Marquette can be saved with insight and vision

To the editor:

A Feb. 29 article states that the newly renovated Marquette Tower could be sold within three weeks at a foreclosure auction. This will happen if an agreement can't be made between Proust Builders Inc. and it bank to refinance the building.

Consider this: A few years ago Old St. Vincent's Church was scheduled to be demolished. It was to be replaced by a parking lot. About 1 1/2 years ago, Hecht's Main Street store was transformed into an after-hours nightclub.

The Marquette was saved from demolition in 2000 only to face, once more, an uncertain future. Will if face demolition again, only to be replaced by a vacant lot, a parking lot, a gas station or a tacky box store?

These buildings represent part of Cape Girardeau's elegant architectural heritage. They are part of what makes Cape Girardeau beautiful.

Please go back to the negotiating table. Crunch the numbers again, Consider what would be necessary to save the Marquette. This will take understanding, courage, insight and vision. I am sure a way can be found.
