Kelly adds another district title

Sunday, October 10, 2004

The Kelly softball team won its third straight Class 2 District 1 title Saturday while handing Valley Park its first loss in a 4-1 decision at Perryville St. Vincent.

The Hawks (20-6) have now won 18 district titles in 19 years. Kelly will play in the sectional round Wednesday at Elsberry against Elsberry, which beat Wright City 7-4 in the District 2 final.

For Kelly coach Rhonda Ratledge, who also played at Kelly, district titles are becoming commonplace.

"I've pretty much seen a lot of these at Kelly," she said.

Kelly's dominant pitching was on display once again Saturday, with Whitney Beggs taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Beggs allowed only one hit, a triple, while striking out 13.

"She did an excellent job," Ratledge said.

Mindy Robert provided the offensive fireworks. Robert had a two-RBI triple in the first, and added a sacrifice fly in the third. Brittany Ponder delivered the other RBI. Beggs added two hits.

"It felt good to get this one over with," Ratledge said.
