Speak Out 1/8/09

Thursday, January 8, 2009
Time to celebrate

I HAVE high hopes for the coming year. I have the gift of life, the life that the Lord gave me. I have a lot to celebrate. I've had my spouse for several decades. So I have a lot to celebrate because of the hope the new year brings and because of the gift of life that the Lord has given me and someone to share it with and a family that I love.

Keeping wages down

ONE OF things that I do not and will not ever understand is why Cape Girardeau officials are not more welcoming to higher-paying corporate jobs. They are so concerned with keeping the pay scale low so that it won't hurt small business owners. The problem with this logic is Cape Girardeau is turning its back on all opportunities to improve itself.

Bring on the cameras

I AGREE with the suggestion to place cameras at intersections in Cape Girardeau. I drive through anywhere from six to 12 stoplights each day. At every stoplight I can count three to four cars running stoplights. I am not talking about going through on yellow, but running the light on red. Cameras could bring in a lot of revenue for the city, and I don't mind them at all. Why? Because I do not run stoplights. If cameras are not an option, could the police place cars at the key stoplights in town?

Warming data

I GOOGLED global warming and found incredible amounts of scientific research against global warming. In the Antarctic, there is a record amount of ice. We've had record amounts of ice in the Arctic this year. We had one of the earliest freezes up there. Everything I can read points to people who have a political interest in promoting global warming, but nobody wants to look at the facts the other way. Scientists should be interested in both sides, not consensus.

All kinds of noise

I DON'T have a barking dog, but I also would not like people mowing their lawns early in the morning. Granted, a dog should not be allowed to bark all day. But if Fluffy wants to go outside during the day just like a man wants to mow his lawn, then I think a person has the right to put the dog outside. A lawn mower is just as much of a nuisance as a dog.

God's in control

FOR THOSE who are filled with sadness and hopelessness: Our hope is in Jesus. Our trust is in Jesus. All others will fail you. It's said that he will work all things for good to those who love him and are called according to his purposes. God's still in control. So be encouraged.

Emptying ashtrays

I AGREE with the comment about smokers using ashtrays. The problem is sometimes smokers use their entire ashtrays and then empty them in my front yard. I don't appreciate that.

Questionable plan

There must be something wrong with it. I liked the FairTax plan until I learned in Speak Out that one of its advocates is libertarian Neal Boortz. It is a moot point. The FairTax plan's chances of ever passing Congress are zero. Zip it up.

Time to celebrate: Praise Jeebus!

Keeping wages down: Corporate Jobs? In Cape? Why...all of the posters here in SO tell me they are six figures. How much higher do we need to go?

Bring on the cameras: Yes....blah, blah, blah. But you said, "I AGREE with the suggestion to place cameras at intersections in Cape Girardeau. I drive through anywhere from six to 12 stoplights each day." Are you going to be immune?

Warming data: LOL...Prat!

All kinds of noise: Yes, but what about lawn mowers in the back of pickups. Dangerous for the mower isn't it? We better call PETL rightway. Yes...that's right, People for the Ethical Treatment of Lawn Mowers.

God's in Control: Praise Jeebus!

Emptying ashtrays: So why would these folks be walking around with ashtray's full of Cigarette butts?

Questionable plan: Unfortunately, you probably just summed up Huckabee's chances of being President. Gee...Thanks.

Rick: Praise Jeebus! Won't you?

To "Bring on the cameras" Just so you know.....cameras will bring an end to right turn on red. I am in Phoenix where these are being used as well as speed cameras on the interstate and it really is a pain in the butt! The camera does NOT distinguish between a car running a red light or someone turning right on red. And on the interstate everyone will be rolling along at 70-75 and the come up on the speed cameras and slam on the brakes. The only good thing is law actually says you DON'T have to respond to the citation in the mail thatthey send you. Law says you must be served in person. It is actually costing more to prosecute than what they are collecting. The only ones that pay are the uninformed !!

-- Posted by mohacker on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 8:00 AM

mohacker,

Mor great points. I pray this doesn't gain any ground here in the Heartland.

-- Posted by Megalomania on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 8:04 AM

...why not have a cop car sitting at these hot spots

with a manican in the driver's seat all dressed up like

an official Cape cop...

a more radical solution may be to have spikes pop up

when a light turns red , anyone running the red light will get a flat ...

On an unrelated topic, are there going to be any local prizes for the college pickem game?

-- Posted by rh3a on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 10:52 AM

Keeping wages down

What I will never understand is why someone would come on a public forum and expose their ignorance in such a way. What “high paying” corporate jobs? If you have proof then by all means state so, but you don’t do you.

Bring on the cameras

I really wish 1984 was still required reading in schools. I don’t run red lights either, but I am opposed to them and all other types of surveillance. What the heck ever happened to the American love of freedom, privacy and caution of ever bigger and more intrusive government?

Warming data

They are not interested in the facts because it would fly in the face of “man is evil and the destroyer of the earth” so popular among certain political organizations.

All kinds of noise

We have kind of worn this out haven’t we; move out of town.

God's in control

I believe in free will and that nothing is in control or “free will” would be meaningless.

Emptying ashtrays

Well people throw empty cups, beer bottles, cartons and sandwich wrappers in my yard. “People” whether smokers or non smokers are often inconsiderate.

Questionable plan

That is stupid beyond compare. I don’t care for Neal Boortz either, but I don’t judge something by who does or does not like it; good grief. WHAT WE HAVE IS NOT WORKING!

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 11:19 AM

Red...

Laughing....

you posted "What I will never understand is why someone would come on a public forum and expose their ignorance in such a way."

What a perfect way to just "lay" it out there! We all say stupid things here and there, but to make a careful, thought out, written blunder.....laughing...

That just added a year to my life!

-- Posted by Theorist on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 11:52 AM

Most red light cams don't take pics of the driver so where is the "presumed innocent " I'm not always the one driving my vehicle...

-- Posted by rockman54 on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 11:57 AM

On another unrelated topic: I heard our "representaive" Jo Ann Emerson on the radio yesterday (1/7/09). She was already touting the Obama stimulus package.

First, Emerson claimed that there is "a lot" of middle class tax relief built into the package.

Thanks, Rep. Emerson for choosing to allow me to keep a slightly higher percentage of the fruits of my labor. You never pass down an opportunity to remind me that government owns it's citizens and may direct their destinies against their will.

Secondly, the stimulus package that is being proposed by President-elect Obama (a man who holds no official title of power BTW) is supposed to cost in upwards of $1.2 trillion before Congress gets ahold of it. In my book that's a lot of cheese. But, I don't have a money printing press in my basement either.

Wouldn't it be wise to read the socialist f$%#%&* piece of s^%* before endorcing it?

Just an observation.

We cannot spend our way out of the recession.

-- Posted by lumpy on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 12:01 PM

Theorist

Some probably think the same thing about what I post. I write more than I post and often delete it upon second thought, but I am sure some really stupid stuff makes it through.

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 12:05 PM

who bails out the $1,000,000,000,000,000,000

stimuli packages ? is it like a credit card , get

your money now and pay later ?

the whole deal doesn't smell right .....

-- Posted by *Rick* on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 12:08 PM

Well totally off any of the topics-I have to complain about this somewhere-what in the world was Laura Bush thinking purchasing a nearly half million dollar China set for the White House????? I mean seriously! This was such a frivilous act on her part! There are people so badly in debt and she gets to waste money on gold plated China! Whatever! And I think my $25,000 debt is so bad and then I see that.

-- Posted by lovemyfamily on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 12:25 PM

Lumpy...

I too, am cautious and worry about another fiscal gimmick like the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008. Perhaps (I hope) this one is a better plan and more effective. Have you read the plan? Where can I peruse it?

-- Posted by Theorist on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 12:31 PM

Emptying ashtrays

Empty something in their yard. Getting even is instant gratification and stops whining.

-- Posted by fajar on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 12:32 PM

survivor

Maybe she was doing her part to help out with the recession. Seriously though look at all the money tax payers work and give to the government that is used for things like this. How many millions of dollars have been spent to redecorate the govenors mansions, the white house etc, they don't want to be in a car for a four hour trip so the use a private plane instead. If they would start the budget cutting at the top then maybe things wouldn't look so bad.

-- Posted by semoangel70 on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 1:23 PM

So let's see, the country is broke. Listen to this: 60 percent of the people in America now say we are headed toward a depression, not a recession, a depression. We are in desperate needs of profitable industries we can tax. Um, now can we legalize pot?

-- Posted by GREYWOLF on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 1:36 PM

Time to celebrate: Very nice and refreshing little message. Therefore, I'm still going to wish you a "Survivable" New Year (in lieu of a "happy" one, considering the coming circumstances...just in case!), in the hopes that you'll be around to share the same happy sentiments with us when 2010 cranks up, out of the ashes of '09. Looks like you'll hang in there just fine!

Bring on the cameras: There may be a big-time caveat in play regarding these cameras all over town. Too many idiots with plastic stuck to their ears are already yapping away about nothing of any critical significance and targeting folks even in parking lots. But knowing there will be cameras all over the place, unlovely fleamales and metrosexuals will be flappin' their yaps while also huggin' the mirror, plastering all sorts of goop on their faces and raking their hair...in anticipation that someone might actually notice them. This might just turn into an interesting sport, where the losers get to be roadkill!

Warming data: Well, I suppose it's nice to see that more folks are finally starting to get a "no-duh" that Uncle Karl's dream about "socialism in a hurry", or communism, wasn't going to sell as well for a progressive (another good commie word) method of enslaving the world unless, of course, it was packaged in a ruse that could dupe the masses. After all, who wants to be accused of hating the environment...well, other than me (I enjoy chopping down trees just because they're there!)? So now we're blessed with global cooling, er, warming, er uh, "change" - ...ah, heck, just go hug a damn tree! - under the cloak of EnviroWhackoism, which I noticed started to ooze out of academia as brainwashing propaganda way back in the 1970s...when we were in major panic mode about freezing! Oh, well, looks like we got socialism in a real big hurry now, so we can wreck the environment all we want, 'cause what's the incentive to save it now?!

All kinds of noise: Geeze. More of the barking teachers/grading dogs mishmash again...or whatever. Eradicate 'em all, so we can fry/freeze/change in peace!!

God's in control: Well, OK. That's cool about the "Big Guy" being in control; howsumever, the PC Polizei may be coming to get you for violating their mandates regarding "diversity", and excluding the Godless socialist left. You must understand that they recognize no higher authority than the state, and their Politburo (formerly known as Congress) is mucking up and whacked out of control. So, please, try to be a bit more inclusive, if for no other reason but consideration of "the children"!!

If you will read the article correctly, Laura Bush did not pay for the new china, it was paid for by a non-profit group that is set up to replace the china periodically, Laura merely helped design the pattern.

-- Posted by changedname on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 1:59 PM

theorist,

There is no official Obama plan yet - just a bunch of vague references in speeches and what will undoubtably prove out to be a large, but severly underestimated price tag of somewhere between $800 billion and $1.5 trillion.

Remember when the Iraq War was only gonna cost $500 billion? The government eggheads are as good at estimating as they are at everything else.

The fact that the plan is still phantom only magnifies the irresponsibility of Jo Ann Emerson's support of it.

-Balance the budget

-Eliminate the income tax

-Recall most if not all of our military stationed in over 130 countries worldwide

Those three simple steps would result in true economic stimulus.

Then we can fix everything else.

Keeping wages down: Only through taxation, otherwise doubtful.

Bring on the cameras: Bring on the police state.

Warming data: Don't question it, you risk the salaries of those who choose to live comfortably without producing anything beneficial.

God's in control: Are you referring to GW?

Questionable plan: Boortz does claim to be libertarian. But finding a way to fund an ever growing socialist state does not sound very libertarian to me.

Men who grew up wealthy and those where wealth comes too easy often forget or have lack of understanding the values and ideas that generate wealth. Welcome to the world of government banking and its bailouts. And who says there is real respect for wealth generation in this country.

-- Posted by James Nall on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 2:29 PM

Lumpy: I remember the initial figures of the cost of the war on Iraq as being $50 billion, or one twentieth of the cost so far and there are a couple of more years to go.

-- Posted by James Nall on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 2:36 PM

Speakin' of commie envirowhacko global warming/cooling/changing, recession/depression, we're-all-gonna-die and other assorted gloom-&-doom hype, I'm inclined not to participate in such nonsensical fun stuff just yet. Tomorrow looks like it'll be a good day for my monthly Suicide Sanity Run to the St. L area. Gee, I can perform my patriotic duty of needlessly burning up lots of dinosaurs, contributing to global warming and perhaps taking a bit more of that chill out of the air, not to mention spending lots of money on nothing of particular use, other than just doing my part to restore the evil influences of capitalism!

Hmmm. I wonder, however, if I'm now required to apply for a special "Freedom-of-Movement" waiver from the Politburo for such an extravagant indulgence in instant gratification...if not at least getting the heck out of this area for a day. No matter, I'll exercise my natural rights of defiance and do the SSR anyway. Pluck 'em if they can't take a joke (see the story)!

Anybody need me to pick up anything of interest for ya tomorrow? You know? Wasteful fun stuff like exotic weapons for the coming "recreational revolution", perhaps even some WMD components. I could special order 'em from Iraq for ya, but that'd take awhile...I'll just drop into Hussein's Pay to Play the Chicago Way store, up in ST L for some goodies. Or, hey, how about some really neat torture devices. Mule & I brought in the New Year watching a cool show, I think it was called "Machines of Malice", which showed torture gear that'd equate water-boarding to SURFING THE SLUDGE SLIDE in Cape! I particularly liked the skull-crushing machine, and am thinking of recommending it to the fun-loving bunch at the CIA, before B.O. gets wind of it! Anyway, just submit your "chit" (the paper thing), and I'll see what I can find for ya.

Gotta do a little trip prep, now. God knows I've got enough gas hoarded for that beastly generator I haven't had a chance to try out yet, so I'm not hurting for gas for the van...might want to check on the status of the demons in the van though! Never know when they'll act up again...kinda like "Hal".

**Warming Data**

Wow! I'm not alone in trying to find information on both sides of things like 'global warming!' That's sort of encouraging. ~wink~ Said before ... when the proponents of 'global warming' stop contributing to what they are warning us about (private jets, huge energy-eating homes & houseboats), I might be a little less skeptical. Aw, Hill, your comment almost made me choke on my coffee ... "Don't question it, you risk the salaries of those who choose to live comfortably without producing anything beneficial."

**Emptying Ashtrays**

Don't see as much of that as I used to, thank goodness. Sadly, still see as much other trash along the roadways, though.

Red, sorry, but your first post has me ~laughing~ along with Theorist. At first I thought someone else had stolen your avatar ... Like you, I write more than I post...but still post more than I should.

"-Balance the budget

-Eliminate the income tax

-Recall most if not all of our military stationed in over 130 countries worldwide"

Won't happen, of course, lumpy. Our federal government is not set up to downsize anything, apparently. But hmmm ... could we vote on those things? Oh!... guess we already do, every time we vote someone into office (our 'voice' in government), then write letters to them which they ignore or respond to like we're idiots and they're the only ones with any intelligence. Mind-boggling to start listing things that we could/should eliminate in order to balance the budget ... but no President or Senator has asked for (or paid much attention to) my input yet. ~sigh~

Hilleco,

I would take a couple of more years.

Unfortunately, Iraq is now part of the American Empire and will have to be maintained.

-- Posted by lumpy on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 4:31 PM

Letter to the editor about our government running the largest Ponzi Scheme of all was interesting.

Realizing that this is just sort of comparing 'apples and oranges,' but ... in a household or even a private business, 'Can we afford this?' generally takes precedence over 'We want this, and we'll figure out a way to pay for it later down the line.'

For generations, our governments have spent money they (we) didn't have--often for 'programs' many of us all seem to want ... Suspect that we, too, forget about fiscal responsibility when we want something from our governments.

Incidentally: Always knew our federal government was overbloated with 'departments' and employees, but until recently, with all the news of 'picks' for various positions, had no idea of the scope of it all. Of course, that leads me to question ... How many of these 'departments' are really necessary for the running of the government?

-- Posted by gurusmom on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 4:42 PM

GurusMom,

Our elected officials are sworn to uphold the Constitution. That is their only job.

When our elected officials ignore the Constitution, it is our job as Amercian citizens to ensure that they are voted out of office.

Seems to me that neither side is keeping their end of the bargain!

"Though written constitutions may be violated in moments of passion or delusion, they furnish a text to which those who are watchful may again rally and recall the people." - Thomas Jefferson, 1802

Ponzi: Isn't that a tree? Oh wait...I'm thinking bonzi tree. Never mind.

-- Posted by Megalomania on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 4:50 PM

mohacker,

Red light cameras can detect proper right turns on a red signal and they do not snap a picture if the driver does come to a full, complete stop. The intersection of Grand Blvd and Chouteau Ave in St. Louis has red cameras and it is an intersection that I frequent. It'll snap a picture for those who run a right on red while it will not if the driver does come to a full, complete stop beforehand.

Want to disable them? Remove the cover in the base or look under the base as some are not grouted under and just start cutting wires.* Then run like hell.

*let it be known that isobar cannot be held accountable for any person's actions. Use at your own risk.

-- Posted by isobar on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 6:14 PM

I think that it was Gary North, but I could be wrong, that rated the Madoff the 6th largest Ponzi scheme. The largest is government debt. Not in order were Social Security, credit card debt, the stock market, and I forgot the other.

Ponzi, the Italian, wasn't even close to these schemes. I think that Madoff's scheme alone was 1000 times as big as Ponzi's.

Perhaps we should start calling them "The Government Debt Scheme" instead of "The Ponzi Scheme".

Gurusmom,

Some of my friends refer to me as sarcastic while I prefer sardonic; sounds better for some reason. I am usually able to control or at least keep it down, but then there are the other times. Oftentimes just writing something down relieves the urge or either reveals the pure idiocy of posting a thought, so I scrap it.

I hope you don’t scrap too much as I always find your posts intelligent, insightful and of great value; well the ones I agree with anyway…

Isobar,

I feel oh so much better now knowing that these nice people set the cameras up so properly, you have no idea how much more I trust them now and how anxiously I await there arrival. Will I need a flat head or Phillips head screwdriver…

Been wanting to ask you all day but this was first opportunity... did Grandpa John put you and your little brother in a car seat when you all climbed into the old International and went to Pete's for a beer??

-- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 8:58 PM

Wheels: Back in those days, what in the heck was a car seat? We did get to ride in front with Grandpa and didn't have to ride in the bed of the truck, although we wouldn't have minded. We were young but we partake of a little beer ourselves. Back then, you could drink beer if you were in the company of an adult. Heck half the Catholic kids around grew up drinking beer back in those days.

We all survived without the modern day protections, as did you.

Just pulling your leg a little. Won't be back to the old neighborhood until about April, but if you were so inclined, I'd buy a beer or two. I do a little Genealogy and wouldn't mind asking a question or two on your Dad's side of the family. But that may have no interest to you??

-- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, at 9:41 PM

Ways to fool the camera? Why not just stop for the darned red lights and then you would have nothing to worry about. Plus, my family would be safer by not getting hit by some moron running one!

-- Posted by Road_King on Fri, Jan 9, 2009, at 11:52 AM

Most red light cams don't take pics of the driver so where is the "presumed innocent " I'm not always the one driving my vehicle...

-- Posted by rockman54 on Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 10:57 am CDT

Boy are you wrong! they take a picture of the car/driver and license plate from 3 angles. They recently caught a suspected killer here by the picture that was taken from a speed camera with him driving the victims car. The picture was better quality than if you took one with a digital camera of your own choosing.
