12 members of Millersville Rural Fire District reinstated

Thursday, November 20, 2008

All 12 members of the Millersville Rural Fire District that resigned at a Monday board meeting have been reinstated, said fire board member Jim Roche.

The board held an emergency board meeting Wednesday night to discuss reorganization of the 22-member district, sliced in half by the resignations.

Though not all 12 members that resigned on Monday were present at the emergency meeting, Roche said they are all welcome to return to the department.

"If they’re willing to come back we’re willing to take them back," Roche said.

Chief Jerry Aufdenburg said he made the decision to resign after a series of disagreements between members of the district and a maintence officer who had overspent his budget.

Roche said he spoke with the officer and asked him to throttle back on the spending.

"It’s getting toward the end of the year and we like to have a cushion in the budget," Roche said.

In the wake of Wednesday’s discussions, Roche said he feels confident the disagreements have been ironed out.

"I think we’ve pretty well got our problem solved," he said.

Don't know if I would call it solved, but it's a start. Now how about sanctions against the fireman who started all of this by not getting proper authorization from the board on spending?? Or waiting for the Fire Cheif to be out of town to do something he was told not to by the Fire Cheif? Maybe he should step down as an officer and just be a fireman, since isn't that why he is there?

Excuse me, but when I was in the Fire Service, The Chief of the Department was the swole and top person to make decisions of a financial nature related to the fire board. Most departments, the Chief has a set spending limit that he is allowed to use in an emergency, for equipment replacement, etc., but all other expenses have to be approved by the Chief, no matter what your title is. In this case, I would say in observation only, that the Chief of the Dpartment should repremand the so called financial officer, if yes that includes requesting resignation, and remind other members of the department that he is the only one who can authorized payment of funds, and who goes in front of the board with financial matters.
