it they will come...not only will they come, people will bring them there! Let's stick with the Salvation Army folks, by all accounts they r doing a fine job! :)
Paying babysitters----my sister brings my nephew to an in home daycare and the provider will just decide to not be open for a friday and monday but the parents still have to pay. it is totally ridiculous. yes daycares do this to ensure that the spots are full because there is normally a waiting list. it is dumb that inhome daycares get away with anything though.
Two party system: Lincoln was at one time a Whig. How about no parties?

Anarchy....or despotism, with you in control?
Parents in charge: I agree, there should be no mandatory attendance to schools. If you are not willing to learn, then you won't.
Let's make it here: Recessions/corrections are the times for entrepreneurship. Start on an idea that will produce goods that are competitive on the world markets.
Watch the money...
i got my mind on my money
and my money on my mind...
Theorist....do u ever feel "violated" by the government?
So, Rick....what u r basically saying, is you been out partying all weekend b/c you got your tax refund and went and blew it on liquor and chicks?
Turnip...
what happened to ur avatar ?
..i wish i was out partying !
i gave up the bottle 5 years ago , lost my best friend
Jack Daniels ...
Theorist: I wish no power over others and wish no others power over me which is antithetical to our two party system in place. Both parties appear to want to control every aspect of American lives.
One reason the "tea parties" were so sparsely attended was that they were held on a Friday. Also, there wasn't much advance notice.
I could've taken off work, but I prefer to take action with measurable results.
I prefer tear gas and billy clubs to Snapple and Joe the ******* Plumber!
Rick...which avatar? If u refering to your favorite... Lumpy said it was gay!
Eric Holder is appealing to the ignorant masses with his assault weapons control. Most intelligent people know that the assault weapons that he wishes to control are nothing more than semi-automatic rifles that have the appearance of automatic weapons.
I watched Anderson Cooper's tale on 60 minutes in which he added support to the ban. He didn't add that the drug cartels weapons were much superior to anything that Americans are allowed to own. Which begs the question, what happened to all the weapons that are missing in Afghanistan?
For a different prospective read Michael Gaddy's "Another Bright Shining Lie" at http://www.lewrockwell.com/gaddy/gaddy49.html
Turnip...
aww , it wasn't gay at all...maybe lumpy was toying with
your emotions for a minute ..i like it betters..
Let make it here: Its a global economy & if we can't make it better & cheaper then it won't sell, I've tried to buy American & cannot afford it on my salary?
The stimulus/bailout money has been wasted, GM & Chrysler have burned through much of theirs already & still have their hands out , they look destined to fail, Ford may yet make it (though not if the UAW has their way ), I've not yet received my 13 dollars ?anyone else?
Thanks, Hilleco! This is what I was trying to say yesterday, I still have so much to learn...guns not ever being a hobby of mine, it is ez to "scare" me, ya know! Mexican drug cartels have been around for as long as I can remember and all that entails. Since when did anyone in the US, politicians that is, give a rats-ars what Mexico thought?
Hilleco: I saw that where it was insinuated that most of the weapons were coming from the US, just another excuse to ban our weapons , they will still get theirs from wherever(even if they do come from here keeping Americans from having them would not prevent the cartels from getting them)...
Rick......maybe lumpy was toying with
your emotions for a minute.......is that one of them exaggerations??? for a minute....geez! :)~
BTW: thanks for not chiming in..now I own u one! :)~
Owe u one...u know what I mean! :)
Hilleco,
That was a very interesting article. I know you don't have a high speed connection, but for those who do, I am attaching a link to Jerry Miculeck who shows how fast a revolver can be loaded and shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uisHfKj2JiI
John Stossel has also done some good reporting on the myths of guns and gun control.
I also watched the piece on 60 minutes and those weapons are not available to US citizens unless they ave a Class III license from BATFE. Even then the costs is outrageous.
Hilleco,
Do you believe all men (humans) are good? And I mean truly good....not basically 'just'.
It wasn't a trick question, just a building block.
So, if you don't believe all humans are good, how would less government(no government) succeed? Civilization (civility) as we know it would cease to exist, and people would be able to murder, steal, cheat, commit incest etc. without consequence. Do you truly believe a nation or society can function without some type of government in place?
Theorist: I believe that private institutions in the real economy are better suited to the task of justice than institutions of the nominal economy. This recession is a result of the nominal economy and it certainly is not justice to those who are depending on their IRA's for retirement. Criminality is usually exposed by those in the real economy and protected in the nominal economy. Examples being Enron and Global Crossing. I don't have enough faith in the goodness of human beings to be ruled by them.
I don't have enough faith in the goodness of human beings to be ruled by them.

Nor do I, on this we agree! So, you too, see the importance of government towards maintaining a civilized soceity. As in John Locke, Rousseau et. al, contract theory, social contract implies that people give up some rights to a government (or authority) in order to maintain social order.
In any group, leadership forms (pecking order). Government helps protect the population from unjust leaders.
Theorist...I hope you weren't offended by my question, since u did not answer. My point was that just b/c one can relate/empathize with anothers' situation doesn't mean u aren't aware that their are problems..am I making sense? I just don't feel ALL issues are black and white. Like roll over or take arms...there's gotta b a happy medium.
Sorry turnip, I missed your question...
......Hit with ur best shot...c'mon..hit with your best shot...fire awayyyy..c'mon baby, u don't fight fair, that's OK..see if I care...knock me down..it's all in vain...get right back up on my feet again....hit with ur best shot...LOL! C'mon...now, Lumpster, that's funny! :)~
......Hit with ur best shot...c'mon..hit with your best shot...fire awayyyy..c'mon baby, u don't fight fair, that's OK..see if I care...knock me down..it's all in vain...get right back up on my feet again....hit with ur best shot...LOL! C'mon...now, Lumpster, that's funny! :)~
Theo - so much for the foreplay. The thought of a kind, caring gov'ment taking care of our needs just don't fly. That's why God gave us militias. Humans can be very good and just and gullible. Gov'ments need to be held accountable - either with sinking poll results or law enforecement. Slapping a little lipstick on socialism doesn't pay the bulldog. Presidents who can't prod the populace to keep a leash on Congress go home early.
enforecement - hee hee - kinda like cement overshoes. A Hoffa slip.
Blogbud....
I have no doubt, that without government, you would be one of those self-imposed leaders. You think you know what is best for all of us....right?
Government exists because we need it to rule the masses. Without governing powers.....chaos!
Love see how the DOW reacts to this BS that Washington throws at us like we "Need to eat cake." Blame away, but it doesn't fix anything.
Theorist, our founding fathers did not set up a government to "rule" the masses. I do not work for
the Government it works for me! Too bad this isn't true anymore. The chaos you mentioned is alive and well in our Government, and its greedy self serving politicians who put themselves above the will of the
"masses"! Perhaps we would all be better off without this government that rules with ignorance and takes what it can from those who produce everything. "We make they take" is exactly what its come down to in both the corporate world, and our Government. Just another opine from the Wolf no disrespect intended.
Fighting for rights
"SINCE this is Black History Month"
Uhhh....that was last month. Here's your sign!
