Autism activist clarifies story info

To the editor:

Regarding the online version of Bob Miller's article last Thursday about the autism conference, I would like to make two clarifications.

The article said I crossed party lines to push needed legislation. I am still a Republican, but after witnessing the deplorable, self-serving behavior of state Sen. Peter Kinder (R) and Sen. Ken Jacob (D) on House Bill 852, I have decided to support only those candidates who place the best interests of children above their own political agenda. Therefore, I will be voting for Bekki Cook in November. Her actions and written policies clearly indicate to me, as a mother, her sincere concern for the welfare of Missouri's most precious resource, children.

I also was quoted as saying, "We're very pro-vaccine, but we're very pro-choice and you run an incredible risk, especially if your child has autoimmune disorders." The quote should have been, "We're very pro-vaccine, but we want parents to make an informed choice" (referring to vaccines that contain mercury). We have found Miller to be meticulous in his facts and accurate in his quotes. The Southeast Missourian is fortunate to have talent of his caliber.

And, as the mother of a child who suffers from vaccine-induced mercury poisoning, thank you for your courageous coverage of this controversial issue. The earlier series by Miller and Callie Clark has positively benefited families far outside your circulation area.
