Evacuation urged for Thursday's blast

What's happening? On Thursday at 6:30 a.m., the first span of the old Mississippi River bridge -- the section closest to the Missouri side -- will be demolished. The bridge will be dropped by blasting it into sections. The Missouri Department of Transportation, Cape Girardeau police and the demolition contractor are asking people who live and work within a 1,500-foot radius of the blast site to temporarily evacuate.

Why is this necessary? There will be considerable noise as well as the possibility of small flying debris.

Where do I go? The Cape Girardeau riverfront is a good place to watch the demolition.

When should I leave? Authorities want those in the evacuate zone to leave by 6 a.m. Thursday.

What about my property? The contractor is insured. Most likely the blast won't hurt property. Police will patrol the zone.

What if I choose not to leave? It is important to stay away from windows facing the bridge and stay behind a wall or structure that provides protection from possible flying debris.
