News of Palin's Cape Girardeau appearance causes run on tickets

Jackie Griffith was first in line on Monday at Cape Girardeau County Republican headquarters for tickets to see Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Thursday at the Show Me Center.

Huddled against the office door to stay out of the chilly winds blowing along Kingshighway, Grifith said shortly before 3 p.m. that she had been standing in line since 1:20 p.m. after hearing that the charismatic vice presidential candidate would visit Southeast Missouri.

"A little sacrifice is good for the party," Griffith said.

By the time doors opened a half-hour late to distribute the tickets — six per person maximum — the line had grown to more than 200 people standing along the western side of the road. Hundreds more waited patiently in line at the Osage Community Center, where an alternative distribution site was established to ease parking problems at the political headquarters.

Palin will headline a rally that local Republicans hope will be the kick-off to a massive get-out-the-vote effort. A major party candidate appearance helps rally the troops and identify volunteers who will make telephone calls, knock on doors and help drive voters needing a ride to the polls, said Donna Lichtenegger, former county vice-chairwoman and local leader of U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof's campaign for governor.

"It is always fun when the big guys come to town," Lichtenegger said.

Palin's visit will be the first by a major party nominee to Southeast Missouri since the national nominating conventions in August. Palin is the running mate of U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee.

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, the Democratic nominee, visited Cape Girardeau in May before he had secured nomination.

While Griffith waited at the front of the line, at the end of the line just before 3 p.m. stood Karla Kiefner of Cape Girardeau County and Debby Schaefer of Cincinnati, Ohio, — who was in town for homecoming and decided to stay after hearing about the rally. "I'm going to stay to see our girl," Schaefer said.

Kiefner said she hoped to get the full allotment of six tickets and said that if she did she would bring her two daughters, aged 12 and 16, to hear the Alaska governor.

"It is an historic event and she is a good role model," Kiefner said. "They (her daughters) are very aware of the political process."

McCain was not the first choice of voters in Southeast Missouri in the Republican presidential primary. Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee won many counties, while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney carried Cape Girardeau County. There was no lack of enthusiasm, however, for the McCain-Palin ticket among those who stood patiently until the tickets arrived.

"She just made me more enthusiastic," Kiefner said. "She brought a real face to the ticket."

At the Osage Center, Jim Houseworth of Carterville, Ill., left work and drove to Cape Girardeau to make sure he secured a seat. "Its a big deal," he said, noting that he would be bringing his two college-age daughters and friends to the rally. "If people saw the truth, they would feel the same way."

If any tickets remain, they may be picked up at one of four sites around Southeast Missouri. There is a limit of six tickets per person and the person requesting the tickets will be required to give their name and full address. The information will be used to fill out databases of GOP supporters in the area.

To find a ticket, contact one of the following locations between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. today and Wednesday:

* Cape Girardeau County Republican Headquarters, 601 N. Kingshighway, Cape Girardeau.

* Butler County Republican Headquarters, 1901A Greenwood Drive, Poplar Bluff, Mo.

* Scott County Republican Headquarters, 900 S. Main St., Sikeston, Mo.

* St. Francois County Republican Headquarters, 301 N. Washington, Farmington, Mo.

IN RESPONSE:

I just read where Obama's trip to Hawaii cost more than Palin's clothes.Obama is a disgrace to the United States, and so his Michelle. They could care less about us.They just want to cause the U.S. to probably fall. They'll bring their terrorists friends over.I hope when they do they take care of the homos.I work with one and she's voting for him.

Tweety, or should I say Billybob. First of all have you looked around, the U.S. has already fallen thanks to the Republicans. Obama's trip to Hawaii was expensive, how about Bush throwing billions of dollars every month to Iraq, cleaning up after his father, while America is in a DEPRESSION. Terrorists and homo's? Seriously? What part of Deliverance are you and your UncleDaddy from? I guess ignorance is bliss.

When John McCain chose Sara Palin as his running mate, he cast aside good judgment, and for practical purposes waylaid his election. The truth about Palin is obvious to any attentive person. She was a political stunt, meant to fire up political hostilities and divert attention from catastrophic economic and international concerns.

We have had eight years of failed policies. Eight years of failures in international politics. Eight years of lobbyist and big business in control of government, at the expense of the other ninety-five percent of the American people. The Bush Administration took this nation into war using misdirection and deceit. Now we have lost over 4,000 of our finest with another 35,000 suffering life-altering injuries. The John McCain/Sara Palin policies much too closely mirror those of George Bush, and do not convey confidence for a better country and safer world. They are trying to run away from the Bush legacy, but their ideologies expose their complicity.

As the McCain/Palin campaign remains down in the polls, their strategies have denigrated into constant character assassination, with less and less value placed on policy. When their principles failed to stand on merit, out of desperation the campaign fabricated relationships and characterized Obama policies as socialist, or worse. Attempting to raise fear among the electorate is the same old Carl Rove strategy, as espoused by the brothers Limbaugh, that runs transparent now. Politics of fear, designed to create right and left lines of division, can no longer be validated. Most of the American voters are not stupid enough to fall into line behind these hate mongers again. I know this voter is not.

After eight years, and with the country reeling from the Bush Administration's managerial ineptitude and intellectual insolvency, we need a complete redirection in governmental strategy. This time I am standing with Colin Powell, Warren Buffett, Paul Volcker, Republican Senator Chuck Hagel and millions of other patriotic Americans. We support Barack Obama.

Stop_the_Games, you spelled that out excellently for people. Kudos to you. GO OBAMA!

..."It is always fun when the big guys come to town," Lichtenegger said...

Well, not necessarily. Last week when Dick Cheney came to town to support Peter Kinder the event was so lackluster that the Southeast Missourian didn't even do a follow-up story. Or maybe there was another reason for all the hush-hush secrecy!?!

Where did you read that Obama's trip to Hawaii cost more than Palin's clothes? I bet you heard that on Rush Limbaugh's show didn't you? Let me tell one thing about good ole' Cape Girardeau born and bred Rush Limbaugh, he is an idiot! When I was in college he started running his mouth about how Bill Clinton was selling cemetary plots at Arlington to the chinese. This guy is a total low-life who is basically a talk-show version of those Sun Magazines that you see in the check out lines at IGA. You know the one's where they say 1 Billion Chinese will jump in unison and knock planet earth out of orbit.

Before you believe any of that backwoods I heard this from my cousin carl who heard from his cousin jed that Barack Hussein Obama is a muslim radical terrorist who was sworn into the senate with his hand on the koran and is hellbent on bringing the terrorists over here so they can be in his cabinet and send us all to hell! The first massiah Kennedy sent US troops to Vietnam in the early 60's and the result was, dead: 58,159; 2,000 missing; wounded: 303,635. Obtained from Wikipedia.

Will Tina Fey be there also?

-- Posted by RocketSurgeon on Tue, Oct 28, 2008, at 7:31 AM

Well,If she were to come to this area and dance at the "Pony" I might grab a ticket and have a seat!!

-- Posted by GREYWOLF on Tue, Oct 28, 2008, at 8:42 AM

I'd go see Tina Fey...she is what she is supposed to be...funny! And good at it.

Gov. Palin is supposed to be presidential, or at least vice-presidential, and isn't. She's scary instead.

I have always believed "what goes around comes around." The repubs can blame the godfather of the repub party, Rushie poo, for getting Obama elected. Had he kept his big mouth shut & not encouraged all the robots from the repub party to vote for Obama in the primaries and "cause chaos in the Democratic party" to keep Hillary off the ticket we'd probably have a Clinton-Obama ticket, which would be much closer in the polls with McCain/Palin. Instead, we have a winner! Good job Rushie, job well done!!!

I am suprised to see that we actually have people writing on here that make sense, well for the most part! I agree whole-heartedly that Palin is nothing more than a stunt that worked for the first few weeks until people figured it out. Has anyone noticed that every clip from a McCain/Palin rally shows them trying to make the crowd boo, and every Obama/Biden clip is of the crowd cheering? The republican strategy is to create hate and anger, but the Demecrats are the ones who should be angry with how these hate mongers have run their campaign!

-- Posted by Get-real on Tue, Oct 28, 2008, at 2:55 PM

it amazes me how many individuals are comfortable with showing their ignorance to so many by making such uneducated statements in such a public forum.

I could be mistaken, but i think that Sarah Palin's visit is drawing a MUCH larger crowd than Obama and Jill Biden together. That in itself should speak volumes and gives me faith that there are much more intelligent, informed individuals out there than represented in this format. I will be there with my 2 teenage children who are thrilled to get to be part of this great event. GO McCain/Palin!!

-- Posted by havefaith1 on Tue, Oct 28, 2008, at 4:43 PM

Havefaith,

oh settle down! Perhaps you have forgotten that Cape Girardeau is a Republican meca! Did you not know that?

Of course Obama would not draw the crowd a Republican would draw!Frankly this entire 08'election is absolutely ridiculous. These two clowns running for the White House are hillarious. This is why I make fun of the situation!Go ahead and vote Republican but remember all politicians have the same DNA !

Anyway, what will she say that she hasn't already said?

Like I said, she would make a great dancer!

I wonder if Palin thinks Cape Girardeau is part of the real Missouri ... or real America.

-- Posted by blake.herzog on Tue, Oct 28, 2008, at 5:13 PM

Palin, probably couldn't find Missouri on a map.

By the way (Have Faith), the Obama visit to Cape was a closed door town hall style meeting at Thornegate back when he was running against Hillary so it wasn't the same desperation rally like this. I was at the Obama rally under the Arch in ST. Louis along with 100,000 others so forgive me if Palin's 6000 person rally doesn't overly impress me! Now if Obama decides to stop by he might not get as large a crowd but this is a rural area so go figure.

Louis Farrakan, the leader of the Nation of Islam, said that Barrack Hussein Obama is a Messiah. If Louis Farrakan endorses Barrack Hussein Obama shouldn't you be concerned. Sarah Palin will speak in Cape Girardeau to thousands of energized voters. All the polls indicate that McCain is drawing the bulk of his support from voters who are college educated. SO, a high percentage of the attendees at the event will be very well educated. Do a poll for the education level at the St. Louis rally. Not interested? Already know the results don't you. I believe the folks at the Show Me Center will have done their homework. Have you? Get real Mr. Get a life. You haven't even finished your college education, obtained a real job, and had to pay real taxes. One day you will convert. try the 35% TAX BRACKET A LITTLE WHILE.

-- Posted by Acts on Wed, Oct 29, 2008, at 12:05 AM

You're right about one thing, the eduation level of the rich people support McCain because he promises to keep helping them get richer and the poor get poorer! The people supporting Obama want a better life but will never have that chance if people like you tell them that since you went to college you know who they should vote for. Educated or not, I'll bet you that the majority of the "energized" people at the sho me center tomorrow do their homework on the issues by watching the bogus attack ads that McCain/Palin are using to cast fear and hate on this election!

-- Posted by Get-real on Wed, Oct 29, 2008, at 10:48 AM

Its been my experience over the last 55 years that most educated people are indeed uneducated!I have yet

to see where "common sense" is taught in college.

Most college graduates I have known couldn't tell you which two States border Washington D.C.! Nor could they tell me the difference between a Republican and Democrat! You know why? Because there isn't any!!!

Their all blood suckers and liers.I dare anyone here to proove that statement wrong. We all would be better off without a Federal Government or any Government!

Anyone here that thinks anything will change in Washington with either of these two clowns is indeed

without common sense!

If I were a McCain supproter I don't think I would bring up endorsements! You should do your homework... don't want to? Let me help you big guy! George Bush supports McCain so I'd be concerned. But seriously, McCain lost the LA Times, the New Yorker magazine, Colon Powell, The Chicago Tribune(who hasn't supported a Democrat in 160 yers), Christopher Buckley and The Washington Post to name a few. But he did pick up the endorsement of Al Qaeda supporters according to The Huffington Post! I'd be concerned buddy!

-- Posted by Get-real on Wed, Oct 29, 2008, at 11:15 AM

Oh The Washington Post? Great! I'm shocked and suprised. I'm overcomed with grief at their gut-wrenching decision. They also showed a cartoon of Palin "speaking in tongues" and God was shown saying "what the h--- is she saying". Great way to insult 80 million Pentecostal|Charismatics in AMerica. They are the bright bulbs of journalism. WOnder why they don't make similar comments about Muslims. I believe they are a little intimidated by the Muslim factor. I am glad that you are impressed with their endorsements.

Al-QUeda endorsing McCain? If you were to surmise that Al-Queda would rather have McCain over Obama - You're brain dead. You seriously need a mental evaluation. Oh by the way. I believe college would be a good option for you. You sound like you could make through the history class.
