Thanksgiving Day. The Salvation Army, in cooperation with the Southeast Missourian newspaper, sponsors a community Thanksgiving dinner to make the holiday a bit brighter for many area residents; around 265 meals are served.

A 1-9 football record didn't garner many post-season honors for Southeast Missouri State University; but junior Kevin Jones, captain of the university's cheer-leading squad, was named All-American by the National Cheerleader Association.

50 years ago: Nov. 24, 1958

With 243 people turning out Saturday for a special election, voters of the School District north of Cape Girardeau balloted for issuing $150,000 bonds to provide a new, centrally located grade school; an eight-acre plot on the Albert Hengst farm a mile south of Egypt Mills has been optioned.

Missouri's six-day deer-hunting season ended Saturday afternoon after hunters established a record kill of 13,369; of this number, 2,640 deer were taken in Southeast Missouri's 10 eligible counties.

75 years ago: Nov. 24, 1933

With the early winter weather favorable, Frisco Railroad employees have finished a large outdoor construction and modernization program in the River division; at Chaffee, Mo., about 500 obsolete freight cars have been dismantled.

The new Montgomery Ward & Co. department store, 18-24 N. Main St., will have its formal opening tomorrow; replacing a number of smaller buildings, which once stood there, the new block gives an added impressive appearance to the downtown business section.

100 years ago: Nov. 24, 1907

Considerable damage was wrought by a flash flood last evening; a rush of water under the ground alongside a foundation wall at the new city hall at Frederick and Independence streets sent the huge stones and a section of the brick wall tumbling into the basement.

Friends of George Patton and Marsh Snider were worried over their disappearance last night, and not until late this morning are the fears finally relieved; the two nimrods went down to Delta yesterday morning to bag a few quail and squirrels; they apparently lost their way in the depths of the swamps and wandered around at night, until they found their way back to town.
