One dead, another injured after fatal crash on I-55Tuesday, February 3, 2009BENTON, Mo. -- A tractor-trailer struck a car being pushed by two men Monday evening on Interstate 55 south of Benton, killing one of the men and sending the other for treatment at Saint Francis Medical Center, Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said. The crash took place about 8 p.m., blocking southbound traffic. Motorists were diverted from I-55 at mile marker 80 and detoured through Benton on U.S. 61, Walter said. The survivor of the two men told responders the car had run out of gas and the two were pushing it along the emergency lane, Walter said. When they approached a bridge overpass near Blodgett, Mo., the road narrows and the truck struck the car from behind. The cab of the truck came to rest on its side on the left side of the roadway. The driver sustained bruises and cuts, Walter said. Missouri Department of Transportation spokeswoman Nicole Thieret said the crash could tie up southbound traffic for up to 8 hours. There was no disruption of traffic in the northbound lanes, she said. Electronic message boards on the highway were displaying warnings to traffic headed south through Cape Girardeau, she said. The traffic tie-up was expected to take several hours to clear because of the need to do crash reconstruction and wreckage removal, Thieret said. Comments |

These guys had no business PUSHING a car on the interstate. If they ran out of gas, either call someone to bring you some gas, or take a hike to go get some, leaving your car behind (hopefully as far from the travel lanes as possible). I guarantee that walk to and from the gas station is going to be easier than trying to PUSH your car TO the gas station. If the guys were pushing the car IN THE TRAFFIC LANE while crossing that bridge, they need to be cited for obstructing traffic. Heck, you aren't even supposed to WALK along the interstate unless it is an emergency...what made these guys think it would be OK to PUSH their car? Not just pushing their car, but doing so at NIGHT! Not the sharpest crayons in the box.
Just last Thursday, there was a broke down car on the I-24 bridge going into Paducah...no breakdown lane. The guy was sitting on his trunk waving his arms, but even though it was early afternoon, you still couldn't see him until you were right up on him. Luckily, westbound trucks were talking about it on the CB because by the time he became visible to a person LOOKING for the guy to be there, a truck in the right lane wouldn't have been able to avoid this guy....and that was during the day exiting a 55 mph state.
If there is any "victim" in this story, it is the truck driver.
I totally agree with you DIXIETRUCKER !!!!
I am a Truckers wife and these guys will get the blame everytime! Yes there are times that they are at fault, but the majority of the time it's the people who have no idea what a big truck can and can not do like stop on a dime or swerve to miss something that they can't see like lower vehicles. I'm very sorry for the loss of that man and I'm very sorry for the trucker who is going to live with for the rest of his life after he looses his job and probably his self confidence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm hoping the man driving doesn't lose his job. Accidents happen, and this sounds like an accident that more than likely could not have been prevented. This is a tragedy for all. The truck driver will probably see this in his mind for the rest of his life. I hope that his company will help him out, get him some counseling and get him back on the road.
