Schrader sisters were loving, caring

To the editor:

I would like to comment on Laura Johnston's fine article regarding women's roles in the progress of Cape Girardeau. In particular, I would like to comment on Alma Schrader and her tenure as principal of May Greene Elementary School where I was a pupil back in the 1940s. Miss Alma was a tough but fair woman who was a wonderful principal who did not put up with poor sportsmanship. She was very much a disciplinarian. Her sister, whose name I can't recall, was the school nurse who always made sure the kids from Smelterville had shoes to wear and personally took them to the store to purchase them. I can't say enough good things about the Schrader sisters. I'm sure there are many old-timers in Cape today who also remember the Schrader sisters. We need more caring and loving people like the Schraders in our school systems.
