Great posting. Many folks are unaware of the history that played out so close-by in the shipyards of Mound City. I'm planning to take some aerial photos of the riverfront where they launched the ships. If I remember correctly (and if they haven't been removed), the rails could still be seen when the river level allowed.

If you'd like to do some research into the history of the shipyard, I'll be glad to post some photos of the site as it exists today, along with your posting.

The next time the weather and my schedule allow, I'll check the status of the river's stage and see if I can get some photos of the area. It'd be a great idea to get photos of any of the old equipment from the shipyard, and there's got to be some folks over there who have old photos tucked away in albums, also. Yes, it will eventually disappear.

I as a kid, I remember being able to see the top of a crane boom, with it's cable and hook, standing above the levy past the end of a street there. This stuff is so interesting, and yet people don't know it's so close by.

I also intend to take a series of photos of the National Cemetary, and some other sites while I'm out knocking around. If you know of anything else in the local area that you think might be worth an aerial photo, let me know. I'm gonna do both film and digital.
