What gall

I find it laughable that the Obama campaign has the gall to question the background and experience of a sitting governor to be vice president. Has Barack Obama run anything larger than a street protest in South Chicago, much less a state?

Stop the attacks

It appalls me that so many people are personally attacking Mrs. Palin. I think it is honorable that she is willing to serve this country. It shouldn't matter how many people she has governed. What truly matters are her principles and how she carries them out. I have been nothing but impressed with her character and integrity so far. Perhaps her critics are lambasting her because they feel threatened by what she would bring to the election and her impending term as vice president.

Palin for president

Sarah Palin for president! Er, whoops, I mean vice president!

Where will Limbaugh fall?

David Limbaugh, are you going to stand for John McCain's declaration of divorce from the Bush administration? Are you, a man of presumably unquestionable principle, going to abandon the man you have consistently defended, even in his darkest hours? History may judge George Bush to be a much better chief executive than his current popularity indicates. Where do you stand?

Broken vows

As a lifelong Republican and a Christian I cannot vote for John McCain for the same reason I could not vote for Ronald Reagan. Both of these men divorced their wives after extramarital affairs. A man who cannot keep his vow to honor his wife will not keep his vow to honor the American people.

The opponent is ...

Memo to John McCain: You are running against Barack Obama, not President Bush.

McCain's illusion

If you want more government by illusion, McCain is for you. How can a candidate who has voted 90 percent of the time with the Bush-Cheney party line bring change? He has been in the Senate 25 years building up a long track record of special-interest debts. McCain is the past. And in his campaign he's trying to persuade you that he is both a classic right-wing Republican and a bringer of change. Sorry, John, you cannot be both the past and the future.

Pregnancy children

In response to the VP pick Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter being pregnant, does it matter? I am a very family-oriented person and became pregnant as a teenager myself. Teenagers are going to make mistakes, but as parents we cannot hover over them constantly and keep them from growing up. I would be more inclined to question Mrs. Palin's parenting skills considering she has four smaller children at home, one that is special needs, and yet continues in a career that is emotionally taxing and keeps her away from home a lot.

Value for taxes

I keep hearing how the Democrats want to increase our taxes. I did some checking and found that under Bill Clinton my taxes were only $25 a month more than today. However, we had a lot more social and educational programs then. Let's face facts. In order to balance the budget, there is no way around raising taxes unless we keep borrowing from China like Bush is doing. But sooner or later someone has to pay that back. I have no problem having $5 a week taken from my check if it will help education, social programs for the poor and pay off the budget. Remember, you can't get something for nothing.

If it were revised

Certainly the unfortunate story of Bristol Palin's pregnancy has no place in the political debate -- but what would the right wing 'social conservatives' be saying if it were Barack Obama's daughter who were unmarried and pregnant? Would they be so supportive? Food for thought, kids. Obama in statewide election

I WAS reading your article by your Republican press and I read in there that Palin has been through a statewide election but Obama has not. I guess you don't know that a senator from a state is elected by the whole state and not just one county. So therefore he has been through a statewide election too. You should really check your facts between you print stuff in your paper.

No experience

I SEE where there's a lot made about a vice president been chosen that had no foreign policy experience. That is against a presidential nominee who has no foreign policy experience. I don't really understand which is worse, a vice president with no foreign policy experience or a president with no foreign policy experience. That's kind of puzzling.

Public meetings

THIS IN regards to Gerald Jones' comments in the Saturday, Aug. 30 paper. His words were "if we can go into closed sessions, that's the way we'll handle it. If we can't go into closed sessions, I'm just not going to tell Jay Purcell about it." Well, how is he going to tell Larry Bock about it? They're not supposed to have meetings with just the two of them. This is against the Sunshine Law. How are we supposed to trust this commissioner without tax money? He obviously doesn't care about doing things the right way.

Answering to the people

I CAN'T believe Gerald Jones says he'll leave Jay Purcell out of open meetings if he records them. Mr. Jones, you didn't elect him. The people of Cape County did. You and Morley Swingle do not run Cape County. If either of you had someone running against you, I'm sure you both would be out of work.

Electric bill issues

I GOT a nice letter from the electric company today saying that even though my balance is $0, because of late payments, they're going to start putting a monthly deposit on my bill. Now, doesn't that make sense? If people are having trouble paying their bill but they do, let's make their bill higher. Let's give them more trouble. This is ridiculous and the electric company needs to step up and take a look at what they're doing.

The club

THE COUNTY Road 532 fiasco is just another example of the good old boys club alive and well within our county commission. It's absurd to waste tax dollars on a road that has a traffic count of six vehicles per day. I live on County Road 254 which supports traffic for 20-plus families, three cemeteries, school buses and through traffic from Highway 25 to State Route N. Our traffic count averages in the hundreds per day. Mr. Bock stated if the need to fix the road is there, it's there. I totally agree. If the road is as busy as County Road 254, but how does six cars per day justify a need, Mr. Bock? Our road and bridge advisory board is being disrespected by arrogant county commissioners. One of these commissioners is on a tape talking about his authority to abolish the advisory board. This is the same man that has a friend owning property on County Road 532. No favoritism, the man says. Hogwash.

Other cities in the south

HERE WE go again. We've got a major storm coming into the Gulf Coast. According to the news media, New Orleans is the only city down there. I was fooled. I thought there were a lot of cities down that way.

Go for it, Redhawks

WE ALL know that SEMO is getting paid to play football at Mizzou for money. But if you studied the game film against Illinois, you can throw the long pass and you can beat the Mizzou secondary. Go for it.

McCAIN CAMPAIGN ABOUT TO DROP BOMBSHELL!!!!

WILL SOON MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT AS TO BRISTOL PALIN'S RARE MEDICAL CONDITION.

This reporter has it on good authority, that the McCain campaign will soon make an unprecidented statement about their VP daughter's rare medical condition in an attempt to thawart further disscussion about Bristol Palin's unplanned pregnancy.

Bristol Palin, the pregnant, 17 year old daughter of Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain's choice as his VP, suffers from a very rare, but sometimes treatable medical condition.

If the Palin family agrees, Bristol Palin could try a radical surgery procedure to eliviate her condition.

In the past, the only known successful procedure for treating Bristol Palin's condition is surgery. There is no pharmacological treatment available at this time.

Those who have Palin's condition will eventually die, even if they have surgery. Levi Johnston, the father of the unwed Bristol Palin's soon to be born child could not be reached for comment.

It is not known when the McCain campaign will be releasing further information on Bristol Palin. Insiders tell me that her illness has been diagnoised as dollypartonitis.

The Jay Purcell conversations with Gerald Jones are now ONLINE!!!!!! You will not believe your ears!

Wow. I was right in my first impression of the conversation between Gerald Jones, and 2nd District Commissioner, Jay Purcell.

I had thought that Jones was telling Purcell to "shut up, you're making a lot of money, don't rock the boat."

At that time, I had only heard a snippet, a short clip of their conversation. I cannot believe what I just heard at http://www.jaypurcell.com/ShutUp.asp Play that SHUT UP file. It is incredible.

I just heard something that alarms me even more than Gerald Jones "don't rock the boat" comment. Unbelievable! I am more concerned with Jones saying "I am supposed to report back if you are even agreeable to...." Commissioner Purcell asks Jones..."Who are you supposed to report back to?" Jones, seems to me, suddenly realize that he has said too much, let the cat out of the bag, and he starts hemming and hawing. Just who does Gerald Jones report to? He is the presiding commissioner, isn't he the head cheese? Apparently not. Listen closely to him say..."I'm supposed to report back to.....(?)" Wow, this is amazing stuff. When you hear this conversation, you will know why it was necessary for Commissioner Purcell to record that conversation. It gives us a glimpse of what is really going on in Cape County. It sounds to me that someone else is in the hen house with the chickens. Gerald Jones may be the rooster, but there seems to be someone in the shadows who gives Gerald Jones his marching orders for him and the rest of the chickens are expected to do as the shadowy figure commands. So much for, "We the People," and government BY the people.

Thanks to 2nd District Commissioner Jay Purcell for shining light on the dark, seedy workings of Cape Girardeau County Government.

Four years ago, I worried whether Jay Purcell would be one of those go along, to get along politicians and cave in and be seduced by the good ole boy control over Cape County Government. I would like to apologize to Commissioner Purcell. You will have my respect and my vote in November.

what does dollypartonitis have to do with

anything ?

made up words have no effect on the election....

-- Posted by *Rick* on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 5:36 AM

In the Cape Girardeau area it matters that an unmarried seventeen year old is the daughter of a Democrat or Republican. If she is the daughter of a Democrat, her pregnancy shows a gross lack of family values. If she is the daughter of a Republican, the attitude becomes "oh well, teenagers make mistakes" and this is all immaterial.

Have a great kind-hearted Monday! I'm starting the week by creating list, inspired by a few things I clipped while catching up on magazines.

Day1-You have a right to be happy. [And let it show.]

Day2-Each and every day, miracles unfold and dreams come true. [All one needs to do is pay attention.]

Day3- Every great life starts with a dream. [Perhaps we should focus on our dreams.]

Day4-Possibilities always outnumber limitations. [There are no obsticles, only challenges/puzzles.]

Day5-There are so many reasons to like you! [Let them shine!]

Day6-Hope plus hard work equals success! [Perserverance always pays dividends!]

Day7-Look around you, you will be truly impressed! [Stop, listen, look...it is the simple, often free stuff that is truly amazing...when you think about it.]

"dollypartonitis"

"dollypartonitis," a made up word? Not hardly.

There are millions of women all over the world who have this affliction. These women, even if they underego the surgical procedure, will eventually die. Do you find that funny?

How dare you make light of their suffering, while I am trying to bring awareness of this dramatic condition.

I believe that the public has the right to know that Bristol Palin has been diagnoised with dollypartonitis, and if her case is like the rest, even if she has the surgical procedure, she will eventually die. I do not find that funny.

Sorry, didn't read it first.

Didn't Obama say he would NOT make his daughters live with a mistake?

-- Posted by KingsKid on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 8:18 AM

"Why are you so obsessed with the breasts of a minor?"

Bristol Palin may be 17, but in Cape she could have danced erotically at that girly bar that was over around KBSI, and her parents couldn't have said a thing about it. It is legal in Cape for a girl of 17 to do so.

I am just trying to bring awareness to a chronic illness, even if women have the surgical procedure currrently used to relieve some of their suffering, they will eventually die.

This girl, this Bristol Palin has already suffered enough. Imagine the tauting that she received in school. How can you make light of her plight?

Besides, John, she gave up her purity, and untouchable status when she got knocked up.

I do believe, John in Jackson, that you are the first person to mention "breasts." For God's sake and theirs, please, please stay away from your daughters.

Actually McCain's 90% party line score is pretty impressive - especially compared to Obama's near 100% party line vote. Change? Yeah, right.

-- Posted by blogbudsman on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 8:44 AM

CHANGE? YOU WANT CHANGE?

Let's see. Was it Senator Obama, or, was it Senator McCain who was involved in corruption, fraud, cohersion, in regards to the Savings and Loan Scandal which cost the US taxpayers about 200 million dollars in the 1980's, the era of greed?

My stars, sur, I do believe it was Senator McCain.

Oh, we will get change, alright, if McCain is elected, but not the good kind of change. The evil, crooked, corrput, abusive kind of change that forments trouble and bodes ill for our people.

Just My...

I don't know what you are basing your vote in Nov. upon, but the platform of the Democratic party calls for:

1. Ending Iraq War

2. Providing affordable healthcare to all Americans

3. Ethics Reform in Washington

Federal Ethics Reform: Obama and Senator Feingold (D-WI) took on both parties and proposed ethics legislation that was described as the "gold standard" for reform. It was because of their leadership that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips became part of the final ethics bill that was signed into law. The Washington Post wrote in an editorial, "The final package is the strongest ethics legislation to emerge from Congress yet."

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 9:52 AM

THE TRUE MEAUSRE OF OF A CONGRESSMAN, or, SENATOR

So, you are saying that we need more legislation from Congress. You are saying that we don't have enough laws, reptitive legislation and intrusion into our lives already? You are saying that to measure a good representative in Washington, we need to encourage him to sponsor, co-sponsor and author more legislation?

That great American statesman, Senator Huckleberry Hound, once said, "The government that governs least, governs best," or, vice versus.

I tend to agree with the Senator. I do not measure my represenatives in congress by the amount of paperwork they handle, bills that they dream up, or, the like. I judge them by the quality of their vote, not how often they vote, or, how many bill congress churns out. I figure, that after 200 some odd years, that we should just about have enough legislation on the books to last this country well into the next millenium.

I don't care if they spend the rest of the week playing checkers, as long as they vote and I agree with that vote more often than not.

-- Posted by Robert Goodbody on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 10:10 AM

Just saw Obama's new campaign slogan.

"Robert Goodbody likes me and I'm good at checkers"

Looks like a winner to me!

AT LEAST SENATOR OBAMA LIVES IN THE AREA THAT HE REPRESENTS. WHERE THE HELL DOES JOANN EMERSON, OR, IS IT JOANN GLADNEY, NOW, WHERE DOES SHE LIVE?

Obama isn't perfect, neither are you, neither am I. One thing that you can say for Senator Obama that you can't say for Joann Gladney, is that Joann Gladney doesn't live here, has never lived here, and probably will never live here.

Joann Gladney, also, known professionally by her stage name, Joann Emerson, lives in a mansion in Washington, D.C.

When her DEMOCRAT, LABOR, TRIAL LAWYER husband isn't with her in D.C. they party down in St. Louis town, where they own a huge, beautiful home.

When they tire of the city live, they scoot on over to the Lake of the Ozarks where they own another fine home.

In the 8th District? Joann has little more than a required office on Broadway.

Yep, Senator Obama isn't perfect, but he beats Joann Gladney (Emerson) by a long shot.

CASTING OF VOTES DOES NOT MAKE THE MAN

Why would I want your information on abstains, presents, or, whatever? Didn't you read my last post where I said that it is not the number of votes, the number of bills that someone dreams up that impresses me.

We have enough legislation on the books now, that congress could go back to offically being a part-time congress. Go up for a few months in the spring, go back up for a couple months in the fall, and the rest of the time, hold down a real job so that they know what the rest of us are going through.

God, I can't believe that some of you po' fokes think that these bast*rds should be up there full time, competing with each other on who can write the most laws. We have enough laws. Way too many. Bring Congress home, make them part time employees.... so, just like Wal-Mart, we don't have to pay them benefits, and let them work out here in the private sector.

You want more laws, more bills, more votes, God, no wonder this country is so scr*wed up.

-- Posted by Robert Goodbody on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 10:27 AM

McCain's illusion

Here's a crash coarse in the US Government...the Senate or House develop bills/plans/ideas that need to passed through eachother and end up on the Prez's desk so he can say "Yeah" or VETO!

So McCain agreed with Bush 90% of the time when it was the Legislative Branch who initiate the thingy to agree on?

Stupid. Is this Kieth Obermann posting?

Obama has never won a true statewide election. He used the courts to get his opponent to drop out of the race after divorce records were unsealed and it became clear that Jack Ryan liked having sex with his own wife (Jeri Ryan) a little too much. A carpet bagger (Alan Keyes) was brought in by the IL GOP with little time left to campaign. In reality, Obama was unopposed in his bid for the Senate.

What has he done for Illinois? In 2004, he voted against a homeowner's right to use a firearm to defend his family IN THE HOME against a criminal home invasion. He's never seen a gun ban he didn't like, and has taken every opportunity to prevent the law-abiding citizen to arm him or herself for any reason...protection, sport, collectors, etc. He also voted against allowing the death penalty for gang members who murder for the benefit of the gang. While Chicago Public Schools are in shambles, he stands firm against the vouchers that would allow low-income parents to be able to afford to send their kids to better schools. Gas and diesel prices are high in Illinois, and even higher in Chicago...but everything Obama wants to do will only push those prices higher...things like higher taxes for oil companies (corporations don't pay taxes...they pass the cost along to their customers), refusing to allow drilling to increase supply....thinks global warming is man-made and will work that into any tax/energy policies even if it hurts the economy. Yup, he's done wonders here in Illinois.

Obama is no different than Daley or Blagojevich...they are all corrupt Chicago politicians who only look out for their own best interests. They don't even TRY to actually represent the people....just words and speeches to try to convince you they do.

Just..

The federal ethics reform package is an outstanding piece of legislation.... Sen. Feingold had this to say...

"Senator Obama has every right to tout his role in that legislation," said Sen. Russell Feingold (D-Wis.)

I also think your reference to the Democratic Party as Dims is tasteless and childish. After all, we don't refer to the Republicans as ***** or Pubs...

I realize that won't stop you, especially since it seems to bother me, but it does lower the value of your posts, making them appear classless.

Governer Palin has the right idea about alot of whats wrong with the USA. WE should implement some of these in Cape. 1. Ban (and burn) books in our public libraries including schools that use foul language and promote alternate lifestyles as acceptable.

2. Make it mandatory to Teach creationism and intelligent design or better still stop teaching Evolution as fact in our public schools.

3. Stop sex education in the schools

4. Promote excellence in the schools and stop wasting money trying to teach the "diversity". Thats like building a bridge to nowhere

-- Posted by Goodpluck on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 12:50 PM

Don't agree with a lot of what Hilleco says, well sometimes, but I do tend to agree with him that the labels of Democrat and Republican really don't mean much. There are plenty of good and bad in both as well as Liberal Republicans and Conservative Democrats; not much of a descriptive in many cases. Party platforms may sound good, but once in office they seem to be forgotten. Don't much care for name calling either, but that's just me and I have heard Republicans called pretty bad names on here too, so it goes both ways.

-- Posted by BoratObama on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 12:56 PM

Interesting "change":

How were the stock markets doing 11/2006? Where are they now?

How was your 401K performing 11/2006? Where is it at today?

What was the unemployment rate 11/2006? What is it now?

What percentage of homes were in foreclosure 11/2006? What is it now?

What were oil and gas prices like 11/2006? What are they now?

Who took control of both the House and Senate shortly after the election in 11/2006?

Had enough? If not, vote Democrat....they are doing a fine job running things into the ground with only the legislative branch in their control. If you have had enough, vote CONSERVATIVE (not necessarily Republican)...lets get back to electing leaders who are fiscally responsible, instead of those who wish to take a larger chunk of your paycheck to pay for some hair-brained, unnecessary government program.

Goodpluck: There is nothing wrong with the US that cannot be solved by eliminating or nearly eliminating government, including its schools.

I disagree with your rule #1, who will be the one to censor books? Will this be a member of the American Taliban, or the parents?

I will agree with your final three rules.

If we take government out of the schools these rules would be there for no reason.

btw...Rarely discuss the Iraq war, for obvious reasons. However, will make a brief exception to discuss it with YOU.

You mentioned the surge working...I agree. I do not think the prior strategy was working well (yes...I am being an arm-chair general). What are YOUR thoughts? (Don't really care to hear from those who have NOT served in Iraq OR from the posters who choose to only post hateful/demeaning comments.)

Theorist:

You seem to be misinformed, and are confusing Bush with a Conservative. He has failed to "live within the means" of this nation, increasing the deficit annually and refusing to force congress to cut back on the out-of-control spending. Congress has not been very Conservative, either. Being a Republican is not the same as being a Conservative. Bush is no Conservative. Bush was the lesser of the evils...a better choice than Gore, and not nearly as bad as Kerry.

Those on the left seem to think the right needs to move left....and when we do end up with a "moderate" as a nominee, you claim that this moderate is a right wing extremist and representative of Conservative ideals and beliefs. Meanwhile, the left nominates a left-wing extremist, claiming him to be "moderate"....and kick any TRUE moderates out of your party (i.e. Joe Lieberman).

The last time the GOP ran a true Conservative, the election wasn't even close.

Me'Lange,

I foresee McCain speaking in front of the Lincoln Memorial (Good spot and not an aircraft carrier like Bush, that was a little over the top, even for me). I can see John stating that it has been a tough road for everyone involved. Friends, families, and loved ones whom our brave soldiers left behind to answer the call. Who gave someone else a chance to stay at home. Who gave that little extra. Who gave it all.

Maybe he would pull out some quotes from literature from days of old. Maybe Henry V, Act IV

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;

For he to-day that sheds his blood with me

Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,

This day shall gentle his condition:

And gentlemen in England now a-bed

Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,

And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks

That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."

Maybe there can be a St Iraqi Day? I just don't see John McCain saying I, or Me, or My during this welcome home address. John doesn't strike me as an "I" kind of guy.

I still haven't heard the good news, or the admition to the good news come from those who were/are against it. Because they still pray for more of our boys to get whacked over there. Be against it, but not what we do. I support the troops, but not the war. What kind of cr*p statment is that? At least that one has gone the way of the Dodo, but it took about two years.

Me'Lange, I still miss Brad if that's what you're wondering.

Well, now the Mayor has embarrassed our city by acting like a child. He's mad and he's not talking to Jay Purcell anymore! Wha! Wha! Wha! Grow up Mr. Mayor. You are supposed to be the leader of our city! What do you have to hide anyway? Why are you so worried about talking to Jay? Could it be your back room dealings with the Commissioner? Now you're in the same boat as he is! Shame on you and Jones!

-- Posted by balllover on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 3:28 PM

The New York Post has endorsed McCain-Palin.

-- Posted by BABE on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 3:34 PM

You are correct....Conservatism isn't just limited to fiscal matters, but that is where Bush has done the worst.

National Defense, I'd give Bush a "C". While we haven't been hit again since 9/11/01, we are still heavily reliant upon our enemies for our energy needs....which is not a good position to be in. How long would our "strategic reserves" last us if OPEC cut us off? Also, if the surge had been employed sooner, we could be on our way out of Iraq by now with the mission accomplished...leaving behind a free and democratic Iraq, instead of just on our way out of Anbar Province as we currently are.

Justices, I'll go with an "A-". Roberts was a home run...excellent choice. However, to get to Alito, we had to get through Miers.

State's Rights, I'll go with a "C+". No child left behind takes control over what is being taught, and taking the responsibility of ensuring educational standards away from the local school boards and state departments of education and passed that control over to a federal bureaucracy...which answers to no one.

2nd Amendment protection, I'll go with a "B-"...only because of his recess appointment of Bolton to the UN...however, he should have fought harder to KEEP Bolton. Remember when Clinton's assault weapon ban was set to expire? Bush said if Congress passed a bill to renew it, he would sign it. While this administration has been one of the friendlier ones to the 2nd Amendment, there was DEFINITELY room for improvement.

Low taxes is good, but a reduction in spending would have been great to go along with the tax cuts. Fiscally, I give Bush a "D-".

-- Posted by dixietrucker on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 3:35 PM

I visited Gunowners of America website to get their ratings on the presidential candidates. I turned to the GOA about a dozen years ago after I thought that the NRA sold out on the assualt weapons ban. Now, I belong to neither.

McCain's ratings 2000 C-, 2002 C-, 2004 F-, 2006 F-.

Obama's rating is "Atrocious" Out of ten votes he only voted pro-gun once. He voted to outlaw gun confiscation durring national emergencies.

Why do you see this as a political issue???

You posted "pro-life (to include Justices)". This again reminds me of MR. Wallingford, who put on his campaign posters, 100% pro-life. Not possible!!! Does he mean "anti-abortion", does he mean "unless you enter a home uninvited", does he mean "until you enlist in the military".(a little facetious on my part)

You see, some are pro-life here, but expendable life there. IT is a moral issue, one that must be dealt with by an individual on an individual basis, and one which an individual must live with.

to Jay is because he fears being recorded!I think everyone would agree that Purcell's use of a recording device was less then honorable.I have stated that I would like them both to resign but that did not fare well with many.Purcell will more than likely get beat in November by Finch who is running as an independent.

The honorable Mayor is in his last term. This County and City need a new direction and new officers. We do not need either of these two in public office and we certainly do not need this negative publicity. This is exactly the sort of in fighting that brought Cairo,Illinois to its knees years ago as well as currently. We need shakers and makers not trouble shakers and makers! All 4 of these individuals need to GO...

-- Posted by Theorist on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 4:06 PM

Theorist,

Well, I disagree with your disagreement, but on a serious note it is easy to come up with all types of these semantical debates such as "Pro Choice". We know what it means, but it can be twisted around. One can say they are "Pro Choice" because they choose not to choose to allow abortions. These shorthand "common usage" terms are useful in discourse while your approach is interesting from a purely philosophical standpoint. If we pick apart every word and nuance, we will never be able to get to the core issues. Of course this is just my humble opinion.

-- Posted by BN1401 on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 4:15 PM

I believe that many votes will be decided on the pro-life, pro-choice issue as the candidates are so far apart on that one. Palin has stated that even if her daughter was raped (daughter was 12 at the time) she would not allow her an abortion. She is also against abortion in cases of incest.

49% each. Sounds like no one is in the lead

-- Posted by all_i_hear_is_blah_blah on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 4:33 PM

all i hear,

The "absolutist" position of no abortions under any circumstances appears to be much more consistent and defensible one than one in which you allow killing an unborn child in certain "approved" cases. If one truly believes abortion is killing a child, how can one ever justify it? This is not my position, but I can certainly understand those who hold different positions. I am also not concerned too much about one politician's position on abortion due to the fact that I don't believe Rowe v Wade will ever be overturned and even if it was, the states could still allow abortions which I believe most would. Of course I do not discount someone voting one way or the other as a matter of principal.

I will refrain from further discussion on abortion as it is a subject in which no one is going to change their minds one way or the other.

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 4:34 PM

Having pro-life or anti-abortion justices means nothing. Congress could have overturned Roe vs. Wade by a simple majortity vote. The Republicans held the majority in Congress for 12 years, but no vote to override Roe vs. Wade. When seven of the nine Supreme Court Justices were appointed by Republican Presidents they refused to hear a case challeging Roe vs. Wade. No all it takes is a simple maority vote in Congress.

-- Posted by Hilleco on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, 3:34 pm CDT

Hilleco, I agree 100%. Why was nothing done by the Republican congress for 12 yrs? My thoughts go directly toward the Republicans' desire to continue to get the Pro-Life vote. Strategy.

That is why to me, when a few Roman Catholic bishops threatened to refuse Holy Communion to certain members of congress based on their Pro-Choice stance, I thought the Pro-Life congress members shouldn't receive the sacrament either. They had control of Congress and enough judges to overturn Roe v Wade and never introduced the legislation.

Who is the worse sinner here? Those who could overturn Roe v Wade and do not or will not; or those who are Pro-Choice and don't pretend to even want to overturn it?

I am still of the belief that it is an individual's moral choice to decide if abortion is right or wrong for them, but am just darn tired of hearing politicians saying they are Pro-Life and doing nothing about it when they get to congress so they can continue to get the vote.

Will add to MY list:

I believe one should do more than complain about issues, that one has the responsibility to get involved in their community to make it a better place to live. (ie...Taking an interest in the public education system, county, city, state and federal government and current issues. Perhaps volunteering, if one's schedule allows. And above ALL, just being KIND!)

I will get involved if I see an individual being physically abused...whether I know them or not. AND it will get very UGLY if the individual is a child!

I am a woman, with a mind of my own...and have no problem sharing MY thoughts. (If you hadn't noticed.)

I do my best to be respectful to others and value their unique thoughts, even when they differ from mine. But have been known to get quite nasty if I ticked off (and if you are in the same room...better learn to duck if you provolk me...cause I like to toss pillows or soft shoes.)

-- Posted by Pups on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 7:34 PM

Pups,

I have a problem with the list too.

1. "Foul" language and "promoting" are subjective terms. Personally, try to limit my "colorful" language...but sometimes...it is the most appropriate choice of word selection. As far as alternative lifestyles, what the heck...does the poster not realize kids learn about most things other places besides books? (btw...I see nothing wrong with alternative lifestyles, personal choice issue. Not mine, but I respect others lifestyle choices. And whether it is a choice or not...is a different debate.)

2. Eh...ever heard of separation of church and govt? I see nothing wrong with teaching all three and ALLOWING our children to make up their own minds.

3. "Stop sex education in the schools"

WOW! Now that is just plain STUPID! IMHO Sounds like a comment from the early 60's, if we don't talk about a topic...it will go away.

4. "Promote excellence in the schools and stop wasting money trying to teach the "diversity". Thats like building a bridge to nowhere" WOW! WOW!!! Yes, promote excellence for EVERY CHILD deserves a quality education!!! Your diversity comment doesn't deserve a reply, poster is a racist/bigot.

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 7:39 PM

Eh...Need to clarify this one..."I am for less Government intrusion."

As I've stated before...in certain circumstances, for example oligopolies and a few other industries...I believe government regulation is absolutely necessary. (ie oil/gas, lending, utility and utility-like industries) I also value the purpose/benefit in safety regulations.

I am not a big fan of Greta, but my wife and I watched most of it and liked it, but did not think they went into enough depth on the "Trooper Gate" issue as I had read elsewhere that the Director of Public Safety who was "fired" had refused a transfer and had also said he was never pressured to fire the Trooper in question. Maybe it was earlier in the show. I will try to catch it again if it is repeated.

I personally don't have a problem if abstinance is part or first rule in Sex Ed. It is the only 100 percent effective way.

-- Posted by Pups on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 8:09 PM

Is it better to try and fail than not to try at all? Because it fails in some does that not make it a worthwhile goal?

-- Posted by Red_Rhino on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 8:11 PM

btw...I have 14 and 16 year old nieces...family, church and I believe school has taught them "abstinence"...well. Don't really know for a fact, but I do NOT believe this education is working. Teenagers/pre-teenagers will behave like teenagers.

IMO...Educate, communicate...HECK yes. But I think the problem lies a little deeper in our family values. Kids now-a-days have much more "freedom" than say 25 years ago. "Freedom" withOUT good direction/supervision begets boredom, curiousity, experimentation, opportunity for sexual desires to be seeded and acted upon...among other things we'd prefer our teens not do...like drugs and drinking.

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 8:11 PM

Silent_Bob,

Sorry about the last post...not trying to "tick" you off or anything. Was just playing.

Hello, everyone,

Just got back to Tx.

Bethie, MeLange, Pups,

I really enjoyed our lunch and hope to do it again when we come back up, for the baby. Bethie, your baby is a little doll so glad I got to see him.

Semoangel and Gurusmom,

I missed you guys and hope to see you next time also.

If you happened to catch any of the MTV music awards last night, you got to hear the host ripping on the young stars/role models who choose to abstain....saying things like "a little sex every now and then never hurt anybody". Pathetic.

-- Posted by dixietrucker on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 8:42 PM

MeLange;

It takes more than that to get to me.

I was just wondering, Uhhh were you ever a teen in love??

I'm not being a wise guy now. I got married at 16 more than 30 years ago and still with her. But I think your smart enough to figure out why we got married. I really don't think that by her daughter fooling around that she is a failure!!

fajar154: I was against the Iraq war from the start. I would prefer that no one on either side was killed or injured. Now label me anyway you choose since you seem to be into labeling.

-- Posted by Hilleco on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, 2:49 pm CDT

I also wanted no one hurt, maimed, or killed, but sometimes those things happen. Just because those wear the uniform does not mean they have an thing for killing.

I'm also into full on contact sports, but that might be too fun for me.

-- Posted by fajar154 on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 8:58 PM

Well I'm not trying to tick anyone off but I think that it is in bad taste to criticize Gov. Palin for what her daughter has done. The young lady is after all 17 yrs old a should be held accountable for her actions not her mother!

AND its cold up there!!

-- Posted by Silent_Bob on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 9:00 PM

Silent_Bob,

Yes Bob, thought I was in love at 15. While at the time I did NOT appreciate my dad reading my diary and forcing me to stop seeing this young man. Nor did I appreciate (till later in life) how very strict my dad was. I'm sure the values my parents instilled (despite my reluctance at the time) did affect my choice of abstinence until I was of legal age.

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 9:01 PM

Silent_Bob,

I'm not holding Palin accountable for her child's choice. But I think it is a bit ironic that her supporters are using her stance on teaching "abstinence" as a debate. One would hope that she has stronger stances than that one (not suggesting it is not an important one...just not HER strong suit. IMO)

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 9:06 PM

Me'Lange

Pre-surge. Those on the ground were making due with what they had. (ie manpower, equipment, ROE, abilities and help from local populace)

It took a long time to figure it out that we needed to send more soldiers over to place where others stated we needed to leave. (ie politicans trying to run a war when they couldn't fight their ways out of a congressional wh*rehouse)

fajar154,

We completely agree. Wanted your take, as I respect those who have served. Thanks for sharing.

-- Posted by Me'Lange on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 9:10 PM

I do not want my granddaughters to go out and get ACTIVE any time soon because of this exact reason!

I'm just saying it happens and at 17 its not as big of a deal as say 14-15 yrs. old. Its still to young but I can't criticize. That would make me a hypocrite!!

-- Posted by Silent_Bob on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 9:10 PM

Silent_Bob,

Not sure how old you are...but seens MY 17-18 year old is like today's 14-15 year old. Graduated in 1981.

See now you have me confused! I don't know of a stronger stance than wanting abstinence taught in sex education short of a chastity belt or locking them in the basement. I think that her daughter is a perfect example of the public schools failure to teach a very touchy subject!! Teaching safe sex is just stupid and only tells the kids its alright to fool around if....

-- Posted by Silent_Bob on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 9:21 PM

I'm a bit older than you!!

I think that we just proved that this is a subject that should be a family matter and not played out in the public eye!! Its a non-issue When it comes to what Gov. Palin brings to the Presidential race!!

-- Posted by Silent_Bob on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 9:26 PM

Who Me!

Did you not understand that MJB was referring to her well endowed form!!

It was I think meant to be a joke but it was in poor taste!!

Sorry, but I think you have to be a parent to understand a child falling from your moral teachings. One can just support the child (unless it is a criminal act) and still adhere to their own moral values. I respect Sarah Palin because she has done that.

Who Me;

Easy big fella!! At least show more manners than MJB!!

It goes to show Dem's are usually uneducated, made bad decisions, are lazy, think they should get a free ride on the producers back, can't manage their money, and when they don't get their way.... well.... Let's all say it together..... "It's not fair!!!!!"

Wow, I'm not any of those things, My Parent's were none of those things. My siblings (5 out of 9 of us) that are Dem are none of those things, but one sibling that votes Republican is.

Sorry Who Me, happy that you are successful,(and glad the weather is working out better for you and your guys btw) but I am not jealous of your success. I pay my way just as you do.

Ok, again, said too much. Night all.

My daughter took my granddaughter to the staging area for the fair parade to ride on a Girl Scout float. While in the park, a classmate of my eight year old grandson ran up and asked him if wanted to ride on a float. His mother inquired as to what float and the classmate said 'Republican'. He was given a t-shirt and had great fun throwing the candy and waving the flag. He told me of it afterwards and said to me 'we don't like those demacraps, do we?' Priceless!

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is an example of a asinine comment. Anyone with this mentality, to think you have to be a parent in order to understand a childs need, is obsurd. You learn parenting skills FROM your parents as a child.

Babe, I know Melange. I respect Melange, even though we are on opposite sides of the ilse. You are NO Melange.

Here is a good reason to hide you balls!!

The drawer

A young couple gets married, and the groom asks his bride if he can have a dresser drawer of his own that she will never open. The bride agrees. After 30 years of marriage, she notices that his drawer has been left open. She peeks inside and sees 3 golf balls and $1,000.

She confronts her husband and asks for an explanation. He explains "Every time I was unfaithful to you, I put a golf ball in the drawer." She figures 3 times in 30 years isn't bad and asks "But what about the $1,000?" He replied "Whenever I got a dozen golf balls, I sold them"

Good Night Folks!!

notsure

Not hate but selectivity in choices. More good news. He wants to be a Republican with a card and a badge button. I told him to start a young Republican club with his friends and classmates. He was very excited and may do just that. He is a very bright eight year old.

Babe - Give me a break! Do you really expect us to believe that crap? You lie as much as Sarah Palin. Sold the plane on ebay - lie. Fired the chef - lie. Lied about the bridge to nowhere and then took the money too! All bulls--t!

-- Posted by suelynn on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 11:42 PM

Babe...is he a liar too? If he is, he'll fit in just fine.

-- Posted by suelynn on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 11:44 PM

Who me,

Heard Michael Moore on TV tonight. His point: Palin is an extremist that doesn't represent mainstream America. She doesn't share the same values as the people I know.

LOL the bat fastard thinks he's mainstream.

"made bad decisions, are lazy, think they should get a free ride on the producers back, can't manage their money"

When I saw this, do you know who came to mind? Hmmmm. They made bad decisions, they are lazy, they think that they should get a free ride on the producers back, and....they can't manage their money.

I thought, well that sounds like the Wall Street investment firms who were so greedy, made serious mistakes in their hedge funds, bought up debt and requested risky forms of debt so that they had the chance to make incredible sums, and then when the ride ended, they feel that the woman who works at K-Mart, the cashier at Rhodes 101, and the guy who cuts your grass should bail them out.

That is how fat cat Republicans think. They think that we little people are here to serve them and if necessary bail them out of a bind when they make foolish, greed oriented decisions that failed.

Parasites, blood sucking leeches on the back of the worker, yep, that is what fat cat Repbulicans truly are.

I would guess that WHO ME and some of the other yokels on here never saw one Michael Moore movie.

How many of you saw SICKO? hmmm?

How many of you saw Fahrenheit 9/11? hmmm?

How can you criticize the man when you have been too bullheaded to see his movies. You say that he is spreading lies, how can you say that? You didn't see the movie.

I know one ******* who did lie, that was George W. Bush. The ******* lied repeatedly. So, when you say fat lying *******, I am going to think of your president, not Michael Moore.

Palin's tramp daughter is an underage drinker

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm36Td43AyM

Now, when a Democrat family has a problem, you low life Republicans really get a kick out of it. You mock them, and criticize them.

When there is a problem in a Republican family you all make up excuses, criticize anyone who points that problem out, and try to make it seem that it could happen to anyone.

How about compassion for all, not just Republicans, after all, that is what the bible commands.

Why if that rationale is good for Republicans, it isn't good for Democrats?

Here we have Sarah Palin who has raised a little tramp, who has been an underage drinker for years, and who is now knocked up. One of you said that Sarah Palin isn't to blame for what her 17 year old daughter did. Who raised the little tramp? Who passed along her moral values to the little tramp Bristol Palin? If Sarah Palin isn't responsible for the trampish behaviour of her own daughter, then who is? Santa Claus?

If you feel compelled to have compassion for the Palin family, you should have the same compassion for the "liberal" family when they too are faced with the identical problem. Otherwise, it is hypocracy. Oh, I see the problem, the Republicans are the masters of hypocracy, they own hypocracy. Therein is the problem. Compassion for some of their own kind, none for others.

Sarah Palin, Bristol Palin, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
