Info about JHS issue

To the editor:

As election time draws near, generalities lose their glitter. Folks want specific reasons to vote for certain people or issues. I'd like to provide some specific answers to questions people might have about the Jackson High School bond issue.

1. It is a $27 million bond issue to make renovations and additions to the current high school facility.

2. The current high school facility has inadequate space for the current student enrollment and program offerings.

3. For an owner of a home with a market value of $100,000, it would cost 35 cents a day.

4. Bond issue money can be used for building and renovations only.

5. How can senior citizens on fixed-incomes handle the increase in taxes? Several methods of property-tax relief are available for senior citizens.

6. Why should I vote yes if my kids attend private schools? Your property values are affected by the quality of public schools.

7. For more information, contact the district office, 243-9501. Tour the high school. Tours are at 8:30 a.m. and noon every Wednesday.

I hope these answers help people realize this isn't just another tax increase. My husband teaches at Jackson High School. Voting yes won't increase his salary. We don't stand to gain a cent. In fact, our taxes would go up along with everyone else's. But we will vote yes because we care about the learning environment at the high school.
