St. Louis-area ski resort may close

Tuesday, September 9, 2008
WILDWOOD, Mo. (AP) -- The only ski resort in the St. Louis area may be closing.

Hidden Valley resort in west St. Louis County may close after this winter due to an ongoing feud with the city of Wildwood. The city wants the resort to stop operations at 11 p.m. because of complaints about noise, lights and traffic.

The new restrictions came after the resort asked for a permit to add a tubing area for people who don't ski, and 250 parking spaces.

Wildwood's planning director says the changes will create more activity that will need more control. But he says the city wants Hidden Valley to stay and is willing to talk.

The resort owners say the time restriction would put the entire resort out of business because midnight skiing is most popular and they make snow at night when it's coldest.
