Raising some money

The generous and good-hearted people of Southeast Missouri do not give up easily, not even when the remains of a hurricane all but bring communities to a halt.

That was the case last weekend when strong winds from Hurricane Ike swept through the area, leaving a mess of downed trees and property damage along with widespread power outages.

Two fundraising events that were planned last weekend were postponed, but organizers say they will be held.

The owners of Rose Bed Inn, Eldon Nattier and James Coley, say a sock hop benefit for the Family Resource Center has been rescheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. today. Proceeds will be used for roof repairs at the Family Resource Center.

Another fundraiser, "Ducks on the Mississippi" at Riverfront Park, also will be rescheduled, but no date has been set yet. The event is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Esprit and Southside Optimist clubs. The sponsor ducks are on display in the window of the Old Town Cape office on Broadway. Proceeds from duck race will benefit the Optimist International Childhood Cancer Campaign and other youth projects.

Considerable effort has gone into both of these events to benefit the community. Your support of both will be appreciated.
