Nine emaciated dogs seized at Old Appleton propertySaturday, September 27, 2008
The dogs, mostly pit bull mixes, one chow mix and one purebred boxer, are being treated and evaluated at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, said Requi Salter of the Humane Society. They were found severely emaciated, two of them tested positive for heartworms and all suffered from internal parasites, Salter said. "They were basically tied to trees and starving to death," Salter said. A suspect in the animal abuse case has been identified and will face charges, though none were filed as of Friday night, according to the sheriff's department. Formal charges are pending with the Cape Girardeau County prosecuting Attorney's office. Six of the dogs were adults, the oldest being about 4 years old, Salter said. The age of all three puppies was estimated at around 6 months, she said. The puppies seemed to have fared better than the older dogs in terms of the condition in which they were found, Salter said. The Humane Society will look for foster homes to care for the dogs until they can be made available for adoption, Salter said. All of the dogs were willing to let a veterinarian at Skyview Animal Clinic, at 883 Kingshighway, evaluate them. Salter said they all seem to have been previously handled and are social animals. "They knew we were there to rescue them, and they were ready to go," she said. It's my understanding that the person who did this gave the excuse that "she was unable to care for the dogs anymore due to the poor economy" (I saw this on KFVS12). What a load. Dog food is cheap, and if you don't want them, take them to a shelter, don't tie them to a tree so they can starve....
Kudos to the deputy who saw these dogs and called in the humane society.
The law needs to be harsher for people that do this. I don't understand the mentality that leaves animals to die a slow lingering death. There are always options. They need to sit in jail and be fined and take some compassion courses.
Shameful...I agree that if owners can no longer afford to feed their animals - surrender them and do the right thing. If you really love your animals, you'll give them up if you aren't able to care for them, not literally love them to death. I can't agree that dog food is cheap, not much is these days, but there's no excuse for this kind of neglect, period.
This was in the country! Don't chain them to trees! If the owner couldn't afford dog food, he/She could have atleast gave them water? Maybe they would have had a chance at getting food by chasing a rabbit, finding a bird's nest that had fallen...going through our/your trash anything!? I realize they then would have been stray dogs....but atleast they wouldn't be on their death bed. And h@ll, i'm not even a big fan of dogs.
But no, they were tied up so no food. I say jail time!
