Profanity, immorality in theaterWednesday, November 5, 2008To the editor: The River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University is a treasure that has the promise of great community cultural advantage. That's why I was so disappointed in the Oct. 29 production of "Sister Mary Ignatius." The young actors put everything they had into the production, but the subject matter was insulting at best and sacrilegious at worst. Had the central figure of any other religion been treated as was Jesus Christ in the "skit" of his birth and resurrection, I can only imagine the protests forthcoming. I wish I had walked out mid-performance, as did a few courageous patrons. If modern theater requires profanity and immorality as in last year's "Coyote Ugly" and ridicule of Christianity as in this year's offering, I'll not be returning. JOHN STEHR, Cape Girardeau |
