25 years ago: Sept. 21, 1983

New signal lights have been installed along Broadway's one-way section, which means the conversion to two-way traffic along the length of the street could come either Thursday or Friday; all that remains to be done is electrical synchronization of the lights and some changes in traffic signs.

BENTON, Mo. -- Scott County Sheriff Bill Ferrell issues a warning, particularly for elderly women living alone, after a Vanduser, Mo., resident loses about $500 to a couple posing as title sales representatives.

50 years ago: Sept. 21, 1958

Eleven Lutheran churches in the area hold a simultaneous Crusade for Christ Rally at Houck Field House in Cape Girardeau and in Poplar Bluff, Mo., in the afternoon; keynote speaker at the Cape Girardeau venue is the Rev. Theodore Raedeke of St. Louis, denominational associate director of evangelism.

Bess Litzelfelner, Jackson public librarian, and Clarence N. Crites, general superintendent of the Jackson City Power and Light plant, were honored at a banquet last night for their more than 32 and 30 years of service to the city.

75 years ago: Sept. 21, 1933

One hundred men have been put to work in lower Southeast Missouri alone by the Frisco Railroad; the augmented force was partly needed for handling cotton and cotton seed.

The Rev. R.L. Harrell, chairman of the Central Relief Organization, says he will investigate the procedure necessary to secure a part of the pork allotted by the federal government to Missouri agencies for relief distribution; the government has purchased about 260,000 hogs from the stockyards in East St. Louis, Ill., and this meat will be prepared for distribution for relief purposes.

100 years ago: Sept. 21, 1908

The Oran, Mo., fair association has arranged to have a special train leave Cape Girardeau on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning for the horse races to be held on those days; each day, a trotting race, a pacing race and two running races will be staged.

The old stone wall around the Doyle property across from the opera house, having been afflicted with bulges for some time, has been taken down and is now being built up straight.
