A Child's Christmas Prayer

Mama sits alone in her rocker

Her knitting laid aside

She closes the Bible in her lap

Sees her child approaching and smiles.

"Hey Mama he says, "since it's Christmas time

And I know Daddy can't be home

"Cause children in another place

Are living in a war zone

Oh please Mama, don't cry

I really do understand

We still have each other

And our Christmas can still be grand.

Mama, I wrote a letter to Jesus

I told Him what I want Him to do

Can you please read it Mama

Check my spelling too?"

He crawled into her lap

And she rocked him as she read

As she read, she smiled

And in amazement shook her head.

"Dear Jesus,

It's almost Christmas

And it know it's Your birthday

But I would like a present for others

To have that day

I don't want any toys

And I'm OK with dad not here

You are taking great care of us

And Dad will be here next year.

But Jesus my friend Billy,

Don't have a daddy and

His mom is in the war and

Not just him but Bobby says there are lots more.

So Jesus, I'm asking for Bobby,

And all the kids like him

Could you send their Mommies home

It would mean so much to them.

And Jesus would you please

Light the candle in my window

So I'll know you got my letter

When I see the flames warm glow?"

Mama folded up the letter

Her child now asleep at her feet

She slipped down on her knees beside him

And thanked God for a child so sweet.

She carried the child to the bedroom

Cradled in her arms

Gasping at the sight of his window

The candle flame glowing bright and warm.
