Speak Out 9/5/08Friday, September 5, 2008No bike parking A month or so back you ran an article about bike lanes and other bike-related matters in Cape Girardeau. I am all for bike lanes, but getting to places on a bike isn't the problem. In my opinion, the problem currently is that when you get somewhere you have no place to put your bike. We have a number of "plazas," "villages," etc. and other places that have several stores in them, yet they have no bike racks of any sort. If you look at any city that does have a large number of bicyclist, they all have bike racks all over the place. Drinking not that bad I JUST wanted to say that the article that was in last Thursday about raising the drinking age to 25 because it kills brain cells is not true. I just wanted to let you know that alcohol actually kills off the weak brain cells like a wolf picking off the weak sheep in the back of the herd. It takes off the bad ones. So it actually could help you in the long run if you drink in moderation. Shame on CNN LAST WEEK, I witnessed one of the most chilling things that I've ever seen in my 63 years on this earth. I watched Bill Maher promoting his upcoming movie on Larry King. In the course of his comedy routine, he expressed the need for the 16 percent of atheists in the U.S. to band together to stop this Jesus and God fantasy. Well, he has a right to believe or not to believe. But shame on Larry King and CNN for promoting him on national television. That 16 percent is hogwash. This is a Christian nation except for a few like him. Will I go to see his movie? Hell, no. Refreshing Palin HOW REFRESHING it was to hear Gov. Palin speak about the sanctity of life. She has delivered five children into this world, the last of which has Down syndrome. I also respect Sen. Obama's hands-off approach to this matter. Even though he said that this topic is above his pay grade, he too must have a feeling for the sanctity of life. Eyesore at school CAN SOMEBODY please clean up our school and ground at North Elementary? It's a big eyesore. Public information I WOULD just like to ask Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones when he is going to get it through his head that county business is not something that he can discuss at will — it is public information. The days of his good-old-boy activities are over. He should not be discussing county business in private. Plenty of time THERE HAS already been questions about whether Gov. Palin will have to time to fulfill the duties of vice president while being mother to five children. Come on, now. If Dick Cheney can take Haliburton from bankruptcy to a multibillion-dollar company and still fulfill the duties of vice president, then what's the problem? A beer-drinking road I WAS just wanting to know about the County Road 532 issue. I've lived out in this area for more than 30 years. Mainly, the area they're talking about is lower than the water. Nobody lives down there. You can get out from one end to other. Basically, that's just a beer-drinking road for all these years. We've never had any type of emergency out there, if you can't get out from one end to the other. There's no houses on this road, there never has been. It's strictly a flat road and I can't understand why they are doing all this work to it. Politics and morality CAN ANYONE please explain to me how you can be a Christian and still vote Democrat and condone abortion and gay marriages? I just need that question answered. Leave children alone THE CHILDREN of political candidates should be off-limits for the news. I'm not even going to mention the names of the candidates or their children because it shouldn't be discussed. We should leave the children alone. Let's talk about the politics and the reasons people want to run for office. Let's talk about how they serve in office. Let's talk about the job that they want to do for the country. But let's not talk about their children. Children have to grow up by themselves. GOP made wrong choice WHEN ALL the smoke and dust is cleared and all this done, you realize we could have had Rudy Giuliani running for president and maybe even Joe Lieberman for vice president. It's just like one of those old V-8 commercials where you hit yourself on the head and say "Oh, we could have had this." Sacrifice vs. choice I WONDER how many families have had the heartbreak of a teenage daughter getting pregnant. I would say very few. Our heart breaks when we hear of our young men killed in service, the sacrifice they give. We kill more people every day in our country by abortion than in the wars. That is a sacrifice, but abortion is a choice. Shake things up I AM so glad we're going to finally get a candidate in Washington that's going to shake things up like McCain instead of another cookie-cutter Democrat like Obama. More praise for Newt I'D LIKE to thank the person who called in and gave Newt Gingrich credit as the one who balanced the budget during the Clinton administration. Bill Clinton had nothing to do with that and yet he stands up in front of everyone at the convention and takes credit. But Newt Gingrich was the one who did it. Tied down too late I Just want to thank the fellow traveling on Highway 34 west around Burfordville Saturday afternoon. He was towing a small trailer filled with lumber. Two pieces fell off, and due to oncoming traffic I could not miss them. As I traveled on, I came upon the fellow tieing down his load. Too late. When I arose Sunday morning, my passenger side tires were both flat. Thanks to his carelessness, I now probably need to replace my tires. Political food for thought If, as the Republican spin machine is trying to argue, to criticize Sarah Palin's lack of experience is "demeaning to women," then surely it is equally true that to criticize Obama's lack of experience is demeaning to blacks? I DO believe the bedroom issues are none of our business. However, the McCain/Palin ticket are putting "themselves" out there with this "pure family values" crap. When one does this they open the door to criticism. IMHO (By the way, when I typed that comment, I was watching the convention and McCain was boosting about Palin and his family values.) Sorry, sleeping around on her husband (per the Enquire story that broke recently and McCain's freely admitting he cheated on his wife...do NOT seem like traditional family values...to me.) AND it was a joke of timing...was intended for those watching the convention AT that moment.
Actually I'm not as liberated as many women are, freely admit that. I kind of enjoy a man opening the door for a lady. I respect a woman who chooses to stay at home, focusing her attention on raising children with healthy lifestyles, good moral values and a quality education. Think the man "should" wear the pants in the family and contribute to buying those pants by working. (Not saying the woman's voice should not be heard, but "I" prefer a man's man...not a whimy man. That is a personal choice...to each their own.)
I was raised in a family where my mom waits on my dad...she still serves him his meals on a tray and fetches his drinks (when he is just as close to the kitchen as she is). That is NOT my style, but it works for them. I'm more of the "Honey...I'm headed to the kitchen do you need anything?" type. If someone expected or demanded me to "serve" them, I'd probably tell them to "******* your lazy back-side and get it yourself (and while you are up...please go buy me some ice cream). hehehe
Politics and morality,
"condone abortion and gay marriages" "please explain" what do either of these have to do with religious or political beliefs? "I just need that question answered." They are all three PERSONAL choices, not things I think our government should be regulating.

No bike parking, Parking lots are privately owned by the individual business or their leaser. City really doesn't and shouldn't have a voice in managing personal property. However, public property like parks etc...then the City to spend our tax dollars on such things as bike racks.

A well-known cardiologist died, and was given an elaborate funeral. A huge heart covered in flowers stood behind the casket during the service. Following the eulogy, the heart opened, and the casket rolled inside. The heart closed, sealing the doctor in the beautiful heart forever. At that point one of the mourners burst into laughter. When confronted, he said, "I'm sorry, I was just thinking of my own funeral; “I'm a gynecologist." at that point, the proctologist fainted!!
Apparently I need to explain a comment from yesterday about a summer day of learning as it was taken out of context.
I try to teach my children something every day as it is. As a matter of fact I believe that my daughter's school is holding her back and took it upon myself and went out and bought more workbooks since they never send any homework home with her and now she does that every day at least two pages. I take the time and explain it to her to where she can understand it. I don't just take the one day out of the summer however I do believe that it promotes healthy learning for those families that are too wrapped up in vacation plans to teach. Sorry if it was taken out of context but I guess I should have explained a little bit better
Please don't misunderstand I make sure my kids learn something new EVERYDAY not just one day out of the summer.

And I agree to the old saying, If you don't vote you have no right to complain. Even if someone casts their vote for Bob Barr at least they are participating in the process and I have great respect for that.

I too am getting a little bit sick of it. I have answered questions asked only to be told the my answers aren't good enough. Been accused of being someone else (good job yesterday notsure btw), not to mention get attacked on a personal level more than necessary just because I don't agree with the norm around here. As far as the ABSTAIN on Obama's voting history I do believe that I pointed out to look at the dates as most of them are from when he has been campaigning. Please look at John McCain's and tell me is this not the same? I for one find that better than just shooting from the hip and voting on an issue that you may or may not have researched. If you don't know about the issue please don't vote on it and make the potentially wrong decision that's all I am saying.

She has spent her time working for Alaska because she has yet to hold a federal job. Obama on the other hand has wasted our money (his pay role) just by voting present 130 times.
IMO a vote is the easiest duty an American has to do.
Its either yes or no , him or her, right or left!!
Voting present tells me he has no opinion and that's not what the people of Illinois put him there for!

To the people who wanted to know more on Sarah Palin; she has a website. Well it is for the state of Alaska. On there is all kinds of things she has done while in office in Alaska.
I think the person got it right who said that nothing said here will change anyone elses mind on who to vote for. However, I love that some are saying she isn't qualified when she has held offices as a mayor and now governor when Obama has only been a senator.
I soley agree with the person who said Palin is what we need. As for her personal life; any parent of a teenager knows that you can raise them with all of the morals in the world, but they ultimately make their own choices and it just so happens that her oldes did so. It is how she handles it that makes the difference. If you believe what is written in the Enquirer I would encourage you to read something with some truth in it.
I am worried what this country will come to if Obama is elected to the presidency.

personally i am not concerned about what this country will come to if either McCain or Obama is elected. McCain said some things that made me take notice but the Republican party has been saying these things for years and i have yet to see any change. George 1st advocated for school choice and a reform to public education. both Bush's advocate pro-life (rather antiabortion). i see no change. these are the kind of issues (along with gay marriage and illegal aliens) that get votes but seem to never change. some of these are states issues.

I have watched both conventions and after last night, I know that I will be voting for McCain/Palin ticket. Why? Because they have the experienced and the greater potential of change than Obama/Biden.
If Obama actually did something in his terms in the IL Legislature then I would consider him. As for Biden, I see him as a lame duck VP... he won't be able to do anything. Obama is a one man team and will call the shots (if he knows how) if and when he gets the nomination. Biden is a long for the ride. Kudos to Obama for being the 1st "black" man to run for president. But his "triumph" is the only thing he is able to hold on to.
As for McCain, he knows what it is like to be an American. He proved it in his service to the country; both on the battlefields and in the government. He has more experience than Obama. Palin has more experience bringing reform. I feel like she will have a great effect on the GOP because she is a fresh young voice in a party that primarily resides of stuffy old men. Polls have already shown that she is being warmly accepted by the GOP.
I say vote for McCain/Palin. Not only do they represent where this country has been, but they provide a course and hope for the future.

So at least I caught your posts, although my plans got a bit o.b.e.'d by then when my Mule hit me up side the head with some conflicting changes for this coming extended weekend. Well, figuring that commuting back and forth between Wentzville/St. Charles to appease Mule's agenda preferences (highly advisable self-preservation option, if ya get my drift!!!), I decided to stow the truck/trailer idea in lieu of taking the van and staying in a motel. Of course, that mandated having to jump out of my socks trying to get some repairs done on the van, including new tires.
Well, my only dilemmas now are trying to get Mule's heart started; cruel boss worked her extra late last night, knowing we were wanting to head out for an extended weekend of wasting time and senseless capitalistic spending! The other mind-bender is finishing up packing for two different eras: Present, obviously, and reenacting "killing people & breaking things" for the "cause", 1860's style...er, that be the Civil War for those history-deficient renegades from Rio Linda!!!
Anyway, just wanted to say hey, and thanks, before we launch. And sorry for the extended bloviation here, since everyone knows that's not my normal gig (heh, heh, heh!); howsumever, also felt (or emoted) that it was my patriotic duty to make up for duty time lost in the bog this week (heh, 2x!). Actually, I agree with Hilleco and Checkmate. AND I have in the last TWO elections refused to vote because the choices s-u-c-k-e-d!!! AND may very well make that choice again this time. IF you, Silent shish-ka-bob or anyone else doesn't like that TOO farting bad. It is MY choice to exercise MY right to vote or not vote. AND what is it off your hairy back-side IF another makes an educated choice different than yours? I believe that is exactly what our constitution, bill of rights and those (like yourself), who have gone to war, fought and some died for-the last 230+ years represent.
Your non-voting citizen/country example doesn't fly with me...stating that someone is not making a valid choice by not voting is NO different (in my book) than the countries that FORCE their population (with the threat of guns, death etc) to the poles to vote for someone they don't believe/support/trust.

AUGUST...a GREAT MONTH for the REPUBLCIAN JOBS program.
Wow, August was a fantastic month for the economy. The Republcians eliminated 75,000 more jobs in just one month! It is not a record, but is a mighty fine effort of US Job Elimination.
The official unemployment figure is 6.4%! Another sign that this super human effort to move American jobs to foreign countries so that a very select few Republicans can become incredibly, fantastically rich beyond comprehension. This is the American dream. At least it is for most Republicans.
So, keep up the great work, Republicans. Don't let that 6.4% unemployment rate discourage you. It is a great number, for it is not the true number of American unemployed. It is the figure that only represents the percentage of people who have lost their jobs, but who are still getting unemployment insurance. Once those few months of safety net are eliminated, the unemployed are not counted any longer. So, that 6.4% is just window dressing, the number of Americans who have lost their jobs and cannot find a job is far greater than that 6.4%. So, take heart, the number of Amerians who have no job, or, who have one of the new low wage jobs that bush created is much, much grearter than that 6.4%.
Republicans, you have embraced globalism, and it has paid off. Well, not for everybody, but for most American corporations and their CEO's, and that special cadre of globalist Repbulicans who have become, pardon the expression, filthy rich.
With the election of McCain-Palin, you can be sure that our great globalist goals of elminating even more American jobs will be fullfilled. John has been in Washington for over 25 years, we can count on him. If he were going to reform anything, he sure would have done it by now. So, Vote McCain-Palin for more of the same great profits that you have come to expect.
As for those lower Upper Class, Small Business owners, and the Middle Class, who cares? We got ours; let them eat cake!

The reason I want to know about her is because up until she was announced for VP I like many others had NEVER HEARD OF HER. If she did so much for the great state of Alaska wouldn't that have been news worthy for us down here in the lower 48? Just a question and observation. In regards to the "Keating Five", after a Senate Ethics investigation, both John Glen and John McCain were found not to have acted improperly while Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, and Donald Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB in its investigation. McCain and Glen both exercised poor judgment, but were not found to have done anything improper. I am not a really big fan of John McCain, but sometimes people think if something is thrown out enough it becomes true. Overall pretty disappointed in the quality of SO the last few days, so I am just skimming and may have missed something, but maybe that's a good thing.

I try as best I can to use some common sense when discussing politicians spouses. While something they say or do might be worthy of comment, what they own or wear is really irrelevant to me. I am not even really too sure how much relevance what they say or do has unless there is good cause to believe the spouse will act as co-president or have undue influence on the president. As a Catholic who votes democratic often, well said Grit. I agree. Rather than legislate morality and making abortion illegal, I as a Christian see it as my obligation to make it so that no young girl would ever want to desire one. Rather than putting all of our efforts into trying to erradicate abortion, HELP the young girls who are incapable of caring for themselves or newborns. Help those who have quit school in order to have their child. Give them a place to live, take them in when they get thrown out of their parent's homes. Not everyone's parents are as wonderful as the Palins. There are ways to discourage others from aborting babies ... not just by laws, but rather by example.

I think Laura Bush has been a perfect example of a presidential spouse as she does not appear to try to influence policy and takes care of the duties that would seem appropriate to the spouse of the president. Of course one could always argue that we do not know what goes on behind closed doors and I know more than one man who blusters how much he wears the pants in the family only to jump two feet in the air when his wife calls him. Look at the issues, see where the candidates stand, evaluate what each issue means to you and rank the order of importance, then tally the 'score'. This is what I so-liked about Silent_Bob's post - don't have to listen to an hour of fluffy yada-yada to glean a few bits of info.
IMO, there will likely never be the 'perfect' candidate - just have to make a personal choice to pick the candidate that best aligns with one's personal ideals.

I have two grown sons, they have been around guns all of their lives and they got their first (shot guns )at age 10. Little Johnny's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures, tacked to a bulletin board, of the 10 most wanted criminals. John: I heard on a talk show that Hussein wanted to appeal to white male voters. In which he believes, are a problem. Is this why he has white male advisers? I'm not sure, just an observence.

It was the driver's fault for not having his load not tied properly and the lumber falling off the trailer. Its your fault for running over it, your suppiose to keep a safe distance behind other vehicles.
Even though we are not driving OTR anymore,Thank God, I still drive defensivly.
Rule of thumb: If you can read the make of vehicle on the back, your too close. It only takes that one uh-oh, to ruin your whole day. Aggie
