Mostly Cloudy ~ River stage: 33.9 Rising Saturday, November 21, 2009 |
Speak Out 11/21/08Friday, November 21, 2008Salute to veterans The Veterans Day program at Jackson High School was excellent. I am a Korean War veteran, and I want to thank everyone who was involved in the program: American Legion honor guard, superintendent Dr. Ron Anderson, student body president Gabe Eggers and vice president Evan Henry, choir students directed by Elizabeth St. John and Christy Sinn, VFS speech contest winner Bobby Williamson, the tribute to Staff Sgt. Bradley Joe Skelton and taps by Kellie King and Trent Dickerson. This excellent program makes a veteran proud of these young people. Thank you. Cherish the moment I SEE change in the air. Now we have our first black president, maybe everybody can start loving each other like they used to when I was growing up. We have reached a milestone. It does not take a whole lot of effort for someone to care about others. Let's give it a try. Let's cherish this moment. No bonuses REGARDING THE bailout: I don't think the government should be allowed to give CEOs bonuses, because they're the ones who got us in trouble. Slow hearing too HERE'S SOMETHING I've wanted to say for a really long time. In Southeast Missouri, we talk slowly. It doesn't make us worse or better than other cultures. It's just the way we are. Many cultures speak more quickly. We have many fine ethnic restaurants in town run by wonderful people. But when you talk to them, sometimes it's hard for us to understand what they're saying, especially over the phone. If people would try to talk more slowly give us a chance to understand, it would help a lot. Thank you for the wonderful food you give us. We just want to understand you better. Take a cut I THINK it's time for the people who work in the automobile industry to take a reduction in pay and in some of those fringe benefits that are costing the manufacturers an awful lot of money. This could save their job overall. Now's the time when everybody's going to have to give a little. Veterans at Oak Ridge ON VETERANS Day I was privileged to be at the Oak Ridge school for a Veterans Day program. It was excellent. The second- and third-grade girls and boys and the fourth- and fifth-grade girls and boys sang their songs so enthusiastically and beautifully. And the band did a great job. Robert Vaughn gave an excellent talk. The color guard of Cape Girardeau VFW Post 3838 did a great job of posting the colors. And the call to colors and taps by the bugler from Post 3838 were excellent. It was so moving. The children were so well-behaved. Congratulations to the principal and teachers and staff at Oak Ridge. Sanitary stores EVERYONE KNOWS grocery carts are bacteria-laden. In this economy, not many businesses are going to be able to invest in cart-sanitizing machines. The hand wipes provided by a grocery store here in town are fine. That's about the best you're going to get. Paying for education THE SENIOR-citizen issue about paying school taxes is a tough one. They only had children in school for 12 years and have paid school taxes all these years. The senior citizens are hurting for money like everyone else, maybe more so. But they need to think about their grandchildren and their great-grandchildren and what it might mean for their education if money is taken away from education. I guess you have to decide what's more important to you. Cars, not bailouts THIS IS a suggestion to Congress. Instead of spending billions of taxpayers' dollars to bail out the auto industry, why not give lower- to middle-class families new and used cars, depending on their income and only to those who pay income tax? Kicking out God THIS COUNTRY is going down because of the bitterness and hate and division. This is the United States of America. If we don't get our act together, you might as well say Osama bin Laden has accomplished what he said he would do: wreak destruction on this country. Why should God bless this country? The government has turned its back on him. The government kicked him out of the schools. Look what trouble our education system is in. Government kicked God out of the U.S. Capitol, and now we have the most immoral and greedy government I have ever seen. It's time for Christians to stand up and say no. I couldn't care less what the ACLU has to say about anything. It isn't my God. This country has more fear of the ACLU than God, who has a whole lot more power than the ACLU. Just remember this: Every knee will bow and confess that he is God. Bikers' respect ON SUNDAY I went to a local park to walk with some friends. There were some bicyclers riding. Each time we met them we moved to the side of the road. As more bicyclers arrived they took over the whole road. They were not on their bicycles. They were standing in the road drinking beer and socializing. If they want respect as riders, they need to show respect to others. Clintons' experience I FEEL Hillary Clinton is a good choice for secretary of state. Who better than someone with a former president as an adviser? How lucky we would be to get this experience. I think she can be of service and do an excellent job. Hurrah for the Clintons. Play was satire SATIRE: A literary composition holding up to ridicule vice or folly of the time. That's what the infamous play was about. I attended the play "Sister Ignatius" on the first night. A few people left, but most stayed. Everyone seemed to be laughing, including myself. Evidently those who were offended had not been raised in the Catholic Church. My father was born in 1903. He told me that he would have been left-handed if the nuns had not cracked his knuckles so often with a ruler. I attended a Catholic school in a large city in the 1940s. I watched a nun strike a boy repeatedly in the back of his neck with the eraser end of a pencil. I was told by other students that she had been seen in the hallway shaking the same boy with his head banging against the wall. These things happened, and I laughed at the play because it was satire. I believe Wendy Rust had the right to state her opinion, but I don't think the students should have to suffer because of her opinion. Performance rights IF A committee is to determine which student productions will be listed as part of the season-ticket package for performances at the River Campus, does this not censor the director or choreographer to make sure those shows will be acceptable? If it looks like censorship and smells like censorship, I believe it's censorship. What happened to First Amendment rights in public institutions? Conservative view SINCE THE election, I have been hearing and reading comments about how, according to liberals, we are all one country now and how conservatives should reach across the aisle and make nice. This is hypocrisy at its best, coming from people who, for most of the last eight years, did nothing but belittle conservatives at every opportunity and do their best to spread hate and discontent. They managed to call our current president everything but a human being. Apparently we are only one nation when everyone agrees with you. We conservatives always believed we were one nation. Where were you the last eight years? Cart cleanliness ABOUT SHOPPING carts: I have seen so many people put their children in the main basket of the shopping cart rather than the seat provided, especially if they have two or more children. Their dirty shoes, feet and rear ends are where most folks put their groceries. There has to be contamination, and I wish stores would enforce a rule prohibiting children in the main area of the cart. Disgraceful performance I THINK a lot of the people who are commenting about censorship of the arts probably weren't at the performance at the River Campus. It was well-acted but a disgrace. What a horrible selection. I received tickets as a gift from someone who had season tickets and couldn't go. She is horribly embarrassed, and I don't plan to ever go back if this is the kind of subject matter the university thinks is good. It wasn't provocative in any meaningful way. It was just mean, petty and small-minded. Equal bailouts I SEE no reason why the government should not bailout the auto industry. They have been bailing out the farmers for years. Fostering democracy I AM concerned about the monks in Myanmar who have been jailed because of their support of a democratic government for their country. I believe the United States should engage in diplomatic efforts to help promote liberty for the monks and for the people of that region. It is every freedom-loving person's obligation to foster advancement of the principles of the democratic government for these people and for all who awaken to the truth that is the right of self-rule. This is progress. It is ever important. Right to bear arms I WOULD like to respond to the "Heavy weapons" comment, which seems to be more and more prevalent in our society, and that is the notion that we have a right to own firearms for hunting. The Supreme Court ruled this past summer that Americans have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and the constitution doesn't specify just for hunting or even just for self-protection. It just says we have the right to keep and bear arms and that's an individual right. It doesn't mention hunting. We have the right to military-style assault weapons as well. Thanks for purse I WANT to thank whoever found my purse in the parking lot at Perryville Wal-Mart. I don't know who you are. God bless you. Comments |

good morning everyone
regarding shopping carts ...are the products inside a
shopping cart that a shopper has picked off the shelf ,
are they considered personal property even though the
person has not bought them yet ?
Regarding supporting a conservative president and congress the last 8 years, Bush hasn't acted like a conservative, but more of a bully in a candy store, having his way, spending like a child recklessly and ignoring all others opinion. He came in office on a 'bring-em-on' attitude and this hasn't bode well at home or abroad.
cherish the moment
Serendipity
Clintons experience
You call recycled Clintons CHANGE ?
shopping carts
Good grief. You folks who have a germ phobia should take a can of Lysol and spray those carts from one end to the other. And when you get to checkout lane be sure and spray the counter, cash register and the checker, too.
¾ of a funkle for the BABE!!
Good morning, Rick. You always save me. giggle
Good morning everyone,
Lots of silly stuff one could comment on today.
I believe our constitutional "freedom of speech" only applies to our governments.
And would suggest a few printed commenters read the book, Looking out for Number 1. Basic premise, if everyone chose to behave selfishly...collectively everyone's needs would be met and everyone would be happy. (Noting...by behaving selfish, Ringer does not suggest one forcibly interfere in the rights of others. Plus, his concepts focus on personal happiness, which does not prevent a person from also being kind, charitable, or civic-minded.)
I read well-seasoned flavor of consequentialist theories (outcome-based), Kantian theories agent-based) and virtue ethics (character-based) sprinkled within Robert J. Ringer's easy to read thoughts.)
Ugh...Guess I will comment on the frivolous play issue...since it appears to be in the fore-front of so many's minds (gots to wonder about their priorities). First, why didn't YOU learn what the play was about before you attended? A little personal responsibility would be nice. Second, As far as season ticket holders go...tis one of the risk when buying a "bundle/lot/assortment" to save money, that one might not like one or more individual piece of the "bundle/lot/assortment"...in this case, plays.
good morning all
looks like pretty much the same things in SO tday.
Cherish the moment
He's NOT black! Considering that his father was from Kenya and his mother was from Kansas, he technically represents both races. Sounds like another one jumped on the bandwagon.
Slow hearing too
We talk slowly? Maybe you.
Cars, not bailouts
Oh hell no. I'm not paying for someone else's car. Why do a surprising amount of people want something for nothing? I saved and invested my money so I could have my own car; can't these people do the same?
Bikers' respect
They should also have to provide for insurance, licensing, inspections, and property taxes.
Play was satire, Performance rights
This is getting worse than talk about the past election. It is water under the bridge, folks.
Cart cleanliness
If this caller only knew that germs are everywhere--you can clean all you want and they'll come right back. Also don't forget that bugs aid digestion.
Equal bailouts
Maybe because, oh I don't know, farmers provide us with the most basic need--food. If that's the case, then everyone deserves a bailout.
Right to bear arms
Oh cool. This person is their own militia too.
Baldy,
Slept on our Sarbanes Oxley discussion last night...and I concede that the Act HAS spotlighted the RECENT deflated values. Thus, the Act's transparent financial reporting regulations may have aided in the "panic".
Yet, still believe shareholders have the right to know "real/true value" of their holdings/investments. If we have learned anything, tis the Act's regulation is an absolute necessity! For example, IF some of the publically held firms "could" get by withOUT full, good faith, financial reporting to their shareholders...they would do so (and I believe they have in the past).
IMO...No one benefits from hiding or denying accurate/critical financial information from shareholders. Within any managerial structure (business, family etc), IF one continues to deny/to face the facts about their true (financial) state...they are deceiving themselves and others, thus they can NOT fix the problems.
Right to bear arms
"We have the right to military-style assault weapons as well."
Wonder if... this commenter has 400 wives collecting welfare benefits, sleeps with 10 year olds and probably can't wait for the FBI to knock on the door of his compound. :-)~
Dr.Pepper...
"Also don't forget that bugs aid digestion"...i believe
that is true ...who hasn't ate a bug or two when they
were little ?..besides all that , the average person
will eat 8 bugs in their sleep over a lifetime
anyways...have u ever woke up in the middle of a good
sleep for no good reason ? it's cause ya just ate a
spider or waterbug or some other bug creature....
Rick
gee thanks now I will have nightmares about what I am eating when I am asleep!!!!!
semoangel70
the Chinese eat these critters everyday so it can't
hurt ya none ....
...think of it as a source of fiber ..hehe..
LOL well I hate chinesse food and now I know why.
Me'Lange
..i have a rusty old shotgun that's 15 yrs old and
hasn't been fired since Christ wore sandals ...can
i have the right to bare arms too ?
Cherish the moment: and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
No bonuses: and no bailouts.
Take a cut: That should be left to the industry, but it may have to to survive.
Paying for education: Schools should be private. Pay for the services that you use and quit asking for handouts.
Cars, not bailouts: No bailouts, agreed. No cars, no welfare.
Conservative view: Conservatism was killed off by those who claimed to be conservative.
Equal bailouts: Neither should receive bailouts.
Fostering democracy: mob rule. Or stay at home and mind your own business.
Right to bear arms: A natural right with no limitations. Each person has the natural right for self defense. But I should check with the other 400 people sharing this compound.
mel,
I was not trying to insinuate that this Act was a bad thing that caused the currnet economic crisis but merely pointing out the knowledge of the true state of the valuation of some of these corporations contributed to this free fall.
Baldy, We agree.
Rick, You have e-mail. Felt my response would be better kept private...eh...feeling devilish today. hehe
"I believe our constitutional "freedom of speech" only applies to our governments."
Say What??
Have_Wheels_Will_Travel,
Yes Sir/Mam...the protection of freedom of speech/expression held in the federal and state constitutions applies ONLY to governmental restraint. All other entities are free to establish their own policies and procedures.
MeLange
You could have fooled me that there is no freedom of speech in this country just reading the Opinion Column.
I presume that is what the liberals are going to hang their hat on in bringing back the so called fairness doctrine.
Have_Wheels_Will_Travel,
My point was...while collectively we do enjoy freedom of expression most everywhere...many have NO clue as to what the actual protection of "freedom of speech/expression" provided for in our constitutions really and truly means. (Thanks for helping me make my point.)
btw...the "Opinion Column" is sensored. :-)~
MeLange
I'm not quite sure what your point was. But I think when I get time tonight I will read again what the Constitution says. I believe the Constitution is not a living document to be interpeted as suits the current need. I have always been taught that Government was put in place to serve the people not the other way around.
We all have freedom of speech BUT if the speech you make in any way slanders or defames another person then you can be held finacially responsible for any damage that person feels you caused them. Kind of a catch 22 there. You can say whatever you want and no one can stop youfrom doing it but you can be resposible finacially and criminally if it hurts another person.
Certainly the Opinion Column is censored. Doesn't change the fact that anyone can say whatever they want, just means the SE Missouriaan still has the right not to put it in print if they so choose.
wow..reckon i best keep my dumb azz loud mouth shut..
Angel
I agree. Kind of one of those Letting one's mouth overload their.... well you know what I mean.
If you notice though and think about it all the rights we have according to the constitution have since had a law added to it to lessen the actual freedom. Same as the right to bare arms........you can own a gun but without a permit you can not have it on you or in your car.......with every rght we have there is also a law explaining the right or restricting it.
Just me
Sorry but Obama is no different than any other president we have had. They all promise the moon while campaigning and then do what they wat after they get elected. If you want to fault him for it then go back and start with he ones before him.
Just....
Please check out this:

It (if you read) will clear up some of the questions you have.
MeLange
It's a far cry from the government prohitited from abridging free speech to saying it only applies to the government.
OH my just....
Did he say that was the FIRST thing he was going to do????
If he is able to accomplish this within the first 4 years, he met his campaign promise!
He isn't in office and you are constantly picking!!!
Can we say BITTER????
O good lord, that should have been prohibited.
Hey guys/gals...don't shoot the messenger...here is THE quote from my business law I text...Citation: Business Law Today, 7th edition, Miller/Jentz, Publisher Thompson/West...as in WestLaw
"Remember: The First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech applies ONLY to government restricts on speech."
I found the notation intriguing...and was awaiting the appropriate time to share in here.
(Wheels...let me know if you can prove the Westlaw text wrong.)
shortwhitebaldguy and others: If you choose to do some research on the present meltdown, I recommend "The Bailout Reader" at http://mises.org/story/3128 It has several articles on why we have the present much needed correction.
Here http://mises.org/story/1463 from March 2004 warning of the coming correction and its causes by Frank Shostak. We have had warnings on this correction for more than five years.
Oh forgot...page 45.
fyi...NOT a great idea to eat jelly biscuits over the keyboard. Thank goodness for q-tips!
Right to bear arms indeed! assault rifles indeed!
Our founding Fathers you know, the ones who made damn sure that this right be included in its "bill of rights" and VERY high on the list of those original bill of rights I might add. All Americans need this right so that they can defend themselves and their Country.
They new the easiest war to fight and win is against unarmed citizens. They new that arming everyone is the largest and fastest way to raise an army. They new that People defending themselves fight more boldly than those ordered to fight. They new that the people would be the supply base for any militia. They new that when an opposing army is in Country they never know who to attack thus, needing more troops. They new that the militia if using their own weapons, the cost to the Government would be minimal. In short, the second ammendment keeps this Country safe and free. Those of you who would stiffle this right or take from it could be considered non patriotic depending upon how you define that word!
BABE, Would you like the publisher's address? hehe
Greywolf
I personally do not care how many or what kind of gu anyone owns. I grew up in a house with them al around and my brothers still have them. If anyone was interested in them then they would be in our house but no one is. They want to take away that right and while I am sure they have "good" reasons for it their are also many for having them. More and more the "law" is taking away rights for the individuals and guns is one of those.
MeLange
No I cannot prove them wrong... can you prove them correct?
"Remember: The First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech applies ONLY to government restricts on speech."
What am I missing here? What I am reading from the above quote, which is from your post, is that Government may not restrict free speech.
Wolf !..i still have my trusty old shotgun!...
Before the spelling police catch me I should have slowed down a bit and spelled "new" Knew!
..and i should have spelled trusty as rusty...
Mel and others,
Can't someone enjoy firing a weapon including an assault rifle without being labeled a cult-leader? Might I remind you that alot of the people who have defended our freeedoms (past and present) enjoy it, in a time of war or otherwise
MeLange
As an addendum, it appears that others may restrict free speech, for example the SE Missourian, if they don't like what I or anybody else says, they are not Constituionally bound to print it.
semoangel70,
I'm betting we would feel more passionate about gun-control issues...IF it hit close to home? Such as, one of our loved ones killed with their own gun OR a teenager caught in the cross-fire while cruizing Broadway or Chaffee's main street while on a date OR 10 middle school students killed by some child of an idiot parent who sees nothing wrong with owning automatic weapons OR a grandchild getting their head blown off because of a careless grandparent who stored their gun within a child's reach of curiosity.
I still have issues with un-regulated gun ownership. Yes, I understand "guns" don't kill people...people do. Too many irresponsible people out there that do NOT exerecise due care.
Producer,
No, they can not, I am bias (and freely admit it). :-)~
Seriously..."military-style assault weapons", "assault rifle"... ~shakes head~
Freedom of Speech test: Men with wives and or girlfriends. Walk up to them and call them a c*nt (sorry ladies it is the most offense word for a woman I could come up with) and see what your 'freedom' gets you. There are consequences to free speech.
Second Amendment was enacted/written/reasoned for because the British Army declaired that civilians could not own guns. Beyond the basic right to defend ones family, this infringed on the ability of the family to provide food. ie hunting. So though I may not own a gun, it is unlawful to tell anyone else they can not own one. And though I may not see a need for an assault rifle to kill bambi, I'm not the one that is going to have to search the meat for bullets that were not a thru and thru. (such as being careful with buckshot on the wild turkey and geese a friend has provided on occassion.)
Melange as always you make a valid point concerning guns. Keep in mind that the earliest man thousands of years ago made weapons even before or at least the same time he made shelter. Since then weapons have been used for hunting and protection and even for the wrong purposes. The world is a very dangerous place and I believe unless something is done soon the Unites States of America by the year 2025 will no longer be the world dominate power as we have enjoyed in our lifetime. The most important thing we need to do now is to be sure we are ready to deal with any enemy.
The best way to do this is to consider what I wrote.
Yes, where their are weapons there will be danger. A
weapon in the criminal hand is dangerous this is why I like to even the odds! That being said I respect your concerns and your opinion although I find myself on a different page than you on this subject.
Mel,
Have you ever fired one? I completely agree with your last post, safety is of the utmost importance. My father went to great lengths to assure that all necessary precautions were taken and passed along to me. All guns were locked in a safe with the ammo locked in another safe. I wont even begin to go into the all precautions utilized at the firing range. When these are exercised it is quite fun
MeLange
You would do well not to condecend to folks because you read something in your Business Law book. Some do not appreciate being taught Constitutional law by you.
If what you are trying to say is that no one has absolute free speech rights, then you are correct. Business establishments, churches, schools etc can and do set limits on what you can say. What is new and novel about what you discovered? The Constitution states that government shall make no laws abridging free speech.
Have_Wheels_Will_Travel,
Ah geez Wheels...I think you did miss the point. Point was...ONLY, repeating again...ONLY our government is restricted by the 1st Amendment. NOT, repeating NOT other entities (such as private businesses, public schools, universities, organizations etc). Hope you got it now, because I've gotten bored with the topic. hehe Only reason I pointed it out, truly feel most feel "freedom of speech" is an ultimate right...for example...how many times have we read a poster protest/demand "freedom of speech" when the seMissourian has removed an (offensive) comment? Plus, have read about cases in public schools, such as not being able to wear a specific t-shirt...parents/students protesting freedom of expression. Tis NOT a wide-sweeping "right" as most think. That was my point.
Oh...feel no need to prove Westlaw right (or wrong)...I trust their interpretation of the law, as do most attorneys. Judges cite their secondary sources in decisions, as well as case law. Good enough for me.
Although I don't have one, assault weapons are needed to defend the right to have guns or rifles to hunt with and to defend one's person. I have a gun/rifle or two around and plan on keeping them.
Wheels...Bingo! This newspaper can choose what to print in SO or in editorials but the government cannot make laws to abridge that freedom of speech.
The Constitution states that government shall make no laws abridging free speech.

So does that make the law against yelling fire in a theatre unconstitutional?? (smartazzness at work here)
Babe
Well said. The Supreme Court has made decisions concerning free speech where it can be hurtful to others. Is this legislating from the bench, or are they reading more than one little section in making their decisions? We would hope that they would look at a host of things when coming down with a decision affecting our Constitution. Certainly there can be consequences when running your mouth. In my case fellow classmates in the first grade taught me the limitations on my right to free speech!
BABE,
Excuse me dear, this forum is used to SHARE ideas and information. IF YOU do not appreciate the shared information, so be it. Obviously, YOU did not understand the "concept" before, based on your previous comments. Thus, one would think the intriguing clarification would be welcome. ~shrugs~
Honestly, I was under the same mis-conception. That is WHY I found it intriguing (and thought it would lead to interesting discussion, which it did.)
MeLange
There you go again. What arrogance to assume that this was a new concept to me. Honey, I understood it long before you found it in a Business Law book.
Just_Me_and_My_Opinion...touché ~wink~
I'm no lawyer, my opinion: The First Ten Amendments to the the Constitution will not be abridged by the Federal Government. This Bill of Rights was added upon demand from the wrongly named Anti-Federalists (Richard Henry Lee, Patrick Henry, The Farmer, and others) and by some state legislators.
The Federal Government claimed no power over speech or arms as well over the other Amendments. Until the 14th Amendment the Federal Government was to have no power over state laws.
Babe, Sure you did...

"I believe our constitutional "freedom of speech" only applies to our governments."
The above posted by you at 7:04am.
Does this not say that "freedom of speech" only applies to our governments. If you mean to restrict or not to restrict the right of free speech applies to our government, you might want to say so. Mind reading was not a subject where I went to school.
Just...
Your "quote" was taken from an edited interview...The person who posted the audio is using manipulative editing to paint Obama as a radical. The oh-so-firey suggestion is that Obama is lamenting the Warren Court's lack of radicalism in the area of economic redistribution...only portions of the audio are posted.
It is important to read, listen to what a person says in context....We have had this discussion before with Biblical references.
Now....what specifically are you asking my opinion on, his statement, my interpretation of said statement or my impression of said statement. Which Statement?
Pups, you asked "So does that make the law against yelling fire in a theatre unconstitutional??"
It is Unconstitutional.
Goodness gracious, You two sure can beat a dead dog! I'm done. I found the concept intriguing, worth sharing (and admitted that I too had a mis-conception)...
You both were WRONG (just as I was), I proved it to be fact...now you are treading water to save your own face. I'm moving on. :-)~
Question:
Was Walt Disney anti gun/hunting when he made the hunter the villian in Bambi? Did he secretly want to ban guns/hunting by making millions of children cry when Bambi's Mother became a trophy on the hunters wall?
Just a thought running through my head this am.....
Pups: I should have said that the law is unconstitutional if enforced by the Federal Government. State constitutions may enforce the law.
Yelling Fire in a crowded theater is a violation of private property rights and thus be tried on those grounds.
MeLange
This is what you said in your post of 7:04.
"I believe our constitutional "freedom of speech" only applies to our governments."
Salute to Veterans...Nice to see that.
Cherish the Moment...OK! Let's DO give it a try. a 1, and a 2, and (sing all together now) cherish is the word I use to descrrriiiibe....
No Bonuses...I agree the CEO's should take less, but I don't think it's the government giving the bonuses.
Slow Hearing...patronizing at it's best. Well done.
Take a Cut...really? Well, I think pro athletes should take a cut, too. And for sure lawyers, and doctors, and then there's those CEO's, and...
Vets at Oak Ridge...Nice to see that, too.
Sanitary Stores...When is the last time you cleaned the steering wheel on your car? Can you imagine all the germs? Get a grip on reality.
Cars, not Bailouts...Congratulations!! You get the prize for dumb comment of the year.
Kicking Out God...You might try more prayer.
Biker's Respect...You're just angry because they didn't offer you a beer. Walk on.
Cinton's Experience...Oh yeah, I just bet you old Bill would like to give HER some good advice...
Play was Satire and Performance Rights...agreed. But, Rust thinks because she cut a check for a couple mil that gives her the right to step in whenever she likes. I doubt it will happen again.
Cart Cleanliness...oh, please. Get over yourself.
Just,

Those are TORTS my dear! And NO not being "pompus", just sharing what I thought was interesting information! How does sharing information from a "textbook" differ than sharing information from a link, newspaper, other book, memory etc?
Excuse me for trying to share a comment of substance with you flipping idiots!
MeLange
"I believe our constitutional "freedom of speech" only applies to our governments."
Your conceit filters through even if you cannot articulate what you are thinking.
Just,
"Excuse me for trying to share a comment of substance with you flipping idiots!"...now THAT is being pompus. :-)~
And someone, anyone...let me know where the reference citation pompus line is? I'm so confussed now, is it a magazine article? newspaper? purchased book? library book? textbook? freeper link? wilkie? encarta?
Me thinks, some just do NOT like to be (caught) wrong
So being correct = conceit. Hum...thanks didn't know that.
MeLange
It's not what you said as much as your arrogant attitude. YOU discovered a concept in your course book and proceeded to tell us all that we didn't understand the Constitution. As my grandma used to say "she sure thinks a lot of herself".

Well, at least MeLange is off Jung now. Wonder what her next course is so that we will be prepared for her 'pearls of wisdom'.
Babe
I have a headache!!
Hilleco,
Rats!! You posted your clairification before I could post another smartazz comment. j/k I was curious though how it could be illegal still, but be unconstitutional. Would have thought someone would have challenged it in court. Granted, I'm not the brave soul to try it and see if I wasn't convicted of a crime.
Oh, in this particular instance does State Law supercede Federal law? Meaning if it is unlawful State wise, but is unconstitutional Federally. Or am I getting myself confused here??? lol
Melange,
Hang in there, there are those of us who think your posts are intruguing and informational.
My hat is off to you, you are the kind of student most teachers would love to have in a class, but rarely get. You read the text, supplemental materials and you like to apply the new knowledge to your experiences and share it with those around you. I don't think that is condascending, unfortunately, there are those who think it is because of some degree of jealousy on our part.
I've only been reading SO comments for about a year, maybe more, and I was aware of your lupus, as well as semoangel's. The person who says he/she didn't know about it only considers his/herself IMO in most instances (it's all about me :=)~ I hated to see you put yourself out there for s/him to roast when you divulged you had lupus.
Take care and keep educating yourself and us!
Me'Lange
Personally I do not like having guns around kids, that is why I am glad my husband is not a hunter but most of the family is and their kids are around them on a daily basis as I was as a kid. The key is to teach the right and wrong way to use a gun, show and teach safety. If an adult is responsible and can do that then they deserve the gun. Banning the gun isn't the only solution expecting people to accept the responsibilty is another. Sure lots of kids get killed innocently by a gun and if mine were one of them I am sur I would feel different to a degree but as a parent I also know that ANYTHING can happen to change the life of a child forever and sheltering them fro the world may protect them at this time but they will have no clue as to what the real world is like. People driving cars kill innocent people every day and yet we all own one.
Pups, I am not at all sure what Walt's intentions or thoughts were when he or whoever wrote Bambi and not sure if we ever will. However, knowing he was a huge "Family MAN" I am pretty sure he is rolling in his grave knowing that his Disney
World has what is known as "GAY WEEK" in June. Bet that comment might stir some manure!
Oops, spelling police don't respond:...."condescending" not condascending!
Pups
I remember when was a kid and my dad came home from deer hunting with a deer. I wouldn't speak to him for a week because he killed Bambi's daddy and that was so mean.
I am sure Walt Disney gave a lot of kids trauma with tht movie!
Me'Lange
Youknow I have to argue with you but as some have said I do respect your opinion and the way I see it get the benefit of the class without having to do all the work!!!!
gofigure
just blame it on the keyboard I do!!!
Re: Gun Control
Can someone answer whether the registering of firearms is of usefulness to law enforcement in the ability to track firearms? If it is is this a valid enough reason to require registration of fire arms? Or is this too considered a restriction?
Opinion dude may opine at any time though if red is out there I am sure he has some sense on this.
gofigure,
Ahhh, thanks for the kind words! I truly am a "teacher" at heart, get so dang excited when I learn something new...just love to share it with others (like the forum buddies). Plus, the discussions help open my perspective on the topics.
Too bad, some ...don't appreciate opening their (bitter little) worlds up to new and interesting conversations. I for one, find the liberal/conservative stuff gets old fast.
Babe,
Statistics and Business Law II :-)~ Oh...Jung (nor Kant) will venture far from my consciousness. hehe
PUPS; I believe that the Constitution is a dead horse. Neither the Left nor the Right were willing to defend it from all aggressors, foreign or domestic. To use any of the Bill of Rights to defend speech, bearing of arms, etc. etc. just serves no purpose. The Bill of Rights does not give rights it was included in the Constitution to defend natural rights. To argue the First Amendment on speech or the Second on the right to bear arms is a waste of energy. Both should be argued as natural rights.
GREYWOLF,
I think Walt is still frozen somewhere in Arizona next to Ted Williams head. Maybe we can ask him someday after all. However being a good capitalist perhaps Walt would know that gay peoples money is green too.
shortwhitebaldguy
my brother is a police officer and he even has mixed feelings with the registering of firearms. If he buys a gun and registers it and then sells it to a buddy or even loans it out then if a crime is committed with that gun guess who they go looking for. On the other side the registering of guns does help solve crimes. I do not think with that there would be an asy answer for most as again it has advantages and disadvantags.
Grey,
That be a whole different can of worms. Previous discussions in this area has shown our disagreement on that particular issue. But your a good guy anyway. (just a raz btw)
On a personal note, glad to hear Mrs Wolf is doing so much better!!!!!
semo,
Hehe...I don't mind a good debate. And honestly, was stirring the pot with the gun-issues. I don't have strong convictions either way, but surely would IF it affected my family personally.
Thanks for your kind words too...I don't expect my friends to agree with me, but it is nice when you have earned their respect.
Are you really sure you do not want to share in the study workload? hehe
Me'Lange
Positive I did my time in school and even in college I was not as eager as you are. Even when it comes to looking up info now I admit I do not do nearly as much as I should.
Semo,
If I haven't said it yet, glad your back to posting.
I'm guessing those in the area that hunt rabbit also had to contend with 'killing Thumper' with their kids. Well maybe not around here cause I still think some believe if you haven't shot something by the time you are three there is something wrong with you. j/k
Well time for me to leave the fun for a bit. Everyone have a great day!!
Hilleco,
Kind of lost me on that one. I'll have to re-read it later. Sometimes things don't sink in the first time I read them.
Me'Lange, gofigure said it well and I do enjoy what you bring to SO.
There are a few here who love to "get after" others for their posts and that's why I get on their tails now. I grew tired of their ways and decided to give them a taste of their own medicine. By their responses, I'm finding they don't like it one bit either. LOL
Hilleco,
Aristotle promoted the natural law tradition-- universal moral and ethical principles with regard to basic human rights and the law.
Not sure I'm sold either--the confederal or federal form of government truly encompassed "the natural school of law"...even way back in the 18th century? Thus, have always wondered why some would expect it to now?
"she sure thinks a lot of herself".

Now isn't that the pot calling the kettle black.....laughing!!!!
Suelyn, Thank you.
Had to laugh - Look what one of them spent time on yesterday...I'd say I was having an impact for someone to go to all this trouble. The guy/gal has a thing about food - probably has a weight problem and is trying to cover up. I have no fact to back that up, just my opinion. Almost forgot, he/she has a thing about crayons too. I don't know what that means...but I'm sure there will be a post to explain it all - perhaps another poem? Maybe this one will be a special one for Me'Lange.
OK, just one last pick ...
To the tune of ‘Run Around Sue’:
Here's her story, and its sad but true
It's about a SO poster that I once knew
Said she was easy which made lunch hard to keep down
Hated pesky facts, said they made her frown
Ah, should have known it from her posting prose
This girl will just mad because Denny’s closed
Now listen people what I'm telling you
A-keep away from-a Runaround Sue-lynn
I miss her posts and the KFC crumbs on her face
Her intellect like an empty parking space
So if you feel sad for her like I do
A-keep away from-a Runaround Sue-lynn
Ah, she likes to travel around
Her avatar should be a circus clown
Now people let me put you wise
Suelynn types while she eats curly fries
Here's the moral of the story from the guy who knows
I called her a hypocrite, now her hatred grows
Ask any forum poster that she ever knew, they'll say
Keep away from-a Runaround Sue-lynn
Ah, hey, hey, a dittle dittle, hey, hey …. Ah, Suelynn made my day … Ah, hey, hey

JMAMO
Oh that was a song - crap - sorry. I just kinda skipped through it.
JMAMO:
OCD
You get stuck on the same thing.
Move on!
Suelynn's alleged weight problem, which you cannot prove, has nothing to do with her posts. Most could care less if she is slim and trim or huge and hefty. Why do you stoop down so low to bring it up all the time? You and your playmate Bob?
OCD it is, then?
Buh-bye, everyone have a great week-end!
Me'Lange: I am of the opinion that any attack by government on natural rights, some addressed by the Bill of Rights, is an attack on its people, its citizens. I wonder how long a republic can endure when a government's enemy is the people. An attack by government on free speech, guns, other property, the people to be secure in their persons, a speedy trial represented by counsel, and etc. is an attack on its people. This must not be condoned by ideologists of any party for any reason. These attacks have been not only condoned but encouraged by both the Left and the Right.
Wait a minute gofigure, remember JMAMO just deals in fact...so it must be true. He cited his source, SilentBob. I mean, it's "just" gotta be true. I bet all his info is "just" as reliable. "Just" MY opinion and not based on any fact what-so-ever. LOL
BTW - I'm typing this as I sit at the buffet. I wonder if SilentBob and JMAMO are stalking me....stay tuned for their updates.
Just....
As far as the constitution guaranteeing what the government cannot do.....
Look at the Bill of Rights....
I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion
Is this saying what the Gov't cannot do????
Theorist
Yes
Just....
Got to go....but I finally figured out who your mentor is....at least who you seem to be following....it is Cal Thomas, conservative American syndicated columnist.
Maybe you should strike out on your own.....laughing....strike out....get it?
Obviously....both....but basically, first what it cannot!
Just Me
The Federal Constitution is a negative document in some ways. What is not mentioned is not their concern, but the states.
JustMe alert - I'm now having a shake from Steak & Shake and a bucket of chicken from KFC. Next stop that yummy burger place. Then I'm off to shop for stretch pants and some muumuus at Wal-mart. Stayed tuned for further alerts....
PS - I might pick up some crayons and a tablet for my "friend".
Did you see his UPDATE.
OMG - he loves me!!!!!! Kisses!!!!
Gotta go sweetie - back to you later love!
Right to bear arms: "We have the right to military-style assault weapons as well."
Of course you do, a right denied still remains a right. A right denied is a war upon that right by a ruler, which is of course is a war upon the people.

Just,
You are just ticked off cause I spanked you with a TORT earlier. Now, leave me out of your tic/tat crap! Or Snookum's will get after you. :-)~
Just Me
I said what the Federal Constitution does not mention is left to the states. Can you refute my statement?
A little email birdie delivered a link to this Capaha Arrow article. Topic: Cape County commission (election results)
{b]Heads-up seMissourian...Cherish West might be a great reporter prospect. IMO This article was very well written and offered a balanced point of view of facts.
http://www.capahaarrow.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticle&uStory_id=3068920a-0e29-4efd-9f51-965ac30e2689
GREYWOLF, there was a report recently predicting what you wrote ... " ... unless something is done soon the Unites States of America by the year 2025 will no longer be the world dominate power as we have enjoyed in our lifetime." The analysis by the National Intelligence Council suggested that US dominance will decline, with China's influence gaining power. Mel ... I used to do all of a statistics-class student's typing. We had some great conversations, in which he described to me the many, easy ways that 'statistics' can be skewed in order to obtain the results the statisticians prefer--which is why ever since then I view most 'statistics' with a somewhat skeptical attitude. Must point out, though, that he was an 'older' student (versus a younger one who had not matured to the point of 'thinking' rather than just following the given agenda, if you know what I mean). So it will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the subject when you're taking the class.
Wow! An on-line love affair between suelynn and Just_Me. Kind of warms the heart, doesn't it? Thanks for the laughs, you two--really!
Just Me
Both. The Constitution states quite nicely what is in the parameters of federal responsibility and what is not.
Just_Me_and_My_Opinion, I'm NOT playing your game.
Your words..."They have applied the aforementioned Constitutional rights to PRIVATE malice and slander decisions."
Slander, in the law of torts, oral defamation or use of the spoken word to injure another's reputation, as distinguished from libel or written defamation. (encarta)
Again with the "health" issue slams...IMO...you must be one sorry son-of-a-gun, as Grandpa would put it...eh...no, Grandpa would have used more colorful language, but you can imagine what Grandpa and I would think. :-)~
Just_Me
Don't you think perhaps that the stock market figures after this year's election (well, heck, probably all of them) might be based upon other criteria, like the current financial crises? Sort of an example of what I posted about statistics?
JMAMO,
STOP IT, your making me hungry!
Frankly I see Theorist as a well educated and normal
woman perhaps in her mid to late 30s and weighing in at no more than 130-35. But then I am not even sure she is a she! I think she may be only because like most women, she knows a bit more than me. As for Melange I know she is a good looker and Very intelligent and kinda funny too. I don't always agree with either but would certainly join them anytime I can at any local buffet.
Greywolf,
That was so sweet! Thank you.
OMG, and now GREYWOLF is suggesting a buffet menage a trois with Theorist and Mel'Lange? Nothing like love to brighten up SO conversations. This is so wonderful! J/K, y'all know that, right? Thinking it's time for me to do something more productive and less ... um ... mentally-challenging, like maybe doing some laundry or frying a chicken?
Oh Melange, no need to thank me everything I said was true. However, your welcome.
Mea Culpa, Just_Me ... I just skipped right past your your disclaimer without registering it. Even though I often disagree with some of your comments/opinions, should have known you would be consciencious enough to do that. ~blush~ And yes, the 'stats' were all interesting.
GurusMom: I never could figure out which person in his avatar was Just_Me. It makes it difficult to respond to him.
Gurusmom, your proof positive women are smarter than me. Until a few minutes ago I had no idea how to spell that 3 way French thing people sometimes are lucky enough to be a part of!!...menage a trois..is that
right?..lol Remember now its happy Friday!
Just Me
I'm wondering if you typed that slow enough. I agree with you. But I was told I was wrong earlier today and she is correct. So you must be wrong also if you agree with me. Sorry to break it to you this way.
Well...I see the whiners are out in full force today. Some folks just don't have anything better to do with their time.
Gobbles,
Can you add anything to the missery or would you rather whine about the whiners? Surely you can add something positive.
Hilleco, that was a good one! Me thinks maybe the Preacher.
1 day of Obama as President-elect = 486.01 point drop
2 days of Obama as President-elect = 929.49 point drop
7 days of Obama as President-elect = 1342.62 point drop
14 days of Obama as President-elect = 1628 point drop
Ohh this is comical. Certainly a typical Repubo-whiner response. Yes...point fingers at the incoming president for the failure of the current lame duck in office. The same one trying to put harsher restrictions on the family medical leave act.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/20081121/pl_ynews/ynews_pl158
Yes, it's true. What's left of the republican party appears to be hell bent on destroying everything left in sight until their final days.
Needless to say, we all know the pucker factor is in effect and the "acting out" was going to be a consequence of the election results. In the mean time, it looks as though I better start stocking up on cheese, I'll be needing it for all the "whining" on January 20th. *giggle*
Just_Me_and_My_Opinion,
Sounds like you have some anger and frustration issues buddy. Aren't you a survivor? Why all the whining? Chin-up and act like a big boy now. Remember, the world's smartest woman, "Sarah Palin", will be back to rescue you in 2012. *snicker*
Good news on the stock market today. Tim Geithner, Head of the New York FED was picketed today by Obama for Treasury Secretary. The market acted favorably to the news.
Too funny, Hilleco ... Every time I see Just_Me's avatar (sorry, Just), it's tempting to put up different ones myself which also sort of 'send a message' ... but then, how would Herr ever find my comments without what he calls the 'happy balloons?'
You're welcome, Grey. Never was involved in a menage a trois myself either ... Heck, couldn't have admitted it even if I had been. Still, the phrase itself just has a neat 'ring' to it. The adult French course I took many years ago didn't much stick with me (plus was cancelled fairly early on due to lack of enrollment), except for a few phrases, and basics on how to pronounce the words, etc. However ... I DO consider you to be a 'smart' person. Along, of course, with ... well, actually, everyone on this SO 'bog.'
Gotta love whiners whining about whining ... or opinion-posters opining about opinion-posters. ~wink~
One more ... on Gobbles post: Absolutely merely my opinion ... Presidents should not have the power to make last-minute "midnight rules" when they are leaving office, nor should they have the power to pardon criminals as they leave (or at any other time, actually). What is the history on these things, anyway ... Like, how was this allowed?
Whining about the whiners? Oh no, quite the opposite. I'm reveling over their dismay. Frankly, I've been on a personal high since November 4th.
uh-ho...now this is tragic news.
http://tv.yahoo.com/blog/are-daytime-soaps-doomed--43
looks like it has been an interesting afternoon.
Guru,
Yes ... I have an afinity for chicken.

AND lucky for me - fat chicks!!!! Kisses JMAMO!!!
Hey, quit flirting with Me'Lange, you're making me jealous.
PS I bought you the tablet and crayons.
suelyn
paint by numbers probably would have been more suitable!
Sorry couldn't resist
suelynn,
Just me... is all yours!
Semo,
I was thinking tinker toys were a better match or perhaps, a tickle me Elmo? Crayons and paint brushes might be dangerous for the pour lad (without proper supervision). ~giggle~
Me'Lange
you are right but not the tinker toys he could put an eye out with those as well. If not a tickle me elmo then maybe a nice baby doll.
Sounds like Christmas is coming early for someone.*giggle*
*carefully stepping in room*
Melange, Semo and Suelyn:
Step meet stoop.
*ducking and running for life*
Me'Lange, you don't think he'd be a "catch"? LOL He seems so taken with me and my bod. Maybe he needs a Barbie doll.
or better yet a Kewpie doll. I forgot about that fat chick thing of his.
Big 3 auto GM cuts back production today for lack of
money they say ...i wonder if this means lay-offs ,
which ain't nothing new for auto workers , or a sad
excuse to try and get bailout money ...
Pups,
You'd better duck...because you know... I'm a good aim...and you are within tossing distance! (Would you prefer the house shoe or pillow?) hehe
Seriously, after the "stuff" the "step" tosses out there, he deserves everything the "stoops" can dish out. LOL
Suelyn,
Nah...not my type of catch (I'd be a tossing him back for a big-boy fish). While, I do likes "gruffy-ness" in my men, I likes a big heart hiding under the cute kind of "gruffy-ness"...like tv's...Dr. House ;-)
Melange,
Mother always grabbed what ever was closest....hair brush, hotwheels track, or slipper...but never a pillow. Pillows don't have the same whack power. So your call. lol
Me'Lange - to quote a famous line, "Thanks but no thanks". I would never be with a guy like Just (thinks he is always right and seems angry - IMO - no facts to back that up) and I pity anyone that is. I agree on Dr. House though...at least he knows he has issues.
but the gov'ment makes the big 3 wait another month
for an anwser on the bailout ...hehe..
a little political black mail maybe ?
Movie quote...anyone?
Why was I not made of stone like thee? 1930's (And no cheating Pups...)
performance rights,
I would like to comment on one item in SO today. Even an institute of higher learning is is subject to the will of people. I think the University acted appropriately. It is not censorship it is common sense. Maybe in New York City or in Berkley CA that type of play is not going to get a reaction but this is middle America. People start canceling their season tickets who will the student perform for? Ask Don Imus if he was censored or if he got axed because of sponsors pulling ads.
shortwhitebaldguy
they did Imus wrong ...
rick,
Imus was not done wrong. It was simply economics. Could the station have weathered the fire storm? Perhaps as Imus certainly has made them money. However in this world it is and always has been What have you done for me lately?
..the station was paying Imus big bucks to be
controversial , which he was doing , and when he
needed backing for all the big bucks he was bringing
in , they walked away and left him on his own ..
Imus was/is NO one's fool...he knew (or should have known) how the game is played.
rick,
You are absolutely correct. He pushed it too far in this current climate. I am not suggesting that his station did him right but they did what they did because of money. There is no loyalty like money. He may have brought lots of listeners but I bet those execs crunched some numbers as well. While I may not agree with exactly how it fell out it shows the power of a group of people to exercises their voice to promote change.
bring back Imus is all i'm suggesting...
reckon i miss the gruffy old fool...
Melange,
Hunchback of Notre Dame, Charles Laughtin, Quasimoto(sp)
I promise I didn't cheat.
Pups , u peaked at the answer..
Rick, I agree!! Pups cheated!! Aggie
Pups
Don't worry you do not have to duck, I only throw tings when I get upset this was more entertainment than upsetting. Sorry todmt but I am like your mother when i get mad whatever is I reach I throw. Gee now I guess I know where my son gets his temper and I prefered blaming his father for that one.
Pups, You are good! I likes the black and white oldies!
Rick and Aggie,
I swear on my Mother's grave I didn't look it up. I've seen the movie like 10 times.
Here's an easy one...
"I think it's just elegant to have an imagination. I just have no imagination at all. I have lots of other things, but I have no imagination." 1955
Semo,
I can honestly say that I get my temper from my Mother. Kind of hard to raise, but once there watch out. Not sure where I get my vendictiveness from, but have been told I'm down right evil with it. lol
I like watching the AMC channel every once and awhile. Aggie
Melange, sounds like some Monroe movie? Yes? Aggie
Melange,
Got me on this one, care to give a hint?
Pups...
Hum...I learned something new about you. hehe
btw...I just emailed you an updated movie list. Don't know if you can access it at work, but thought I'd give you a heads-up so you can check it out in the morning from home.
Aggie...Nice to see you posting. Hope all is well in TX. Sorry gots to head to bed now...been a very long day.
I'm sure Pups will come up with the last movie quote's answer quickly.
Hint: blonde bomb-shell in white dress
...dress over her head...(and the shooting of this segment of the film, led to the demise of her then-current marriage)
Aggie is right then. Was it The Seven Year Itch?
Hint: a very long bout of poison ivy...LOL night...hehe (yeah...I'm cracking myself up now.)
Doris Day?
Rick...Aggie was right...tis a Marilyn Monroe flick, the one that made her famous and cost her De-ma-si-o(? spelling)...baseball record dude
...(and thanks for saving my "funkle")
Yep...You are correct! Have a great night all!
This would definatley increase the Male viewership of the Olympics.....

Willy Makit,
I understand your point from last night on SS (I just saw it). But I lost almost a quarter of my retirement as of the last quarterly report because of the crash in the market recently. But I didn't lose any of my SS. Well at least in theory.
