Newell Rubbermaid to reduce work force by 35 jobs

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Newell Rubbermaid officials announced Monday the elimination of 35 positions at the company's Jackson manufacturing facility, which produces wire shelving and wood storage furnishings.

Company spokeswoman Connie Bryant cited a decline in new home construction as a significant factor in the decision.

"This was a difficult decision that came only after carefully reviewing our production needs in light of the changed business climate for the goods manufactured there," Bryant said. "Our employees are our first priority, and we understand the impact this will have on affected employees and their families."

Laid-off employees will receive their regular pay through Dec. 5. After that date, the company will provide supplemental unemployment pay based on years of service to make up the difference between unemployment insurance and current wages.

All employees will receive a minimum of four weeks of supplemental unemployment pay, Bryant said.

The company also is providing transition services, including assistance with resume preparation, job interview skills and networking opportunities with local employers for potential open positions. Bryant said the company is working with state and federal officials to access traditional benefits, including continuing education and other programs.

The news comes just three months after the company had announced it would be adding 40 jobs at the plant.

The layoffs are not the first for the company.

In August 2004, 120 employees lost their jobs at the plant. And in 2005, company officials announced it was laying off between 40 and 60 workers.

After Dec. 5, the plant will employee more than 300 workers.

It is truly sad that 35 Jobs are being lost in Jackson. I wonder how many of those losing their jobs voted for Jo Ann Emerson this past election day?

I would be willing to bet that if not all of these workers voted for Jo Ann Emerson, most likely that 33 of them did.

Jo Ann Emerson has done more to kill jobs in southern Missouri by voting for a job killing trade legislation and benefits for Communist China. She voted twice for the bailout of Wall Street bankers who got too greedy and got themselves into a jam that workers at Newell Rubbermaid will be forced by Emerson to pony up some of their pay to bailout the bankers.

It is sad when someone loses their job, but it is even sadder still to find out that they vote the party and do little to inform themselves of the issues that affect their future. Since they voted for Emerson, they are partially responsible for their loss jobs, because they continued to vote for a Congresswoman, Jo Ann Emerson who has been a job killer for southern Missouri. They refused to listen to the facts, to reason, and they voted as they always have, for Emerson, without checking her voting history out to see that she is a corporate socialist.

Where will 35 Missourians find jobs? It will not be easy, because the financial policies followed by the Bush government and endorsed by Jo Ann Emerson has caused hundreds of thousands of jobs to killed off in this year alone.

You all voted for Emerson, you got Emerson elected, so you have no one to blame but yourselves. This is exactly what people tried to tell you, but you wouldn't listen to us. We are sorry for your hardship, but you didn't listen, so who is at fault for your lost jobs?

Its called business decisions - happens every day. If you aren't selling stuff, you don't need as many people to make stuff. Housing is down - which is a big market for the shelving they make. Its not a conspiracy theory.

It is typical of this company to get rid of the higher paid employees and replace them with lower paid workforce type people. Anything to save them a penny.
