Important victories in the war on drugs

The so-called war on drugs is a never-ending one, but local police have picked up more than a few victories lately.

Last week in a regionwide blitz, the SEMO Drug Task Force combined with the Cape Girardeau Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies to make 28 drug-related arrests, including seven in Cape Girardeau.

The blitz found large quantities of illegal drugs.

None was as big as a Scott City bust recently in which 34 pounds of marijuana was seized, including a solid bale of the illegal substance. Police stopped a vehicle after an illegal U-turn on Scott City's Main Street.

Police are likely only catching a small fraction of all of the drugs that are transported along Interstate 55 and into our cities and towns. But they deserve credit for the arrests and all of their attempts to keep our neighborhoods drug free.
