Sikeston placed under city-wide curfew tonight

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

The Sikeston City Council has approved a city-wide curfew from 10 p.m. today to 6 a.m. Thursday. According to a press release from Sgt. Jim McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety the curfew was issued for the safety and security of the city.

McMillen said only about 5 to 10 percent of Sikeston has electricity.

One American Red Cross Shelter has been set up at Sikeston's Field House at 300 Pine St. McMillen said another shelter may be set up soon at First Baptist Church in Sikeston at 1101 N. Main St.

He said that Missouri Delta Medical Center has also cancelled all elective surgeries for the next 48 hours. The hospital will conduct only emergency surgeries during this time. After this time period the hospital will re-evaluate the situation. Further questions should be directed to Judy Stokes at 573-472-7591.

A few businesses remain open, McMillen said. Those include Jay's Fried Chicken, Dexter Barbeque, Sonic, Chinese Buffet, Long John Silver's and McDonald's. Mission Missouri also will be serving food at 509 Roth St.

Those looking for gas have limited options. Those open for business include Huck's convenience store, Dave's service station and Southside service station.

McMillen said 911 should be called for emergency situations only. Any other concerns should be directed to 573-471-6200 or 573-471-4711.

I think they need a curfew in Cape City too.
