GOP future

WE'LL NEVER know but I'll bet Jon Rust is kicking himself in the behind for writing a gushing pice about Sarah Palin being the future of the GOP prior to her meltdown on the ABC interview. If she's the future of the Republican Party, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the party is dead.

No difference

LET ME understand this presidential campaign as well as I can. The Republicans have controlled Congress for 12 of the last 14 years, during which time Sen. John McCain has been an active member of that body. The Republicans have also controlled the White House for the last eight years. And McCain has claimed proudly that he has voted 90 percent of the time with Bush-Cheney and his fellow Republicans. Now the McCain-Palin ticket is campaigning on a Republican platform that is the same as the one of 2000 and 2004. And McCain-Palin are trying to tell us that they are the voice of change. What are they planning to change? I watched Sarah Palin's interview on ABC, and she could not come up with a single difference.

No comparison

WHEN THE Democrats start comparing Jesus to Barack Obama, it's time to get worried. Jesus was the son of God and teacher of God's Word, not a community leader.

Pushing more food

WITH REGARD to the growing obesity problem: I stopped at a fast-food restaurant that encouraged customers to buy more food because it's cheaper. It's the same way everywhere you go. If you order something small, you're told, "Oh, no, this is a lot cheaper and bigger." I think they should stop doing that. No wonder the kids are getting heavy.

Spending money

REGARDING THE county commissioners buying a new pickup truck: We passed a sales tax to resurface our roads, I live on County Road 383. The county ran out of money, so now we're going to put off paving my road until next year. The weeds are higher than a pickup truck on some of the gravel roads. The county hasn't got the money to mow the weeds or finish the paving, but it has the money to buy a new truck for a commissioner. I'd like them to explain that.

Great Elvis show

I WANT to thank whoever arranged to have the Elvis Legends show at the SEMO District Fair. That was one great concert. I don't think anybody left unhappy. It was great.

Peg posted an interesting quote from Mr. Jones, County Commissioner..."We have the same attendance that we've had for the last several years. None," Jones said.

After asking the context of the comment, Peg replied:

"Melange -- Jones made his statement as he moved the meeting into the public hearing portion of Monday's meeting."

My thoughts, "Thanks Peg! Well, Mr. Jones might want to be careful what he wishes for. Community might call his bluff, I know at least one member considering altering her schedule to do so."

Community apathy is running rampant! (ie County commission, public school district et all...lots of speak out moaning and groaning, yet no one is attending OUR public meetings to voice their concerns to those who can make the appropriate changes...no wonder things are running amuke!) We have issues going on at the county and we are ignoring them. Perhaps those who can adjust their schedule should consider attending a Commission meeting to show these folks we DO care about what they are and are not doing???

I doubt if Mr. Rust is kicking anything. Governor Palin did a fine job, in a hostile environment. We hope some day big media will put the junior senator from Chicago through a similar grilling and see if he responds as well.

And ‘controlling Congress’ is an oxymoron for sure. The voters ‘control’ Congress. If you think the Executive Branch controls Congress, you need to read up on separation of powers. McCain’s 90 percent is not a zero sum game. He has also supported a number of bi-partisan initiatives that have proven him to be more independent of party politics than most. Whereas Senator Obama, in his brief tenure in Congress, has voted with the liberal party line 96 percent and has not stuck his neck out for anything substantial. In reality, Senator McCain along with his bold running mate, Governor Palin, will change those things that need to be changed, improve things that need to be improved and lead our country, as well as the GOP, strong into the future. Senator Obama has shown no signs or inkling to change anything – at least for the better.

good morning everyone,

Me'Lange, once again, liked your thoughts for the day, not to mention all the television quotes. Not too snappy this morning or else I could probably come up with a few. It DOES break up all the political talk. I'm so confused by all of it now I don't know what is what anymore.

Good morning every bozzy. Well, I have a special little message for Just_Me_and_My_Fuzzy_Alien_Bunny.

Things aren't really looking so well are they? After all, Palin has lost 10 popularity points in just three days. Additionally, appears that her pork barrel spending on Tanning Beds and depression meds just solidifies the national consensus that she is just some crazy old fuddy duddy.

Now, seeing McCain himself has been labeled as McNuts be most of his peers, it does appear that the two peas in a pod were meant for one another. But that doesn't really make them "electable" does it? After all, with all this talk of change and reform and dispositioning themselves from the Republican party...it does seem to create a little conundrum (sp) for you and all of your so called *snicker* Republican/Conservative friends in the SO forum.

Yes...you know what I mean. If YOU and your peers vote for McCain and Palin, well....you're really not Republican OR Conservative are you? Radical or even *snicker* Liberal, but certainly NOT Republican or Conservative. After all, even Carl Rove and Rush Limbaugh realize this.

Now, if we want to get to the nitty gritty of things, it's quite obvious that McCain and Palin represent the new age of Socialist and Communist Reformers. Yes, they want their CHANGE, but it's not American. It's the "Fundamentals" *snicker* of Socialist doctrine that both Palin and McCain represent...You know...weirdos.

Anyhow, I'll let you and Babe stew upon the socialist values of your new party. Don't worry, I'm here in the shadows still revealing all of the McCain/Palin Dirt. Don't worry though, I'll be sure to make a special appearance the day of the November election...in order to glout, and rub it in. You know....basically crucify you with all of the rhetorical hot air you have been spewing in my absence.

Have fun on your weekly excursion. I'll be watching. ;o)

Hum...What were you doing at "a fast-food restaurant" IF you are so darn concerned about YOUR "kids are getting heavy". Or...Just say NO! Or...Think outside the happy meal...perhaps, you could share the larger meal...saving money and reducing portions. And personally, if there is a better value for my dollars...I appreciate employees sharing that information with me.

There is an important difference between the "change" both candidates promise. We have a congress that has a Democrat majority, and McCain has said he would veto anything they send him that he doesn't like. If McCain becomes president nothing will change. Bills will be introduced, the president will veto or threaten to veto and nothing will get accomplished.

There is also the supreme court justices that the next president will appoint. I don't want anymore uber conservative judges on the supreme court.

Melange,

I don't suspect Just Me & My is Instructor.

I could be very wrong in this, but if memory serves me correctly, Instructor's writing style was poor(er) than Just Me & My's. Don't you think? I know there would be an attempt on anyone's part to mask who they are if they were changing screen names, but it's difficult to become much, much better at writing in such a short time.

Would be interesting if JUST and Instructor were one and the same (though I think not), because Silent and JUST have been getting along when Poppa and Instructor could not. Just an observation and my two cents. And we all know how far 2 cents can go these days.

Good morning all.

Red,

I don't want Obama in either, I don't like everything McCain says and does at times also, just not sure about voting for him. I think I already know whom I am going to vote for, but don't want to get into a big argument with some who always like to fight or argue. It doesn't matter which one I would say, because someone would pick a fight regardless of who gets chosen. Does that make sense?? LOL Hope so. Well I really have to leav now or will be late, see you good folks later.

Since forum behaviors came up...

Rant begin~

You know, what gets me...I used very soft, creative words to express my frustration with another poster yesterday, after that poster made an obvious personal attack by attacking volunteerism and community involvement...and MY comment WAS removed. When asked for an explanation, I was told another poster found my comment offensive. In other words, someone hit the "!" mark.

Explain to me HOW in the sam heck referring to someone as a "horse's back-side" or "Jack A." IS more offensive than the multi-tude of derogatory, demeaning names and behaviors I've read in this forum???

My "beef": There does NOT seem to be equality of enforcement in the forum's rules and NO due process what-so-ever (such as, the webmaster reviewing/reading the context the statement was made in reference to).

For example, when the webmaster was asked to remove the "C" word, which was addressed to Babe and Me'Lange...they refused to do so. Yet, "horse's back-side" or "Jack A." WAS more offensive??? Gimme a break!

Rant over~

You are correct about McCain (90% with Bush), but how can you determine this concerning Obama. He is totally different, and he is indeed a vote for change. All of the checks and balances we have placed in our government ensure it will be hard to change quickly, but at least with Obama there is movement in the correct direction.

I agree with the comment on Scott County and the money trouble. This administration is showing poor planning and management in each and every department. The one's that are suffering are the taxpayers. It is time for a CHANGE! We need honest individuals in office and not the good ole boys that we have in office now. Since they have come into office, this county has went downhill and they want to lay the blame on loss of taxes. They knew this tax was ending but they didn't try to conserve money. Our roads are in poor condition, weeds are high, our county has the name of "not cooperating" with other agencies - thanks to the Sheriff's Department and the administration keeping their head in the sand and just keep on spending the taxpayers money. Where was the Sheriff when the power went down. E911 was loosing power and they couldn't cover half the county although the County spent money to update the center and get state of the art equipment. IT IS TIME TO CHANGE THIS GOVERNMENT before we become the next broke county.

Just got finished reading an article in the Washington Post about the refusal of Gov. Palins staff to testify in the "Troopergate" inquiry. The Republican Committee sent a group of lawyers to Alaska to take over for her lawyer and try to stop this investigation. Why??

Gov. Palin has said on numerous occasions she welcomes the investigation, she wants it in the open and she did nothing wrong. If this is true, why not tell the Republican Committee to let it run and get it over with. I have some suspicions why she doesn't want to tell the Committee to stop with the interference.

I have to ask the question. What do you want to see? This thing cleared up and go into the election with a clear mind of what happened or to have after the election, especially if McCain/Palin win, find the VP is a criminal and will then be removed. Country First?? I don't think so.

And to all the spin masters and hard core Republicans who don't like facts but would rather listen to Sean Hannity or Rush. Tell me why you don't want the truth known before election day. And please don't give me the partisan bull. Facts are facts. Is not that what you guys have always preached. Come on be fair and honest. Show some common sense and get the facts out.

442,

I must have missed the day you are talking about, but bad language and bashing are not the sole purview of just one or two people, even a couple of posters whom I respect have done so.

Theorist,

I agree up to a point, while poor writing ability/style is not necessarily an indication of a lack of intelligence, it is very difficult to write well without a certain level of intelligence. Of course then you introduce knowledge as a variable.

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 10:12 AM

"Free" health care won't cost half our income. If we weren't spending so much money in Iraq, we could spend more money on our own country. Obama wants to cut taxes on the middle class. He said he would raise taxes on people making 250K a year or more, which would make them like they were during the Clinton years.

Today's combined polls show a tie again (http://www.cnn.com/...), reflecting the disastrous effect that Sarah Pain's interview had on voters’ minds. People are now realizing that she's not as smart as previously thought, and that her folksy and colorful rhetoric won't really help to fix any real problems. She still appeals to the right-wing con base because of her extreme views, but there's a good chance that Roe vs. Wade won't be THE central issue in this election as it has been in the last two. It's getting harder and harder for Mr. Maverick to dodge his party's huge responsibility for the financial crisis that is upon us. Thanks to the GOP and Mr. Bush's failed policies, many Americans are now having to choose between paying the mortgage and filling the tank to go to work, so just how much trouble do people need to be in before they give up the abortion issue and start voting to fix the real problems?

Sarah Pain's rainbow is certainly disappearing fast. If she gives another interview (scripted or not, she can't help it) the GOP will need to get Karl Rove in the spin room fast to do some damage control, because that tie in the polls will be short lived.

mediamessiah,

Agreed, I dealt with a lot of mentally ill individuals with a surprising amount demonstrating very high intelligence. Paranoid Schizophrenics often exhibited very good verbal and writing skill while being highly represented in crimes of violence. Unfortunately most mentally ill individuals don't know it and often don't receive proper care. I may be one of them and no one has told me. To be clear, not knocking those with such problems, just need to keep in mind.

The alternative is to continue giving half of your income to ExxonMobil and Halliburton, and then some more to bail out banks that grew accostumed to dodge responsibility and accountability. If the Supreme CEO of the country (Bush) can get away with the things he does, why would the CEOs of these financial giants, who are his friends, think otherwise?

how about taking more money from those who produce and give it to those who make stupid decisions in life and expect someone else to make it right?

-- Posted by mediamessiah

How is bailing out Freddy and Fanny, AIG, and other companies any more right?

I do not claim to be a financial wizard, but if I, as an individual, am supposed to take responsibility for my decisions why doesn't a company? Granted if these companies were to 'close' many would be without jobs, but where is the responsibilty of the CEO's/Owners/Stockholders or who ever runs these companies?

Not trying to sound 'bashy', I honestly don't see the difference in one bail out over the other. And I don't think that those that didn't 'read the small print' on their home loans deserve any bail out either. I guess I'm just looking for understanding of the difference.

Well, I hate to tell you, but if Just Me & My were here, you'd get a different (right wing) poll thrown back at you for that. And we have all learned that Just Me & My's sources for his polls are absolute, right?

So, your poll would be negligent in his eyes. I can't let you go on thinking you've trumped him!

I think yesterday when Just me & My spoke of McCain's evolving ideas (flip-flopping), we pointed out one of Just Me & My's character flaws. He can't accept or admit that McCain could have a perceived negative trait, flip-flopping. I would hold Just me & My's opinions in higher regard if I thought he wasn't so extremely closed to the idea that McCain has flip-flopped, as has everyone in politics. Just me & My tried to extol upon McCain a virtue (evolving ideas) rather than owining up that he has flip-flopped.

Just me & My would rather blame you for bringing up the term flip-flop, or spin it so that McCain has evolved instead. That's not reasonable, it's irrational.

hilleco,

the money supply is tightening up. i see progress in that the Fed resisted temptation to lower interest rates and in fact thought seriously about raising the rates. i think the latter would be good to get the inflation nonsense a bit more under control and allow the market to correct itself. while the Fed is giving AIG a nice cushiony spot to fall at least they did allow Lehman Bros. to take a hit and would not have helped Merrill Lynch either.

Back in the 80's or whenever all those S&L failures the economy certainly survived that. i think this will be much the same. in a couple year (no matter who is in the white house) we will look back and say "Do you remember when AIG was in trouble and all those other financial institutions were tanking?"

Surely the savings and loan crisis was a systemic issue (over 700 small institutions), but I think we are facing a much larger scale "tragedy of commons" right now. (Kind of like, the affect of the flu v. Level III, Grade B Cancer) Plus, IMO...the overall health of our economy was in much better condition during the 1980's, when the savings and loan crisis began. For example: higher savings/investment rate, less credit per household et al. (Kind of like a healthy teenager getting the flu v. an 86 year old with serious health issues getting the flu.)

Me'Lange and SWBG: I posted this from Frank Shostak "Are Fannie and Freddie Too Big to Fail?" at the bottom of Brian Blackwell's article.

"We suggest that the seizure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (FF) by the government cannot help the housing market or the economy. Most people hold the mistaken view that the government has extra real resources that can be used in emergencies. This is erroneous. The government is not a wealth generator; it can only consume and redistribute real wealth. What is needed to revive the economy is a growing pool of real savings."

So Me'Lange you are right on the mark on savings according to this economist.

My view: Savings are generated off production and it takes savings to generate increased production and expand the economy.

OH, and before the "doom and gloom" patrole comes out to smack Me'Lange (Liberals) with their baton...

Think about this, part of being responsible for one self, part of taking care of your own...IS paying attention to what is actually going on in your surroundings/enviroment.

Will this situation affect ME personally...other than higher prices to borrow funds (which I'm not planning/expecting to do anytime soon), paying higher prices of for goods consumed because businesses will have to pass this added cost on to consumers (yeah...that will happen, but I can deal by adjusting what I buy, how I consume et al)...

Thus, I don't perceive sharing facts as "doom and gloom", more of a "heads up buddies" you better be hanging on to your bloomers, because we ARE in for a bump-y ride!

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 2:13 PM

Rick,

I'm sure it has had some effect on the economy of China. As for fuel prices to ship not so much. Say it costs an additional $1,000,000, due to fuel, to export a ship full of automobiles. The ships can carry 5,000 autos. That's only a $200 per vehicle increase.

I assume the importer pays the shipping cost in most cases. Remember we always owned what was "on the water."

-- Posted by cptfa on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 2:18 PM

82allamerican and Rick,

I have not checked the consumer confidence numbers, but since I have read/heard the media report that fuel consumption (a staple good) has declined for the first time in 20 years AND retail numbers have been down accross the board (except for Wally, the discount giant) AND (can't back this up), but I think much of goods American consumes are made in China...

One could draw the conclusion, an US economic downturn would have a domino affect on China (and other countries around the world...that the US does business with).

Right on. Unfortunately I have observed for a long time now that REAL ISSUES turn people off as (like you said) doom & gloom. These issues do not "energize the base" (as the pundits like to describe the phenomenon of voters "caring" about something). Except, of course, if the issue involves a fertilized egg--then all he11 breaks loose and people go out of their way to cast a ballot. Wouldn't it be wonderful if these people also cared about issues like the economy, immigration, war & peace, freedoms, etc. with the same passion?

After posting a few thoughts on the local immigration issues...I received an interesting email from someone who retired from government employment and has much more/better quality information about the immigration issue than I ever cared to research.

Paraphrasing his thoughts (and hope I capture their meaning/intent well)...Basically stated that while on the surface our representatives appear to be concerned about this issue...underneath...little funding is provided to enforce our legislation AND our economy does support/depend on lower income jobs and illegal immigrants fill that void.

There are exceptions of course, you are one...

-- Posted by Theorist on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 3:41 PM

I believe there were like 1000 bank failures in 1000 days at one point in the 80's. The lossening of the money supply, ie too easy to get credit, has caused this mess. A tightening should assist in the savings department however this would put a damper on investment and growth in the short term. Either way the world has moved on and what was then is no longer what is now...or somehting like that.

-- Posted by shortwhitebaldguy on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 3:53 PM

Theorist,

I think we often confuse and mix the terms “debate” and “argue”. They may sound the same, but really aren’t. I have mentioned on here that my best friend is a self avowed “Liberal”. Once while “debating” her I asked her why she was not willing to listen to any other position or accept that she might possibly be wrong. She told me that she had already studied all of the important issues and made up her mind, so there was no real need to consider anything else. The only issue on which she ever changed her mind was firearms ownership. She was absolutely adamant that no one needed to own a firearm and that the mere possession of one changed an individual’s personality and made them more likely to commit violence. When she and her husband were threatened, I got a call to borrow a gun. When I told her I could not do so legally, she couldn’t believe it, she was outraged. I explained to her the procedure and she obtained two the next day.

It has been my experience that being close minded is not exclusive to any political persuasion and may not necessarily always be a bad thing, but that would take too much time to explain, sorry for the long post.

While the ruling of the SCOTUS in reference to the 2nd Amendment was a welcome relief, it was a marginal victory in that it did not go far enough and left the door wide open when they stated that it did not preclude "REASONABLE" regulations. I believe this will wind up back in the courts as is evidenced by DC's resistance and the ongoing desire by some jurisdictions to pass "reasonable" restrictions. On this issue, I am not "open minded".

SWBG,

I think the consensus of the courts have been that none of the rights are “absolute”, yelling fire in a crowded theatre and such. I guess the devil is always in the detail, but is not as complicated or unattainable as many would like to make it seem. I have never read any credible research that indicates waiting periods proved any worth. With NICS it really is not needed. The concept that someone who is convicted of a crime loses some if not all of their “rights” thus the term “out law”. At one time someone who was declared an “outlaw” had no protection or rights and could be killed. As to the 2nd Amendment I am pretty much in line with the Libertarian Party.

Something I have always wondered. How does the background check show if a person has mental health issues if medical records are private?

-- Posted by BABE on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 5:43 PM

I totally agree with "spending money". Our county government does not know how to balance a budget or spend the taxpayers money wisely. There is a lot of purchases of large vehicles, redecorating offices, purchasing new computers, changing the color of the staff shirts because the color is not pleasing or just because and this is only in the Sheriff's department. Our Commissioners need to review these departments for excessive waste or maybe its time to change the people and vote the other guy in.

-- Posted by Breezy1 on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 5:45 PM

Babe,

The NICS "Improvement Act of 2007" was passed in the wake of the Virginia Tech Shootings and gives BATFE access to many mental health records that would indicate a person should not possess weapons.

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 5:52 PM

Babe,

I think it would show if there has been a civil committment. Meaning if someone was committed involuntarily to a mental institution. To do so requires a court order signed by a judge and a warrant is issued for transportation and detainment to a mental health hosptial. However your assumption is correct regarding other mental health treatment. It is a private health matter.

I think this is VERY relevant and, especially today, it deserves the repetition. Just turn the TV on or open your newspaper and you'll see why. And then watch these:

Bottom line: Mr. Maverick doesn't know CR@P about the economy. He can't see a problem when the whole financial system is collapsing in front of him. How can anyone expect him to fix it? And consider that his economic team would would be full of the same GOP "experts" who brought this disaster to the American people. Voting for McCain is like allowing the fox to guard the hen house.

Red

I loved your story about your liberal friend and firearms. It reminded me when Hurricane Andrew hit my sister's small town in Louisiana. Of course, all power was off and few in her isolated subdivision neighborhood had generators. The next afternoon the sheriff deputy came boating down the bayou with a bullhorn telling everyone that looters had been seen but the department did not have the manpower to catch them all. He said they would be on their own for protection.

I think you can guess what happened. The folks (few) who would never, ever consider having a firearm rushed over to those who did have firearms begging for one. The neighborhood men got together for a meeting and made the unarmed folks take extra shifts in the 24 hour guard they established for protection. LOL

I have pictures of my sister and several of the neighborhood ladies sitting in her yard, armed.

mesiah,

What was my argument? I was debating for the sake of debate. Red and I have done that in the past and I think we have an understanding. Anyways I would like to know what side you think I was taking. In my youth I had favored strong gun control laws. I think time has shown these have been ineffective. And while I am not as strong a proponent as some I do believe in little infringement as possible. Of course that is where the debate lies perhaps.

-- Posted by shortwhitebaldguy on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 6:15 PM

Unlib,

I am not going to get into a drawn out debate on this issue. McCain said he does not understand as much about economics as I should. If answered honestly this would apply to most candidates for the office. I don’t know that we have ever elected an economist as President. From what I have been told Jimmy Carter was one of the most intelligent presidents we have ever had and that did not work out so well. No one person can possess all of the knowledge they need to run this country and that is the reason he has a cabinet and we also have the congress. You act like we are electing a king who can dictate what is and is not going to happen. I don’t care what McCain or Obama say, what happens economically in this country is going to be out of their hands. Neither one will have the authority, power, ability or ignorance to have much impact one way or the other.

-- Posted by BN1401 on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 6:19 PM

Black Shadow,

Well stated. In fact a president's power over the economy is more indirect than anything direct.

Dear poster buddies,

Me'Lange and her volunteer buddies need some help and/or direction in the medical legal fields.

One of our ideas has taken on a life of its own...provided a NO cost medical clinic for a day. We have shifted this to a stand-alone project and are shooting for Make a Difference Day 2009.

Several of us had seen a 60 minutes program with such a program...RAM. Here is there web-link.

http://www.ramusa.org/learn/media.html

I emailed RAM early this morning...and this was the founder's reply.

"RAM would certainly consider a visit to Cape Girardeau with a RAM team of doctors, dentists and optometrists. However they would be licensed in states other than Missouri. If RAM will be allowed in with out of state providers, plus MO licensed providers that wish to volunteer, we will be happy to do a complete weekend and provide all equipment etc.

Let me know.

Thanks,

Stan Brock

Founder RAM"

All I can say is WOW! IF we (our community) can pull this off successfully, think how many individuals currently without health, dental and vision care can be helped.

However, that obsticle Mr. Brock mentioned is wayyyy outside my area of expertise...someone Please HELP us!!! Any direction, advise would be very appreciated!

-- Posted by shortwhitebaldguy on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 6:36 PM

Babe,

Scenarios like this repeat themselves in hurricanes and riots, yet many still do not accept that firearms ownership can be a good thing. I do not advocate that everyone or even most possess a firearm, I just don't want them to interfere with my right to do so. I know however they will continue to do so and expect someone to pull their fat out of the fire when things go bad and of course we will.

Obama is half black and half white. What is your problem? He is running a campaign using his black ancestory but that doesn't change the fact.

-- Posted by BABE on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 6:55 PM

In that case I am a French-German-Swedish-Dutch-Cherokee Indian-Caucasian American. And I want to be referred as such for now on.

-- Posted by BadMomma on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 7:11 PM

mm & babe,

just wondering why you constantly bring it up. historically the white race in this country considered a person to be black if they had even 1/8th black blood in their ancestory. Culturally most in the white community view mixed race individuals as black.

there are people who will vote for McCain because he is white. so if people vote for Obama because he is black or mixed then that is their perogative. i prefer to vote for someone based on what I think they can do for our country.

Now I understand that your comments are to poke fun of the media frenzy associated with the Obama campaign. To me that makes no more sense than attacking McCain for his number of houses or how attractive his wife is. Totally irrelevant.

Some perceive Obama as playing the race card. I think he is playing his ethnicity to gain votes with a certain constituency. that may offend some but will likely gain him more votes.

if his objective is to win the presidency he seems to be doing quite well for a junior senator with little experience of mixed race.

"No comparison"

You foolishly said,

"WHEN THE Democrats start comparing Jesus to Barack Obama, it's time to get worried. Jesus was the son of God and teacher of God's Word, not a community leader."

Not one Democrat has referred to Senator Barack Obama as a community "leader." Senator Barack Obama was a community "activist." Jesus Christ was a comminity ACTIVIST, as well.

You people who like to talk about God's Word, in your phony holier than thou attitudes, whould really read and understand the New Testament, and get down off of your high horses, while you are at it. Christ does not like hyprocracy. He likes hands and hearts that "do" for ALL His children on earth, not mouths that merely "spew" meaningless, superficial, platitutdes and Bible verses.

I would question as to whether you are a true Christian. I see no Christian spirit within you. You talk alot about Christ, but you do not walk like Him.

Amen.

Work you a*s off, pay your taxes, so Republicans can cover the loses of their friends who bet wrong, and lost. OH, NO.... they really didn't lose, because YOU, by working at K-Mart, Rhodes 101, the hospital, cleaning houses for the better off in Cape, P&G, Wal-Mart, and a host of other lower paying jobs, will pay off those loses of the Republican fat cats.

The sad part is, because you are uninformed, you will vote for Republicans in November.

I just do not understand your stupidity.

mediamessiah,

Please, do NOT turn THIS into a political discussion. There are many, many individuals we who can be helped IF our community (can stop bickering about the election for just ONE moment and) offer some constructive advice!

I have emailed Gov. Blunt, Representative Jetton, Senators McCaskill (spelling) and Crowell asking for their assistance. (Would welcome others to send supporting ones also.)

ANY constructive suggestions in overcoming this obsticle are very welcome!

Guess we will find out who actually walks the walk! YOU can make a difference.

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 7:30 PM

SWBG,

You are right. My mixed race grandson can not claim to be Caucasian. Well I guess you can "claim" anything you want to, but to the legal system and to everyone who sees him, he will be black or African American.

Obama cannot deny that he is "black" any more than Tiger Woods or Colin Powell, it is just something over which they have no control. He also cannot change the fact that a significant majority of African Americans and others will place his race as a priority and cannot keep others from voting against him because of it.

Both McCain and Obama have the same goal and will what they can to achieve that. Heck one of them might even promise change or jobs or some such absurdity.

I agree that hyphenated Americans is absurd, but it is the world in which we live; maybe some day...

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 7:36 PM

Me'Lange,

I will also seriously consider contacting the legislators to support this activity once I have done a little more research. I don't accept that the poor have no health care as I have had to go to the ER often enough and wait six to eight hours for a serious condition to know better. I am not blaming them, just stating a fact. They do not, to my knowledge have access to dental or optometric care however.

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 7:45 PM

Red_Rhino,

Sure the "poor" can go and receive treatment...BUT they are STILL liable for the charges...its NOT free!!!

I'm NOT avocating "free healthcare". However, WE have individuals in our community that AVOID medical treatment because they can NOT pay for it (and don't want to be on the hook for the bill...some less advantaged care about their credit rating too.). FACT. Plan and simple! (AND these are not necessarily unemployed individuals. They ARE folks like you and me.)

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 7:50 PM

Red,

I just realized you may have been speaking of those WITH Medicaid or MO children's healthcare coverage. THOSE are not the folks we will be targeting.

Honestly, not sure all of RAM's in's and outs, but our groups thoughts...the no cost clinic will be for those withOUT insurance coverage or govt assisted coverage.

shortwhitebaldguy said: "In fact a president's power over the economy is more indirect than anything direct."

True. But the president gets to pick his cabinet and surround himself with advisers. In McCain's case, these advisers would come from the same GOP circles that provided Bush with the "experts" that destroyed our financial system. What good is it to keep the same people in charge of the economy, if they have been given 8 years to do something and didn't? If you vote for McCain, you're voting for the perpetuation of the damage that the Republicans have already done to this country. Or do you really believe that McCain will be much of a change if he gets elected? At least Obama has a different perspective on issues, and he can do something McCain and Bush apparently can't: think before making a decision. Just my opinion.

I have a retired relative who was complaining the other day about being bored. I advised them to go somewhere and do volunteer work. Of course you know the answer to that.

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 8:14 PM

Uberlib,

Gaack, this is it and I am out. What difference does it make who the economic advisors are if the president has no real authority or ability to influence or change economic policy. Since when do "advisors" have more authority than the president? I have no real hope or fear that this election will change anything one way or the other.

Hope everyone has a good evening.

WHO ME said: "Democrats put this crash into motion in 1977 in Jimmy Carter's fist year. Clinton put it into hyper drive and the Dem's would not let GW slow it down in 2005. It was a failed Democrat policy."

That's an interesting theory, but it's a bit of a stretch. It has a huge flaw: you ignore the GOP years and just blame the Democrat administrations for all the problems (hard to believe that 20+ years of GOP power didn't leave a dent in the economic policies).

But let's just say, for the sake of continuing this argument, that what you wrote is possible. Then, what did the Republicans do to fix the "mistakes" during the time they had all instruments of power in their hands? But be careful with your answer, because either way you lose: 1) if you say that the problem hasn't been fixed in the GOP administrations, then what the he11 did the Republicans do during their time in power? or 2) if you say that the economy was fundamentally sound at the end of the GOP administrations, then how do you explain the current situation after 8 years of Bush policies?

That's like a fan of a football team that has been losing for 8 straight seasons blaming the 1977 coach for all the losses. Worse, the fan still supports hiring the current coach's protege as the next coach. Amazing, isn't it?

WHO ME said: "Facts are facts."

Except when they show the hypocrisy of the Republican party. Then they are no longer "facts", but the "liberal media conspiracy".

Sorry its so long! This will be the BO concession/they stole my election Speech!!

How the Grinch Stole Election Day

(With respects to Theodor S. Geisel)

Every Chad

Down in Chad-ville

Liked voting a lot ...

But the Grinch,

Who lived just north of Chad-ville

Did NOT!

The Grinch hated voting! He thought it a bore.

Now, please don't ask why. Could be Bush, could be Gore.

It could be his heart bled with liberal mush.

It could be, perhaps, that he listened to Rush.

But I think the real reason his trust was so shattered

Was the great Grinchy view that his vote never mattered.

BUT

Whatever the reason,

Lack of trust, lack of goals,

The Grinch dreaded that day when Chads went to the polls.

He just hated those speeches and negative ads,

And when push came to shove, he just hated the Chads.

He just hated their theme parks, their football-team rooters,

He just hated their gun laws, their barmaids at Hooters.

He just hated their weather, even hated their hate.

And he hated that they were a battleground state.

"So they're making their choices," he snarled with a sneer.

"This 'Decision Two Thousand' is practically here!

"They'll struggle to choose 'tween a crumb and a bum,

" 'Cause a voter's a voter, no matter how dumb."

Then he growled, his Grinch fingers nervously drumming,

"I MUST find a way to keep outcomes from coming!"

For tomorrow, he knew ...

All the flag-waving souls,

Would again waste their efforts on Clintons or Doles.

And by then, oh, the polls! Oh, the polls! Polls! Polls! Polls!

That's the one thing he hated! The POLLS! POLLS! POLLS! POLLS!

So the Chads, rich and poor, and by bus, car, or boat,

They would vote! And they'd vote!

And they'd VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

They would vote to ban smoking or clearing your throat.

They would even vote laws in for curbing your goat.

And THEN ...

They'd sing that anthem. It always came later.

Be they Bush-ites or Gore-ites or ites of Ralph Nader.

They'd stand close together, and though still full of fight,

They'd stand and they'd sing, by that dawn's early light.

And the more the Grinch thought of Election Day's ring,

The more the Grinch thought, "I must stop this whole thing!

"Why, for two hundred years I've put up with it now!

"I MUST stop these outcomes from coming!

"... But HOW?"

Then he got an idea!

Yes, a legal idea!

THE GRINCH

GOT AN AWFUL BUT LEGAL IDEA!

"I know just what to do!" The Grinch laughed with a jig.

And he wove from his goat a Sam Donaldson wig.

And into the mirror he spoke with grand rancor,

"With this helmet of hair, they'll all think I'm an anchor!"

"All I need are some ballots ..."

The Grinch looked around.

But since ballots were private, there were none to be found.

So he made his own ballot, printing letters quite little,

And he scattered the names, running holes down the middle,

And he stuck it together with Chad-berry spittle.

And he said, "They'll need Einstein to figure this riddle!"

THEN

He loaded his boxes, and without looking nervous

Put a sign on his van that said "Voter News Service."

THEN

The Grinch pulled away in his van with a screech

Toward the pads of the Chads in a place called "Palm Beach."

When he came to the first polling place in the square,

All the lines were quite long. Thoughtful talk filled the air,

As the Chads chatted merits of managed health care.

"Vote early and often," the Grinch said with a grin.

And he marched to the front of the line and stepped in.

There he left all his ballots, the strange ones with punches,

And instructions that said, "Please punch punches in bunches."

As he slunk out the door toward the nearest Grand Hyatt,

He could hear what you'd think was an Elián riot.

The Cohens—sisters Esther, Mitzi, and Shannon,

Just realized that their votes had all gone to Buchanan!

At a place in Dade County near a middle-school yard,

The Grinch donned a shirt that said, "Polling Place Guard."

And he eyeballed each Chad and said, "Where is your card?

"Voter card? Motor card? Credit card? Diner's?

"Face card? Race card? Baseball card? Shriners?"

And he turned them away. Then the Grinch, like a fox,

Stuffed all of his ballots and locked the lockbox!

Then old Grinch returned home to go "LIVE" on TV.

He had waited quite late: (It was now eight oh three.)

So the Grinch Network News first projected a score:

"Now with one percent in, we pick Chad-ville for GORE."

Every Gore-ite in Chad-ville said, "GIVE US SOME MORE!"

So he pulled more projections straight out of his stack.

Then, "Oh, dear!" said the Grinch, "I must take it all back!"

So the Grinch Network News, in grand fairness to all

Now reported that Chad-ville was "TOO CLOSE TO CALL."

"Don't be mad, all you Chads, for this isn't a scandal,

"It was just," the Grinch said, "we forgot the Panhandle.

"The science of sampling can leave one out-simpled."

So the Chads were left hanging and pregnant and dimpled.

And the stress of it all put George Bush among the pimpled!

Then the Grinch raised a finger for the night's final push.

"Election Day's done, and the winner is BUSH."

After all, George was leading at least by a dozen.

(And whenever it's close, always go with your cousin.)

"Play the music, the songs, pop the corks, sing the praises,

" 'Cause with Bush as the winner, you're all getting raises!"

And then the Grinch yawned, "This election stuff's hokey,

Good-bye 'till next year! And now back to you, Cokie."

And the Grinch, he went back to his old Grinchy pad.

But en route, he was nabbed by a little Chad lad

Who had stayed up all night (quite ignoring his dad).

He stared at the Grinch and said, "Sir, who's our leader?

"Is it Bush? Is it Gore? Or, my choice, Derek Jeter?"

And the Grinch simply smiled: This day couldn't be sweeter.

They were finding out now that no outcome was coming!

They were seeing it now, all their dumbness and dumbing.

"They're just waking up!" he said. "Here's what they'll do!

"Their mouths will hang open a minute or two

"And the Chads down in Chad-ville will all cry, 'WE'LL SUE!' "

As he stared down at Chad-ville, the Grinch popped his eyes,

But the scene that he saw brought a shocking surprise.

All the Chads down in Chad-ville, Chad lads and Chad dads,

They were counting the votes, they were counting the chads!

He hadn't stopped an outcome from coming.

IT CAME!

SOMEHOW OR ANOTHER, IT CAME JUST THE SAME!

As the Grinch with his head buried deep in the sand

Sat puzzling and puzzling, "They will count them by hand?"

Yes, it came with the lawsuits, it came with the lawyers,

It came with Tim Russert, it came with Bill Moyers.

When the ballots were plucked and the counting was done

The last margin of victory turned out to be ... ONE!

And if the Grinch had just voted,

... HIS GUY WOULD HAVE WON!

And what happened then ...

Well ...

In Chad-ville they say

That the Grinch's small district

Grew three sizes that day.

'Cause the minute his mood had come out of its slump,

The Grinch said, "Hmm! I could be running this dump!"

So he formed a committee to do all the work

And he ...

HE HIMSELF!

The Grinch ran for town clerk!

Good Night!!

OK, much clearer now."

Yes, it much clearer now. Thanks, Jerry for sending the email. I just wish that we had people who could think, reason, and determine, instead of being so blind to the real issues before us.

Silent,

Do you mean hypocracy like,

"On a fundraising swing through California this week, McCain will be tapping into sources in the business community. Billionaire investor George Argyros is holding a $25,000-a-head dinner for the Arizona senator at his Newport Beach home."

-- Posted by iosoipay on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 10:11 PM

Damn, iosoipay, even if I wanted to go to McCain's FAT CATS ONLY dinner in California, I don't think that I could even afford one olive, much less $25,000 a head for dinner with McCain. Wonder what these people do who can afford to throw away so much money on a FAT CAT dinner with McCain? Maybe they are the CEO's of Bear Stern, or, CEO and Board of AIG, the outgoing presidents of Fannie Mae, or, Freddie Mac, or, any of the other Republican get rich schemes that went sour, and now require the low wage earners in America to bail them out, so that they can have the money to do it all over again.

Thank you for the great facts and interesting information. I do hope that some here are not so blind that they will not at least listen to reason before they decide for whom to vote.

Or the hypocracy that McCain says he is for Change in DC and campaigning reform but the RNC has paid for 57% of his ads. While Obama has paid for 97% of his out of his own campaign funds?????

Silent_Bob said: "Last night Obama hosted a dinner with his hollyweird buddies that cost $28,500.00 per plate!! The topic was that John McCain was the one that was out of touch with the middle class person, Don't you find that just a little hypercritical??"

I think Jon Stewart is "hypercritical". But if you meant "hypocritical", then that would be Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

Check your facts before you post: Obama didn't host the dinner, Warren Buffet did. Was that an attempt at spinning the news?

Buffett Serves Obama $28,500 Plate Fundraising Dinner

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/23/buffett-serves-obama-2850_n_108754.html

I bet Warren's friends are all rich enough to afford that, so what's the problem? Were you afraid they were borrowing money that could be used by the Bush administration to bail out superbanks?

OK, let's put things in perspective. Warren's dinner was to raise just over $9 million for Obama's campaign. Where were you last year when Bush's dinner helped raise in excess of $15 million for the GOP candidates? I bet you posted a note on Speak Out calling Bush a hypocrite, right?

Bush's Fundraising Dinner Raises $15.4M (June 13, 2007)

"The NRCC co-sponsors the dinner with the National Republican Senatorial Committee. The dinner raised $7.9 for House candidates and $7.5 million for Senate candidates."

"Bush helped raise $10.5 million at the event last month, compared with $17 million last year, $15 million the year before and a record $38.5 million in 2004, when he was running for re-election."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/13/AR2007061301964.html

"We are very excited about the success of this event and the enthusiasm we are seeing from our supporters," said Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Suelynn, one more for your ever-growing list of Republican hypocrisy items: when Republicans break a fundraising dinner record, it's a "successful event". When Democrats do it, it's hypocrisy.

And life goes on...

Robert Goodbody, that was the list I was referring to. Suelynn posted a bunch of those a few days ago. It's worth going back to read them.

Don't forget to add the fundraising dinner one. It's classic.

Robert,

My point wasn't that the average guy could attend. That isn't the case to most of these high end fundraising dinners. My point is you can't call Obama out on it when McCain gets the same treatment from his supporters.

Browsing the comments tonight and remembered something. Several years ago a musician, I forget which one, was asked what he thought of rap music. His reply was I love it. Everytime they play it a lot of people turn the radio dial.

BTW, does anyone know why you can't buy canned broccoli or cauliflower????

-- Posted by cptfa on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 11:15 PM

82allamerican,

Maybe the crispness of those veggies would be lost during the canning process???

-- Posted by iosoipay on Wed, Sep 17, 2008, at 11:19 PM

iso,

Same with asparagus, nothing like garden asparagus, but that is canned.

Wow, you can find everything on the internet.

Like Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and a few others, these veggies do not require much cooking. If they are canned, they would be mush like in broccoli soup. Actually, frozen or fresh is better for you nutritionally. You just lightly cook them to preserve the vitamins in them. I steam mine in the microwave from frozen for about 5 minutes and they, to me, are perfect.

Thanks unilib I'll add that one to my list of things that's ok for the Repubicans to do, but it wrong somehow for the Dems. When Bush's fundrasiers have a gathering, he calls them his "base". When the Dems do it, it's somehow a joke, or evil, or a slimmy tactic. The republicans think they are invisible and that we can't see them. They'd like to believe we're too dense or emotional to hear or see what they are doing. Laughing, that's been tried here from time to time.

"Hackers broke into the Yahoo! e-mail account that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin used for official business as Alaska's governor, revealing as evidence a few inconsequential personal messages she has received since John McCain selected her as his running mate."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080917/ap_on_el_pr/palin_hacked

OMG, just how stupid can a person be to trust a free email account system to handle official government business? I hope Alaska doesn't have a Sunshine Law, or she could now be in violation of a state law for having deleted the account afterwards.

I bet she fired the IT guy because he didn't like mooseburgers. LOL.

Link to the screenshots of Smart Palin's official Yahoo email account:

http://www.networkworld.com/slideshows/2008/091708-palin-email-hack.html

Question: how will she explain this to McCain? He apparently doesn't understand how email works. Maybe they will have to consult Karl Rove, the genius behind the almost impossible feat of "deleting" 4 years worth of damning email messages from the White House's servers. Of course it was an accident...

A more serious question: is it just me, or there's a pattern of GOP high-profile politicians really worried about hiding their digital tracks these days? What other reason would Palin have to use Yahoo instead of her Alaskan government-provided email address, if not to hide stuff from investigators?
